Okay. This book took me by surprise. It's so simple, so powerful. It's the most gorgeous book I've read in a very long time. It made the tears spring into my eyes. I plan to purchase a copy for each of my grandchildren and will squirrel it away as a gift for my husband who served 26 years in the Army.

A better title for this review would be, TOO CLINICAL FOR ME, because I am sure this book is valuable as a tool in the medical community. The only thing that stuck is that using a preventative medication, such as Valtrex, improves one's chances of NOT passing the virus on to someone else by 50%. Good to know. (I was looking for a more holistic approach.)

This book helped me to understand the various types of herpes and the different between them all. It also helped to dispelled myths that exist and varies testing methods, treatment and other option out there. I thought this book was very detailed oriented and easy to understand fulled with additional references and advise.

This book is accurate, easy to read, and written by a very well respected HSV researcher. It is slightly varied from most herpes books because is told from the perspective of a pediatrician. The size makes it approachable and easy to read in a short time, too.

Full disclosure: I’d call myself Anne Tyler’s “Number One Fan” if that line wasn’t so creepy (thanks a lot, Stephen King). So it’s no surprise that I adored “Clock Dance” and want everyone in the world to read it, and ALL of Tyler’s stellar oeuvre.I’m not the only fan who has called Tyler the “Jane Austen of our time”; the comparisons are obvious: beautiful writing, accessibility, colorful characters, perfectly pitched dialogue, and a focus on domestic stories. And woe be to anyone who considers “domestic stories” a lesser literary form, for it is in these stories of quotidian family life, punctuated by human drama, that we most recognize ourselves and develop empathy for others. If you never read a novel about the human condition, how would you learn to appreciate other people’s perspectives?Ok – to the review: “Clock Dance” is about Willa Drake who finally “wakes up” to her life. We first meet Willa in 1967 at age 11, on a day that her mother has “run away from home” yet again. Willa, Dad Melvin, and 6 year old sister Elaine, try to “act normal”. In 1967 you might describe Willa’s mom, Alice, as “tempestuous”, “high strung”, or “mercurial” – today you might diagnose Bi-polar Disorder or Borderline Personality Disorder.The first half of the novel describes the few life-changing moments/decisions in Willa’s life in 1977 and 1997 - short sections, to set the stage and establish Willa’s character. We root for Willa throughout but it’s clear that she is “sleep-walking” through her life. It is in the second half of the novel, set in the present (2017), that Willa makes a bold decision to help a young single mother. That decision becomes the “wake-up Willa, call” and provides her a door to a different future than the path she was on. Will she walk through that door?As in each and every Anne Tyler novel, there is a cast of characters that you will fall in love with and miss after you close the last page. Her characters are what make her novels SO “re-read-able” to me. I never read one just once.

Her books are definitely not what they used to be. I've read them all more than once but I can't get invested in the characters the way I used to. This one could have used another chapter to let us know what Willa's up to. That being said all her books are like putting on your old comfy sweatshirt and I'm sure I'll read the next one.

Willa Drake can count on one hand the defining moments of her life. In 1967, she is a schoolgirl coping with her mother’s sudden disappearance. In 1977, she is a college coed considering a marriage proposal. In 1997, she is a young widow trying to piece her life back together. And in 2017, she yearns to be a grandmother but isn’t sure she ever will be. Then, one day, Willa receives a startling phone call from a stranger. Without fully understanding why, she flies across the country to Baltimore to look after a young woman she’s never met, her nine-year-old daughter, and their dog, Airplane. This impulsive decision will lead Willa into uncharted territory–surrounded by eccentric neighbors who treat each other like family, she finds solace and fulfillment in unexpected places. A bewitching novel of hope and transformation, Clock Dance gives us Anne Tyler at the height of her powers.My Thoughts: In our journey through Clock Dance, we leap ahead to those defining moments in Willa’s life, from preteen years to the current time. What we learn about Willa and what she needed is how hopeful she always felt, while being basically unsatisfied. Her first husband, Derek, seemingly hijacked her life and her decisions, and even in his death, he was thinking only of himself as he made some fatal choices.Motherhood was also a time of meeting the needs of others, while ignoring her own. The realization of what she had given up for family and for husbands would later come to awaken her to those unmet needs and how very important they suddenly were to her. Her second husband could have been someone to fill in those blanks in her life, but again, he was someone who met his own needs first.I liked how Willa finally started making choices based on what she wanted and needed. Would she finally start to feel that fulfillment? Would an unexpected trip to Baltimore to help out her son’s ex-girlfriend offer the opportunity to surround herself with a collection of people who would begin to feel like an extended family? Could she learn that just when she thought she had to pick up her same old life, she could visualize a very different kind of life? One with room for the people and activities she longed to enjoy. 5 stars.

My Thoughts: Anne Tyler has been a longtime favorite author of mine, so I badly wanted to love Clock Dance. Sadly, I just didn’t. The synopsis speaks of the “defining moments” in main character, Willa Drake’s life, and for me that’s exactly where the story broke down. We all have defining moments, some we succumb to and others we rise from. From childhood until she was 60, Willa allowed everyone else to define her life. Her defining moments were ones in which she consistently remained passive, giving parts of herself up for the (often selfish) needs of others. By the time Willa began to show a little backbone, I’d given up on her. On a more positive note, I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful, quirky group of neighbors that Willa finally found herself a welcome part of. I felt the ending was abrupt.....I would have been so happy to read another twenty or so pages to smooth out Willa's transition. How about a sequel!There were a few loose ends, but that's life. Every part of this novel is completely believable and offers no magical resolutions. I fell in love with the characters that were important to the story and their affections for Willa. Willa reminds me of Maggie in Breathing Lessons and Delia in Ladder of Years. I loved Clock Dance and read it in two days - who can put a new Ann Tyler novel aside?

MurrayPublisher: The Gloucester County Times Date: 3/23/09Every day, thousands of motorists speed over what was once the longest steel suspension bridge in the world. Maybe only a handful even consider the work that went into erecting the Ben Franklin Bridge more than 80 years ago. A couple from Camden with strong ties to both the bridge itself and the region have put together a pictorial history of the span from its design phase a century ago to its present-day role as a key to transportation infrastructure between two states. "It was very interesting to go back and see it again as a new thing," author Mary Howard said about researching the latest local edition of Images of America: The Ben Franklin Bridge. "Nowadays, for all of us it's just part of our world and you take it back and forth to work. You almost forget what an amazing thing it was when it was first built." Howard, an editor in the medical publishing industry and a member of the Camden County Historical Society, put the book together along with her husband, Michael, an engineer for the Delaware River Port Authority. The DRPA oversees the maintenance and operation of the bridge. Michael said the book started after he put together a slideshow of pictures to commemorate the Ben's 80th anniversary. He sifted through hundreds of photos in the DRPA archives to come up with 40 pictures for the show. In this book, more than 200 photos, diagrams and copies of newspaper articles from the bridge's early years are included along with a brief historical account. "We could do a book that's twice the size of this," Michael Howard said, noting he and Maureen had to conform to the guidelines set up by the publisher. "It's a shame Ð We had all these pics laid out and it was literally like, ÔOh, can we use this?' It's like spring training in baseball when you have to cut down your roster," he added. There are construction shots and pictures of what buildings gave way in both Camden and Philadelphia to allow the massive bridge superstructures to be built. The four large concrete and granite anchorages on both sides of the river aren't just for show. They were to be used as rapid transit station lobbies for passengers to move from elevated rail lines to other modes of transportation like a trolley line that never came to be a reality. For Maureen, the newspaper accounts touting the virtues of the crossing proved to be most interesting for her. "Until it was built you had to get on a boat if you wanted to go to Philadelphia," she said. "I enjoyed having my eyes open in a sense and appreciating what an amazing thing it is." And it came at a time where manual labor was the order of the day. A time when grit, toughness and the best technology available at the time built grand structures that still dot the nation's skylines today. "When we talk with kids about it, they see how computers and big machines are around," Michael said. It wasn't the way back then. Do not expect this to be a French language course. Instead it is a great travel phrase helper. I am NOT gifted with an ear or a tongue for languages. Each time I travel, I struggle with attempting to say simple words and phrases in the native language. In the past, I tried similar program on cassette tapes and was able to navigate through my holidays with a descent travel vocabulary. When switching to modernizing to CDs, I tried more comprehensive courses thinking that I might learn additional words and phrases to enhance my holiday conversation. WRONG. On trips after the more comprehensive courses, I was lost in too much information and lost the essential holiday phrases. Who really needs to be able to say "the bus is blue" and "the house is red" while on holiday?

Oral seems fine but package would be better if accompanied with some written narrative following the tape course.

.The sound is very clear. The best so far. I highly recommend Mark Frobose audio cd's. I am glad I bought this cd's.

I used these to practice speaking French before going to France. Ooh-la-la! I was talking to all the people and they understood me! These work!

My first hint that something was wrong when the color cover came as a black and white copy. The CD's will not fit into a car CD player, they are too big! What total JUNK!!!

This is the best language instruction book I've downloaded from Audible. The English speaker can be goofy at times, and the editing is a little raw. But the native speaker is very easy to understand and a lot of ground is covered.

I was very impressed by this book and its art. I also love new and fresh interpretation of the Genesis creation narrative which, in my opinion, is much better than traditional.

Dear Liana Finck,While I don't believe I've encountered your writing or drawings before, I have to say the title of this novel intrigued me so greatly that I was unable to turn down the opportunity to read it and share my experience of it. But, having just finished it, I fear I'm not quite up to the task. I can hardly convey how deeply it touched me nor the recognition of something I only fondly and vaguely remember now. I am at something of a loss for words. Thank you for showing me something that I needed, something important that I'd forgotten. I could try and tell you how much I enjoyed your book but I fear it would be wholly inadequate. All I can manage is to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.

My only prior experience with graphic novels was with Dennis Cooper’s rather vulgar Horror Hospital Unplugged, so despite knowing about a number of critically acclaimed works like Maus, Fun Home and Persepolis, I still carried around a bit of a prejudice that they're mostly like the underground comix of my youth. Ralph Bakshi and Robert Crumb being two of the more well-known purveyors of a genre deemed “adult” simply because they were filled with naked women and rampant drug use. More juvenile than adult, if you ask me. That said, I was pleasantly surprised by Liana Finck’s tender and melancholy memoir, Passing for Human. It’s the story of a young woman who feels like a misfit in the world and her attempts to understand the origins of these feelings of “otherness” and whether to deny or embrace them.Initially Finck focuses on her mother’s background for clues, but switches to her father because he seems more comfortable letting his freak flag fly. Ultimately, however, this is a woman’s story. We see how both Finck and her mother before her, in their desire to seem less threatening and more conventional, suppress the things that make them unique, smothering their own artistic essence in order to be accepted by men. I’m familiar with Finck’s work as a cartoonist for the New Yorker magazine and her unabashedly primitive style lends itself to a woman reaching back into her past and seeing the world through the eyes of a child.This book really sneaks up on you. The ending is quite moving – both sad and hopeful at once. I was surprised that a graphic novel could have such power. During this new age of resurgent feminism, I think Passing for Human is timely and relevant.

Liana Finck has created a poignant and meaningful memoir that addresses profound existential questions. What does it mean to be “other”? Is creativity an attempt to find what has been lost? How are personal and familial characteristics transmitted through the generations?The author is lonely and conflicted. Relationships are difficult. She is consumed by doubt and fears which she brilliantly represents by drawing herself with rats on each shoulder; “our heroine’s fears gnaw at her like rats”. Her shadow represents her authentic and creative self. When she denies her unique otherness, she “loses her shadow”.We are also presented with a personal and female interpretation of various biblical stories that relate to her personal journey. The drawing style is simple and effective, generally black pen lines on white with one section reversed to white on black. You won’t find brilliant representation here. By no means is this a “comic”. There are no superheroes. In no sense is this a storyboard for an adventure movie. What you will find is an approachable, meaningful and poignant memoir that has great emotional resonance.

Ms Finck explains several times, "A draw-er doesn't draw because she loves to draw. She doesn't draw because she draws well. She draws because once she lost something and by drawing - -she will find it again. In this, her graphic memoir, Ms Finck tries to show what indeed she lost and must find. Her writing of "Passing for Human" is her tool for this search. She writes the book so named five times. The first - her mother's story - she tears up after being gnawed on by doubt in the form of rats and begins to write the book again and, at one of the rats suggestion it is the story of her father.The rats of doubt, however, tell her "You shouldn't have dragged your kind well-adjusted dad into your neurological coming of age story. Well, you know the drill. Rip it up. Start at the beginning." And so she does, It's a story of schools, tyrannical nuns, mean children, loneliness and the loss of a loved pet dog. On her own she crumbles the story and tries again. This time "Passing for Human" is the tale of a relationship with a man that did not work out. As she reflects on her life she says "as a child, I had only stories. The stories my mother told me. She made a House that was the Garden of Eden, and she put me inside it. When I grew up, I couldn't stay there, What I must do now is make my own story. To Live in it. To survive." What follows is the last Passing for Human book. The general course of the complete story is a journey from blaming and victamhood to taking charge of her life.- a worthy trip indeed.Each "Book" has a tile page and each is different. There is the tile on field of yellow on each and each is framed by black and white drawings. Of these the last is unique being a riot of living, acting children animals and God. In the book Ms Finck tells stories based on stories from the Hebrew Bible and as Jenny Lawson noted in her fine N.Y Times review (9/30/2018) makes much of light, shadows, otherness, isolation. It's truly a rich book with many facets. It's quite good. Recommended
