If you've never purchased a Hanna Karlzon coloring book, check them out. She has awesome designs. Apparently, Johanna Basford likes her work because many of the pictures in this book resemble images in Ms Karlzon's books, in particular the scarabs. I own many of Johanna Basford's previous coloring books. This book occasionally gives you a touch of her other works. But, many of the pages have large blank spaces. I purchase Johanna Basford's books because she usually provides full pages of unique & whimsical images to color. This book does the opposite. You get a wreath w/ nothing else on the page or a page w/ just 4 flowers on it. Occasionally you get a page or 2 pages together w/ full images. Unfortunately, many of those images resemble my grandmother's wallpaper. I own about 40 coloring books. I have no problem spending upwards of $15 for a good book. I preordered this book expecting something similar to Ms. Basford's previous works. I was quite disappointed in this book. There is nothing new or exciting in this. I may be being harder on Ms. Basford based on her previous works. But, her previous works are the reason I preordered this book. Seriously, too much ugly wallpaper design & inspiriration from other artists. I already own the books by the other artists. I wanted a new Johanna Basford designed book. This isn't it.

This is a pretty awesome book. I like flowers but don’t love them. I love this book though. I’m not going to spend a lot of time typing. I’m just going to show you some more pictures. That’s the best way to decide if you want something. The covers of the book are beautifully designed as always and the paper is a nice heavy paper as usual. I love, love, love the picture with the flowers in the truck. I would say my least favorite pictures are the Beatles. Thankfully there aren’t many of those. What is your favorite. Update your review once you receive your book. Just curious what picture other people pick as their favorite. I’m going to color my favorite one right now. (Truck picture)

I have ALL of Johanna’s, Hanna Karlzon, Klara Markova, & Maria Trolle’s (plus other artists’) color books. While l’ve gotten spoiled & now prefer the hardbound books with the excellent grade of paper for coloring, I also love Johanna’s books previous to this one.Also as stated by others, when I opened the book the first time, the binding made a cracking sound & a few of the last pages fell completely out.The paper in this book is very coarse. When I layer the colors (Prismacolor Premier) it’s like they glob on top of each other without spreading and blending together. Just using a single color, I had to bear down to get it spread evenly so it turns out messier than I like. I took a picture of an area where I used a light hand & you can see the paper has a heavy tooth (more texture, better suited for charcoal & pastels). Then I layered white on top, with a heavier hand & the color underneath doesn’t blend, it stacks. I posted another picture from a Klara Markova book where l layered multiple colors & they blended so nicely because the paper is smoother. It’s really a bummer as I don’t enjoy coloring on this type of paper & most likely won’t color any further in this book.I would love a duplicate book with the quality heavy grade paper made for pencils!

This is strictly a review on binding. I hadn't even finished looking through the book when the last 1/3 of the pages dropped out of it. There was no fixing it. I had to disassemble it entirely. Fortunately the glue was so poorly done the pages came out just like the pages of the artist's editions of her previous books.I really miss the sewn bindings. My copies of SG and EF are still solidly bound. I've thumbed through them hundreds of times and not a single page lost.Johanna's skill and talent are NOT in question here. Even with shoddy binding problems I still love her works the best. All of the pictures in this book are beautiful and the paper quality is wonderful.I heard of the Ivy books falling apart and haven't purchased one because of that. Looks like there may be the same problems with this one too.Poor Johanna; I wish her publishers would use printers that are of the same caliber quality as her art.Keep doing what you do, Johanna. Cheers!

I have recently picked up adult coloring again after taking a break. This book’s timing could not have been more perfect! I have all of Johanna Basford’s previous books and I think this might be my favorite. Of course it includes many many flowers for coloring, but it also includes elements throughout that recall the charming sweetness found in “Secret Garden” and the magic in “Enchanted Forest.” The drawings are varied and include pages that should appeal to both the beginning colorist and the advanced. I haven’t found any pages with impossibly tiny details I personally find frustrating to color (think “Lost Ocean”-absolutely beautiful- but felt more like tedious work and less fun to color).The paper in “World of Flowers” feels smooth but with just enough tooth to handle several layers of color. I’ve experImented with Faber-Castell Polychromos, Prismacolor Premier, and Caran d’ache Luminance; all layer and blend beautifully in these drawings. The paper is heavy and feels the same, or similar, as the paper printed in “Magical Jungle” (U.S edition).Thank you, once again Johanna Basford, for creating this beautiful book and ensuring the many many hours of happy coloring in my future!

This is my favorite book out of all of them. If you love flowers and intricate details, you’ll love this book!

I know this author is my mom’s favourite so when happened upon it on Amazon, pre-ordering was def a must. What my mother is not a huge fan of is flowers so I was super surprised when my mother stated this was one of her favourite books in the author’s collection. In her words “I just love it”. Apparently, it is also larger than some other the author’s other releases and chock full of some pretty intricate stuff. It made a great “just because” gift :)

I had to wait to wipe the tears just now. Please read this book and then look at how much talent was lost to the world because of that HORRIBLE thing known as WW2. It was so senseless.

There were several books to choose from and not knowing the differences, I chose this one although I did read the reviews as well. Since then I have ordered one of the other books, i.e. Eva's Story, which I have since learned is more of an accurate account of the atrocities that happened during captivity, although I have not yet read it. The Promise was good but apparently written more for children.

Great book

I read this book before I saw the play, which just premiered last weekend. I also had the honor to meet Eva Schloss herself at that time. It is a very moving book which brings to life the horrific experiences of a young girl during the Holocaust. I had never heard of this stepsister of Anne Frank's before which made it extra special. If you found reading Anne Frank's diary moving, you will also "enjoy" reading this book. It is a very easy but powerful read. I recommend this book highly.

This book gave me more details on Eva's brother's artwork and his natural abilities. It also showed this family determination to live on through future generations.

A really good book, but really a kids book. This is a bit of a toned down version of the authors first book Eva's Story. I wish I had known what type of book it was before I bought it, but it was still a good read.

This is a very moving account of strength and enduring love for a son who did not survive the cruelties of both the SS and fellow Jewish prisoners, who became what they had to in order to increase their own chances for survival. They surely be forgiven and not be judged harshly in view of their own circumstances during the Holocaust.

Surratt emphasizes that small groups are the primary option for disciple making within a church. He urges churches to be intentional in recruiting for small groups and to simplify the process for directing and joining small groups. Like many current authors of books on small-group ministry, Surratt stresses that small groups must reach beyond themselves to engage their local communities. The “secret sauce” for small groups, according to Surratt, is an atmosphere that fosters camaraderie (“you, too?”) and vulnerability.I appreciated Surratt’s tone. He does not come off as having all the answers or that the process his church uses is the only process that churches can use to successfully grow small groups. He offers wisdom, but reveals the mistakes he’s made along the way. He also tackles the most pervasive difficulties of small- group ministries: reaching men, reaching single men, determining the correct size of groups, providing child care, and recruiting leaders.Surratt’s design strives to balance control from church hierarchy with organic groups that form around affinity. He critiques what he calls “free-market” small groups that form solely around affinity in favor of what he terms a “modified, free-market system.” He writes, “A free-market system is great for assimilating a lot of people into small groups; however, you have to make sure those groups include God. Otherwise they’re just social clubs with a theme” (6-7). His modified system includes allowing the small groups to choose their own approved curriculum (via a curriculum menu), although the groups are asked to participate in church-wide campaigns twice a year. There are also small-group coaches for the small-group leaders who help provide oversight, while allowing for freedom.Surratt stresses that the senior pastor’s involvement as the champion for small-group ministry is key to success. “It’s not impossible to build a successful small-group system without the senior leader being fully on board, but it’s extremely difficult. The congregation is going to take its cues from the leaders, and if the senior pastor is not engaged in community, they will follow his lead,” (64) he writes. Surratt says that the senior pastor is not always the ideal candidate to lead the group that the pastor attends. In any case, the senior pastor is the linchpin for successful small-group ministry.Small Groups for the Rest of Us tackles a couple of common thorny topics that repeatedly arise within United Methodism. Surratt helps us look at the question, “What constitutes a small group?” Without being clear about the core elements of a small group, churches often find themselves in confusion about whether the ushers or the sewing club count as small groups.Surratt makes a useful distinction between ministry teams and small groups. He contends that small groups balance “evangelism, community, and mission” (110). But he says, “A ministry group can only focus on one or two of those practices at a time” (111). Those three core elements of a small group are similar to those identified by Eric Geiger in Transformational Groups and Transformational Discipleship: formation, connection, and mission.Surratt also offers advice about the roles of small groups and Sunday school classes. For Surratt, this comes down to being clear about the role of each.Surratt reminds us that since discipleship is fundamentally about helping people grow, there is no standard way people move through the process. “This strategy makes for straight lines on paper, but spiritual formation doesn’t always lay out in pretty, straight lines. No two people move toward Jesus the exact same way” (41). He also observes that “proven concepts and principles” are more important than particular systems as each church has a unique context. This is helpful reminder as many churches are seeking a “discipleship pathway” that not everyone will move through the pathway the same way. (Although John Wesley’s movement from prevenient grace to justifying grace and into sanctifying grace is a framework United Methodists forget at their own peril!)For all the wisdom and helpful advice that Surratt passes along, there are a couple of places where the book falls short. While Surratt’s critique of focusing on affinity groups is beneficial, those of us trained in Safe Sanctuaries might see some red flags. His defense for using leaders with little or no training is that Jesus didn’t look to the established leaders around him (77). This assertion rang a little hollow for me. He requires groups to sign a covenant at the beginning of each semester that looks more like a list of expectations than any sort of “rule of life.” Surratt does believe that leaders should be trained. In fact, he’s a proponent of growing future church leaders through small-group leader training. However, he maintains that the training can be done while the leader is learning to be a leader and not prior to becoming a leader. While I’m hesitant to agree, Surratt offers insights into practices for small-group leader development.One area that I think smaller churches might challenge is the availability of resources that Surratt sometimes seems to assume. Particularly when he covers budgetary issues. Though he’s correct that in order to prioritize small-groups it will require an investment of the church attention and money.I’m not certain that I agree with Surratt’s observation that “couples groups will always struggle when it comes to being open and vulnerable [and that] most men will not open up in front of their spouse.” (118). However, he is right to raise those sorts of dynamics for churches to consider. He does add sound reasons for having same-gender groups. He has also concluded and my own experience has tended to prove him correct that, “The unfortunate reality, is that most people don’t read anymore. Especially guys” (115).Surratt’s book will be beneficial for many churches. While no church will take everything he has written as the gospel on small groups, Surratt offers a lot of practical wisdom for churches to struggle with in order to design effective small-group ministry that equips and makes disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

As a groups pastor I always add in several books on researching ideas, strategies, suggestions on ways to continue to tweak small group systems. Over the years I have learned a lot from others in this area and continue to add modifications in where I can. There is no system that works completely all the time and the best small groups system in any church is custom-designed for it to meet the needs of why the system exists there.In “Small Groups for the Rest of Us“, Chris Surratt does a good job taking this approach of someone who has also tweaked a system to fit the needs of the church it was in. I like that the book isn’t proposing just a new system but more or less some best practices per se that can be implemented and spliced into an existing system. Surratt does well in being honest about places where they struggled along the way and even where they may not have things completely figured out yet.As Surratt states in the book:IN A GROWING CHURCH, EVERY SYSTEM SHOULD BE TWEAKED OR COMPLETELY BLOWN UP EVERY FEW YEARS.I do also like that Surratt wrote a bit about multi-site group structure in this since that is an area of group ministry I am currently looking to learn more about.If you are a small group director or pastor I would recommend this book and choose some best practices to implement. You don’t necessarily need to add them all in at once but by making a few changes here and there you can gain traction quite quickly.YOU WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT WORKS FOR YOUR CHURCH UNTIL YOU PUT IT INTO ACTION. Chris Surratt really answered a need with this book. There are lots of "how-to" books out there, but not many "why" books and why not. Chris shares his honest failures right along with his successes and it makes for a very helpful book on developing and seeing success with your small group initiative. Highly recommend and definitely one I will read again and again.

I've been the groups director at my church for several years now, and I've always been frustrated by the lack of down to earth resources available. Thankfully, Chris Surratt has wrote a book to fix that problem. Gleaning from his years of experience serving and consulting with multiple churches around the country Chris has written, in my opinion, the best book on small groups ministry on the market. If you're in anyway connected to groups ministry, I highly recommend you pick up this book. You won't regret it.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed any previous decks by Colette Baron Reid (as there are a number of them I own, I read quite frequently, and that I have purchased for others as gifts). There is a couple reasons this did not earn five stars from me (more on that in a moment). I find this deck is mostly suited for personal exploration. It is positive and affirming and look at the good side of all cards in the Tarot. Unlike some of the author's other decks, there are no reverse interpretations.First...the nitty-gritty about this deck. This is a full 78-card Tarot deck with a major and minor arcana. The majors are numbered 0-21. Card titles are mostly the same with the exception of the following: Love = Lovers, Fortune's Wheel = Wheel of Fortune, Transformation = Death, Patience = Temperance, Temptation = Devil, Call = Judgement. Minor Arcana suits are: Air = Swords, Water = Cups, Earth = Pentacles, and Fire = Wands. Court cards are: Pages, Messengers = Knights, Queens and Kings.Majors focus as normal on major themes or lessons. Court cards reflect attitudes/states of mind and, of course, can represent people or aspects of a personality that may be influencing a situation. Overall, the book gives a nice brief background on the arcanas and card suits. All interpretations are personalized to the reader ("All that glitters isn't gold, I know that I always deserve authentic riches, the gold that fills me with joy, abundance, and understanding"--from interpretation for the 8 of Water). This makes it an ideal deck for personal explorations and affirmation work.The artwork has a soft, dreamy, magical quality. I like the artistic interpretation of the hermit, for example.There is no wise old man walking with a cane and a lantern. There is light shining on what appears to be a door (with a kingly face on it). There are keys hanging above the door to choose from. You have to look around a bit to discover where the keyhole is. It's there, and I wonder why I missed it the first time. I like the symbology behind this image as it seems to fit well with what the traditional hermit stands for.The art doesn't work for me with some of the cards. Death (Transformation), for example, I can't see exactly what is in the girl in the picture's hands (I assume it is something transforming into something else). But my old eyes just can't make it out. The Emperor, Love (Lovers), and the Strength cards all feature lions prominently. The size of the cards is also a problem, as some other reviewers have indicated. They are wide and difficult for my small, somewhat arthritic hands to shuffle.I also wish there was a little more meat to these interpretations or that there were reverse interpretations. While I have no problem with Baron-Reid's positive, happy approach to interpreting the Tarot, I do disagree with her about reversals. She mentions that most people get discouraged with reversals, so she did not include them. While that is true, a number of reversed tarot cards are actually more positive when reversed than when they appear upright. I think that added nuance would've been helpful and reversals could have all been cast in a positive light as well. There is nothing to fear in a negative card as they are lessons we must all face. She does a magnificent job taking negative cards in the deck (such as the 10 of Swords, 3 of Swords, or the 5 of Pentacles) and showing us the light illuminating or emanating from these so-called dark moments in our lives.I feel this deck is more suitable for meditation, exploring in depth changes you are undergoing or contemplating, counseling yourself or others, and for a daily affirmation. I will probably rarely read for others with this deck, but will find it useful in my personal divination work. If you want a deck to work with for personal oracle work this is probably right for you. If you are new to the Tarot, you may want to seek out a more traditional deck first and become more familiar with the cards if you plan on reading for both yourself and others.

When I first saw that Colette Baron-Reid was doing a tarot deck, I hoped that it would be as amazing as her oracle decks. This deck is nothing short of beautiful and the energy in them is inspiring. This is not your standard tarot deck in the slightest. There are no negative or reverse meanings in the little book provided. She has taken the effort to take the more negative cards (Tower and Devil) and written them to have a more positive connotation. These cards are also written for the here and now, not vague "you may be going on a trip". Instead, she's changed it to, "I am travelling to new territories and am eager to experience all that this land has to offer me". She also takes the traditional suits to reflect the elements they represent:Swords = AirCups = WaterPentacles = EarthWands = FireThe cards themselves are on good paper, aren't flimsy, won't tear, and are laminated. They are the size of her oracle cards, not standard tarot cards. They are definitely an uplifting favorite and give positive messages. It is definitely a GOOD tarot and worth purchasing.

This is VERY disappointing. It is certainly lovely artwork (thus two stars). It is NOT Tarot. Goodness separated from challenge is impractical, unrealistic, and meaningless - like knitting without the yarn. Our challenges & adversity lead us to growth & the development of our abilities, self-discovery, and potentials. Colette knows this as is evident in her booklet - even she cannot remove this deck entirely from adversity despite her efforts. Tarot is objective, neutral - good & bad lie within people's perspectives & fear is born of ignorance. There is nothing to fear in true Tarot. The symbology here is random and nebulous at best, by & large limited in the extreme. While lovely the images are unclear, hazy - even with a magnifying glass. Thus the Major Arcana has lost its potency entirety. What has a woman looking away from the reader have to do with patience? What on earth is the significance of a giraffe here? Without the booklet to explain each card, one is challenged to find any correlation between the card's image and meaning in either arcana. And reducing the suits to simple elements completely removes the full significance and vast depth the suits are designed to convey. So goes the broad psychological value and insightful clarity of the lesser arcana. Again there is little to no symbology to guide or feed the intuition on any card. What remains is make believe. By her own admission, this is simply another of Colette's oracle decks, and I expected much better from her. I honor her intention, but the result is sadly lacking. I wonder at her understanding of the true philosophy of Tarot? The art work IS beautiful, but this is certainly not a Tarot deck, much less a 'good' one.
