Review
“. . . one of the best introductions and surveys in recent times. Remarkably attractive in its layout, with color pictures, color pictures, charts, diagrams and sidebars galore . . . If it's backgrounds you want to highlight in a one-semester introduction to the New Testament, this is the text to assign.†-- Craig L. Blomberg, PhD“Complete with an extraordinary array of visual illustrations, this book covers important topics needed for an introductory text in New Testament in a way that is both understandable and well-informed. It emphasizes many details that help students discover the biblical text in new ways they would rarely get on their own.†-- Craig S. Keener

From the Back Cover
The New Testament in Antiquity is a textbook for college and seminary students penned by three evangelical scholars with over fifty years of combined experience in the classroom. Their challenge was to build a text that would be engaging, academically robust, richly illustrated, and relevant to the modern student. This book strikes a balance between being accessible to all students and challenging them to explore the depths of the New Testament within its cultural worlds. The New Testament in Antiquity carefully develops how Jewish and Hellenistic cultures formed the essential environment in which the New Testament authors wrote their books and letters. It argues that knowing the land, history, and culture of this world brings remarkable new insights into how we read the New Testament itself. Numerous sidebars provide windows into the Jewish, Hellenistic, and Roman worlds and integrate this material directly with the interpretation of the literature of the New Testament. This is an ideal introductory text for classroom use, with ample discussion questions and bibliographies.

Gary Burge and the others have produced a first rate text book for New Testament Introduction. But, more promising, The New Testament in Antiquity is a first rate book for all believers interested in knowing the history and background of their Bible, specifically the New Testament. As a Seminary graduate, I learned new things from Burge and his colleagues. As a Christian, I learned new ways to apply the Bible to life and was actually sharing information with others after the first 25 pages! As a reader, I was engaged from the first few pages with interesting copy and wonderful added works from antiquity. As a 20-plus teacher of higher ed, I would use this book (and none other) for a course in NT Introduction.I love that we start with the prophets and the Exile period... it naturally leads us up to the NT period without undue wasted time. I know some like to establish a theology first, such as the Covenants, but starting like this engages students (and me) from the get-go. The illustrations, pictures, sidebars are some of the best. Layout (print book) is fantastic. It is hard not to like everything about The New Testament in Antiquity: A Survey of the New Testament within Its Cultural Context.CONS: What is not to like?Okay... One thing I would have liked: More thorough overview of the Books of the Bible. What there is great, and I found myself wanting for more. I understand the purpose of the book is for introduction and overview, so you can't simply add several pages per Biblical Book without losing this focus, so I shouldn't complain...but I will anyway. :)
The book itself is interesting and offers a summary of textual criticism, cultural background, and the highlights and theology from each NT book. It also has many images and "pop-outs" (truly feels like a textbook). However, the Kindle edition has been full of spacing typos and added letters. Here are some examples from chapter one:"His followers were transformed by what they saw and experienced,ex and they carried faith in Jesus to...""The New Testament contains four Gospels outlining Jesu Jesus' life...""Today many Christians know the basic elements of this story and enjoy an intimate,n deeply personal love for many passages..."Maybe typos such as these are unique to my Kindle, but never-the-less it is annoying. For a textbook, this is an inexpensive work. However, for someone who lives in SE Asia and does not get paid in US dollars, $35 is expensive for an electronic version of a book (though it saved me a lot on shipping costs).
I thought this was a very interesting book and help for the class discussions in the New Testament (a survey class). I felt at times that it was bogged down with an unnecessary amount of ancient culture before getting to that which pertains to the New Testament writings. At times it also made a strange distinction between Judaism and Christianity, as if they were two separate religions that just happen to have a lot in common instead of one being derived from the other. As stated in other reviews, the Kindle edition is tragic, with misspellings, double words and parts of words; as well as areas that are complete gibberish. It's still plenty usable and the vast majority of information is there, it is just frustrating to read through at times.
pretty good 50 series or survey level (VERY basic) text. I have seen the print version. It's easy to understand, well written with alot of very good photos and sidebars. With a title like NTIA, I had hoped for a solid 100 level text or even a 200 level text.I WOULD recommend the text in print formThe kindle edition however is rife with formatting errors, misspellings. There needs to be a "second edition" of the kindle version.
I am currently using this textbook as a part of my seminary class and it is such a great resource. The pictures and sidebars give a lot of context and background for the reader and the book is well written and chocked full of information. Great resource for anyone wanting to know the background and history of the New Testament Era!
This book is very informative and helps make history come alive with great diagrams, pictures and interesting narratives. Helps to transform your understanding of antiquity and thus better understand the biblical contex in a more in-depth manner.
the book was in good condition. I haven't read much of it yet, but I like that it includes photographs, and other imagery so the reading isn't too arduous.
Fantastic book that goes through the genre, context, and an explanation of the new Testament. This is a spectacular book with many examples and real-life pictures of ancient finds. A great book for the classroom and a great book for exploration within the New Testament.Thank You and Blessings!
