This book covers a very broad spectrum of material, covering complicated and nuanced topics and concepts, and does so in a very readable and easy to grasp manner. Critical theory is pretty heady stuff, and it will invite you think in new ways, but with this book you are less likely to be lost and frustrated. This is the best single introduction that I have read, and beyond that, it is just a really good read. I learned new things, and was also able to cement concepts I had been introduced to previously but perhaps without the same breadth. This is really an astonishing work; students should be happy.

Ordered this book for a class and found it to contain lively prose, with clear introductions to the methods of thinking. It doesn't replace the source material it summarizes, nor does it intend to, but as a reference to the major schools of thought is serves well. 'It ended up on my bookshelf in the office beside several reference books on writing and now, a year after the class has ended, I find myself returning to it to un-obfuscate concepts I come across in critical theory. You could, while reading Althusser, return to his source texts by Marx (which it's unclear if he read) or come to this book to refresh your understanding of Marxist theory and then the Structuralist thought he incorporates in a few pages.It's not an absolute must in a digital age, but the writing is clearer and more succinct than a wikipedia article, the organization is well thought out and indexed, the paragraphs relatively brief and as comprehensive as you can expect. There is a fair amount of summary to keep things in context and diglossia to keep it in English. Examples are ample and useful.It's a book I kept after the class and will return to while in school.

Helpful book for those trying to learn about Literary Theory for the first time. We used it in my Literary Theory and Criticism graduate-level English course.

Great introduction on various critical theories. I liked the author's casual, conversational tone. It made everything easier to take in. I think he did a great job explaining every theory and this is one textbook I'm going to actually hold on to for future references.

Parker gives an understandable overview of the main camps of literary theory; however, his own bias shines through, he can be tedious, and he could do a better job of showing the practical application of theory. Students can be left wondering what to do with the terms they've just digested. Though Parker does a decent job, I favor Lois Tyson's Critical Theory Today for a more accessible and practical introduction to theory, especially for young students.

If you need or want to understand the major approaches to interpreting literature, including the practical application of that theory to a sample text, then this is your very readable resource. Very highly recommended.

Funny and informative! The author uses relatable analogies to explain some denser theories, and delves into really interesting symbolism and tropes.

I really enjoy the writing style of this author. Many academic books come across as very boring and hard to read, but this one is interesting and written with a little humor.

I have purchased a couple of other books from the pen of Ben Ohmart within the last several years and so when I first learned that a book about Mel Blanc was on the horizon I couldn't wait until it's release.Throughout the book there is commentary from Mel's son, Noel, taken from an unpublished biography that Noel wrote about his father. Noel's words appear in bold print. There is considerable detail written about Mel's near fatal car accident in 1961, the impact Bugs Bunny made in reviving him from a coma, and the long road to recovery that lay ahead in a full body cast. You'll see pictures of Mel during that time period and read about all the effort made by the various cartoon studios to turn his hospital room, and later, his home, into a temporary recording studio.Ohmart's book features many, many, MANY facts about a man who became one of the most busiest actors in radio, cartoons, and records...and later added television appearances to his long list of credits.Speaking of credits...this book gives a detailed account on everything that Mel Blanc took part in from the early days of his career through his final projects in 1989. It's truly a fabulous, unique, and addictive kind of book for those who are not only fans of Mel Blanc but of classic animated cartoons in general, whether theatrically released or made-for-TV. You get a cartoon-by-cartoon snapshot detailing Mel's involvement in the project, however major or minor it might've been; plus, you get a complete overview of his recording career and the comedy records that were released on him and the numerous radio programs that he either guest starred in or had recurring characters in. An entire separate book could've easily been published to examine these credits but they've all been collected and presented within this one book.The book is also filled with quotes and remembrances by a long list of celebrities in an out of animation that Mel worked with or were inspired by. Mel's friendship with Jack Benny is explored in more detail in this book, too. The book is lengthy but this shouldn't be a surprise for an actor of Mel's considerable longevity. Before hitting national radio in the late '30s, right around the time he was just starting his decades long run with Warner Brothers cartoons, Mel was a feature on local radio for a period of years in Oregon. In addition to the written word there are plenty of pictures throughout. Some of the images, I assume, are exclusive to the book as I hadn't seen quite a few of them until now.Practically all facets of the entertainment industry that existed from the 1920's through the late 1980's, Mel Blanc at some point played a part in. Though his lasting legacy is the theatrical cartoons he did for Warner Brothers, his voice was heard on the radio, on records, and on television for decades. His voice is still being heard...repeats of "The Flintstones" and "The Jetsons", for example, continue to air to this day on Boomerang. Mel played the roles of Barney Rubble and Dino on "The Flintstones" and Mr. Spacely on "The Jetsons". In each series he also provided voices for incidental characters, too, in addition to his main roles.Everything about the book's presentation is great and the details are extraordinary.

As the voice of Bugs Bunny Daffy Duck Porky Pig Yosemite Sam The Roadrunner Marvin the Martian Tweety and Sylester and later Elmer Fudd not to mention Woody Woodpecker-especially the laugh- and on the Flintstones Dino and Barney Rubble -not to mention other stuff I cant name off for one reason or another Mel Blanc has richly become the man of 1000 voices as his nickname goes and hes richly deserved it. He also sang songs and while some of them were with his cartoon voices others were with other made up voices and occoinally he sang with his real voice. This is his biography and its an iteresting read especially since it covers his career as well as his life. You should get it.

My grandson wanted the Mel Blanc book for his thirteenth Birthday. When he visits, he reads me a chapter. I will be 80 in July but did not know who Mel Blanc was. He has taught me so much.

I loved everything about this book, it was both inspiring, and informative, so many great things to learn from this book, 100% recommend this book!

More than half of this thick, expensive soft-cover book is simply a listing of credits. Every radio show, every cartoon, just names, dates and plots. Ho-hum. Even the biggest fan would be bored with this filler. And talk about TMI...do we really need the names of the cops who showed up at Blanc's auto accident?! The few photos are very badly reproduced, much worse than in a newspaper. They're faint and washed-out, with streaks. Mr. Blanc's fascinating story deserved a much better book, such as his own "That's Not All, Folks!" As for the audiobook, I wonder if the narrator read all those credits? It would take hours and hours.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Quammen is a master science writer, on the level of Sagan, Asimov, and Schaller. This book belongs in every public library and should be required reading in high school and college science classes. Wonderful; poetic; informative. Quammen has the gift of making difficult concepts easy to grasp. He provides fascinating insights to many of the lesser-known scientists whose work has been largely eclipsed by more famous luminaries such as Darwin, without doing disservice to Darwin himself. I love this book.

This is surely one of the most important books on the environment to come out of the latter part of the 20th Century. It is highly readable for anyone who is really interested in how we have come to the environmental place we're at today, particularly in regard to species extinction. If you are familiar with Quammen's works then you know that he is a very gifted writer and explainer. In Song of the Dodo, he teaches by combining history, environmental science, personal experience and anecdotes--not to mention his wonderfully impish "gossip columnist" quality when he describes personalities and academic battles over major biological questions. That said, he is always respectul of the scientists he interviews and of their work and goes to great lengths to really understand it so that he can give his readers the most accurate version possible of the material he covers. Quammen traveled extensively to research and write this tome, visiting many islands and archipelagos that were, and I assume still are, used as models for how extinction happens on continents when we break up the natural landscape, leaving only patches of it that become like islands for the wildlife living on those patches. There is just so very much in this book! You will read both heartening and heartbreaking stories of attempts to save species on the brink of extinction. So much of this book seems deeply personal for Quammen and for the people he engages with. It is long--about 600 pages--but I swear I learned more than 600 pages worth in reading it. Toward the end of the book I could feel that little shift in my mind, that feeling of having broadened and deepened my understanding of something very important. I am excited to move next to Quammen's new book, The Tangled Tree. I would also recommend a new book to read in conjunction with Song of the Dodo, and that is The Human Planet: How We Created the Anthropocene.

This is a great book for anyone who has started a journey learning about Evolution but wants to understand a crucial ingredient that led to the discovery of Evolution; Island Biogeography. David Quammen is a gifted writer that understands his readers want the soul of the science rather than algebraic formulas, but who can handle key concepts. This book details a lot about pivotal figures of biogeography from Alfred Wallace to Robert MacArthur and EO Wilson, taking you into the history of it and then later expanding on issues of conservation that biogeography relates to. It’s also filled with tearful episodes that I won’t spoil, but needless to say that this book is a serious call to action for anyone to do their part.

Quammen is truly becoming one of my favorite authors. As a naturalist, the topics he writes about are interesting to me, but that's only a fraction of his charm. He also has a very anecdotal and "friendly" writing style that I find very engaging. How can I not be charmed by a man who concludes his chapter on biogeographic logarithms with, "Hello, are you still with me? Sorry about all that." He knows his audience.It took me a long time to read this book not because it wasn't interesting, but because it covered a wide-range of related topics. It was as if several good books had been rolled into one.The book focuses on biogeography. Quammen talks about the great people who've contributed to the field (beginning with Darwin and Wallace, of course,) and also talks about island extinctions (as they have been much more numerous than continental extinctions).I found the stories about Darwin and Wallace fascinating. The chapters on rare, extinct, and (unfortunately) introduced species were the best part of the book for me. He also talks about recent studies and debates like SLOSS. Then Quammen ends the book with his own trip to Aru after years of carrying around a copy of Wallace's The Malay Archipelago.My one criticism is in regards to the Kindle edition due to the page numbers and percentage. When I finished the book, it said I was only 60% done even though the chapters before the glossary end around page 600 out of 695. That's not 60% Kindle.I recommend this book to anyone with interest in islands, habitat carrying capacity, and the history of natural sciences. It's a sober topic and an eye-opening read, but Quammen throws in some of his charm and wit as needed and expected.

This is a dense book that takes a lot of attention, but it's well worth the effort. Quammen writes in a surprisingly breezy style for what is, in the end, a scholarly book. He talks about Darwin and Wallace and others and examines both how species originate and die off, with particular attention to the biology of islands. I'm still working my way through it, but it is engrossing, and, by the way, although I often read books on line, it's a book like this that reinforces the value of print, as I go back and forth to re-read some previous passage that sheds light on a new idea and mark pages that I want to come back to. Again, it's a heavy (both literally and figuratively) book, but I recommend it highly.

As a huge fan of Percy Jackson, I was so excited to continue the adventure with The Heroes of Olympus. After reading this book, the first in the series, I'm neither satisfied nor disappointed. It was nice to dive back in to the world of Camp Half-Blood but I just couldn't get too involved with the new characters like I did with Percy and his crew. I also purchased the second book to try and get more into it, that book will determine whether I continue the series or not.As for if I would recommend this book, I'd say it's worth a try. :-)

I love a good book. My favorites are usually modern day stories about normal people with a little bit of magic thrown in to make it interesting. I originally started reading the Percy Jackson series because my granddaughter liked the movie. So I bought her the series and we read at least a chapter or two every time we spend a few hours together. My girl does most of the reading and I sort of explain the parts or words she doesn't understand. We've almost finished all of the Percy Jackson series. And I must confess, since I read just a bit faster, I've moved onto the Lost Hero series. It started a bit slower than the other books. But as I read the story I found myself wondering how it was going to play out. Greek mythology is just as fascinating as Roman mythology. I like that they're being mixed together and how these series are overlapping. The message I see in both series is one of honesty, and friendship and trust. The concept of right and wrong should be installed into young people at an early age. Age appropriate explanations of actions and consequences. These books have helped my granddaughter, who is just about 8 years old, to learn to think about what will happen once she has said or done something. I'm thankful there are stories that have captured her interest and attention. She is also beginning to understand that the lessons these books are helping her to learn will help her throughout her life!! That is the best compliment I can give to any author and his/her stories.

The three short storieswe're interesting but less than a chapters worth of material. There were a few notes also less than chapter worth of material that was interviews with a couple characters. In all honesty if it wasn't for the fact that years ago when I read the series a couple times it always annoyed me that I didn't know the short stories that was referenced in a few places in the series and sequence series I wouldn't have bought this. This is something strictly for those who are collecting all of Rick Riordan's works.I also think that the stories do feel sort of out of place because they do not really refer to the rest of the series the flow is not quite as smooth as the Main works from the author.Each of the stories does have the feeling of a Percy Jackson book where he is thrown into an adventure and has to overcome a situation. It really was I think just a way to hold off readers back in the day while they waited for the fifth book to come out. I think that the price range for this book should be around $5 instead of twice that much. There is a crossword puzzle and a work van in the back of the book that can be printed out perhaps.I do enjoy the series as a whole and finally was able to scratch the itch to read the stories hear that was referenced in the next book and a few times in the later series.

Rick Riordan starts another great story! I am a great fan of Percy Jackson, and was excited to see a new series. The author introduces new characters but has not changed his style of getting you to know and care about them, until they become real people to the reader. Too many dismiss books nowadays as copies or derivatives of older well known works. In that light , everything can be considered a copy of something else. I always approach a book or series to see if it can grab my attention and invest me in the story or characters. Rick Riordan has not disappointed me yet.

I really like Rick Riordan's books, starting with Percy Jackson series. I like that he uses mythology and humour in his books. I have always loved mythology and this is a great series to get my sons reading. In fact, it was my oldest son and my sister who got me into Riordan's books.This is the second book of the Kane's Series/Egyptian Mythology. This is written in first person from each sibling's point of view (POV). Each chapter is a different POV. Some writers have a hard time writing different voices for their characters and when they try this the characters sound the same. However, Riordan does a good job of keeping Sadie and Carter's voice distinct.I bought this one to replace the one that disappeared. It has been awhile since I read the Kane Series.

"1776" by master historian David McCullough is a brilliantly conceived and executed book about the origins of the Revolutionary war. The book is not particularly long (by the standards of historical texts, anyway), but is very well documented with an amazing array of sources. I was particularly impressed with the taut prose McCullough used: not only was every message conveyed concisely and with great, meaningful nuance, but the entire editorial manner of the book was brilliant. He seemed to always find the exact right blend of historical recollection, factual data, and personal anecdote. In particular the selection of quotations from personal letters, journals, and diaries was masterful: the quotes always managed to give the reader a true sense of the feeling of the moment.The book is in many ways a chronicle of the "Battle of the Georges," in that both George Washington and King George III are well defined and not pigeonholed into their stereotypical roles of "hero" and "buffoon" respectively. I think that McCullough does a particularly good job of capturing the essence of Washington, especially in the closing months of 1775 and beginning of 1776. He never glosses over Washington's faults or miscalculations (an example being Washington's desire for a frontal assault on Boston in early 1776, in which he was, thankfully, overruled by his Council of War), but equally praises him for his strengths, which were much greater in magnitude and importance.I was glad that McCullough spent so much time on the true struggle for independence, and the despair that Washington and his allies endured at the outset of the war. I didn't previously appreciate the magnitude of the dire straits the Americans were in at that point, and I suspect that most other readers do not either. The use of Washington's private correspondence enormously enhances the horrible conditions in which the war began.The focus on less well-known events also improves the book immensely. I was especially impressed with the account of the siege of Boston and in particular the details of the operation in the Heights of Dorchester. I previously did not have a proper appreciation for the intricate logistical genius of Washington. The incident also serves to illustrate Washington's brilliance for selection of subordinates and ability to delegate, two oft-overlooked yet key attributes of successful General officers.Although this book is not as in-depth as some other (longer) historical accounts available, I think that McCullough penned a superior work to other books on the subject. His ability to phrase every passage perfectly, and his editorial inclinations which enable him to know what to include and what to leave out are second to none. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

As a proud American who, I'm ashamed to admit, knew next to nothing about the details of the Revolutionary War, McCullough's "1776" was a much-needed history lesson for me. Written lucidly and grippingly throughout, "1776" provides a strong foundation for one's study of this most critical period of our nation's history, and has inspired me to continue my own studies by reading as much as I can about the revolution and its meaning, both then and now. One also comes away with a sense of awe toward General (and later President) George Washington. The extensive bibliography that McCullough has provided is more than enough for a lifetime of study.I think that those Americans who read this book will, like me, feel more strongly patriotic and value more greatly the selflessness of those who fought for our country in its infancy. And I think that non-Americans who read it will better understand what it means to be an American, and hopefully see our country in a more favorable light. Yes, I realize that America has its problems, both currently and historically, and that we're certainly not beloved by everyone throughout the world, but it's nonetheless moving to at least try and perceive what we mean when we talk about the "American spirit": that feeling of unbounded liberty that allows us to truly pursue happiness. "1776" offers a path.

After reading six of Mr. McCullough's books, I've come to the conclusion that the author could write an engrossing informative work about even unclogging a toilet. In '1776' he explains how the pivotal year was make-or-break for our rebellious country. The book begins in the summer of 1775 Britain where King George III and Parliament are arguing about the situation in America. Mr. McCullough is exceedingly fair in assessing the people involved on every side of the dispute here and in the United Kingdom. The stakes were high for both sides. Understandably the person at the center of the author's book is General George Washington. '1776' shows why Washington came to epitomize our country's aspirations and really was the only logical choice to be the United States' first president.The book has a generous 32 pages of black-and-white as well as color illustrations. Mr. McCullough demonstrates how weather, lack of intelligence, chance, communication, supplies, recruitment efforts, and luck played important roles in the outcomes. Years ago I read Ender's Game. I loved it so much that I recommend it to my family and coworkers. I still do to this day. I didn't know if anything else could be written into the original source material than had already been done. I was wrong. Orson Scott Card brought so much depth and backstory to the original novel that it enriches the experience of reading it. I will admit to NOT reading any other books by the author, but given the two different series paths, at this point, I would much prefer to follow Bean than Ender's following work. This is definitely going to be added to my recommendation of outstanding novels!

Ender's Game has been on my top five list for over 30 years. I reread this book or listen to the audio book pretty much every year, and there are still nuances that I catch. Orson Scott Card's depiction of the simple reasoning of a child caught my attention when I was still a teen. Having been bullied by an older brother, I saw so many parallels between Peter and my brother.This companion volume takes Bean through the same time period as Ender's Game, from a different character's perspective. With Ender being the "best of the best", it catches you off guard when Bean is much smarter. After Peter threatening Ender with death, you find that Bean's bullies are much more deadly, and have much greater motivation to kill. If you like Ender's Game, then this book is a must read. Its weakest moments are those in which certain key events and circumstances get forced to match up to the original. Probably the most clumsy of these is the story of how Bean got his name. These are minor in comparison to the quality of the story and writing.

This has been one of my most favorite books since I first read it in the 7th grade. The story of kids not just fighting against the threat to humanity, but commanding the entire military makes every young kid feel like they have a chance to do something important. The story line is great, moves along at a good pace, and keeps readers engaged. After 2 or 3 paperback copies got read to pieces, I finally purchased it for Kindle when the last copy bit the dust.15 years later this is still one of my most favorite books. As I have progressed as a reader, I find more and more depth in Card's writing and the book appeals on levels deeper than it did when I was in 7th grade. While still entertaining as it was then, the depth into the characters deepens and the similarities between the story-line and real life resonate with the reader and bring the story to life.I plan to still be reading this book in another 15 years from now.

The book is not a sequel or a prequel to 'Ender's Game'. Instead, it is a fascinating story that runs parallel to the famous novel. It's always interesting to see the same story unfold from different perspectives, and this one gives an account of the story of Bean. Though he seemed like a minor character in the first book, the readers learn of the importance of the character, and just how much the hope of mankind rested on him, only second to Ender. We get to see the origins of Bean, the workings of his mind, and his incredibly accurate analyses of his environment.Card's ability to analyze and calculate various situations and the human mind and behavior is quite uncanny. He finds a balance for these child-soldiers--between their advanced intelligence and childlike mannerisms--to make the story and characters believable. His own analyses of situations woven in the story are also believable, and one marvels at the detail and understanding that Card must possess to complete this particular novel.Though 'Ender's Game' is a complete novel in itself, 'Ender's Shadow' gives a broader view of the entire story. It allows the reader to understand that this fictional world does not revolve solely on Ender, and that in fact, as brilliant as Ender is, he would not have made it without Bean.

As I said in my Ender's Game review, I'm kind of a sci-fi enthusiast. I read the next book in the Ender's Game Series, and finished. I did not want to read the last two. When someone recommendd I read Ender's Shadow, I wasn't very interested. However, after reading another review, I decided to try it... and I'm so glad I did!Not only is it Bean's story, but it takes Bean from before and into Battle School. It's his own perspective of how he deals with Ender. It's a smart, deep, well-written book... and I truely enjoyed it enough thta I read it in 3 days, and immediately downloaded Shadow of the Hegemon!My biggest mistake was finishing right before the movie... with all this extra information on the dymanics of the Game, more information on relationships, and more information on backgrounds and information... it simply make the movie and all it's shortcuts unbearable! However, this is the book that has turned me back onto this series!Apparently Card wrote this book several years after Ender's Game... but it really shows. It's deeper, and fills in gaps... and it's much more emotional! This book is every bit as good as Ender's Game, and in my opinion... I really enjoyed it even more!I highly recommend it!

I had read Ender's game and Ender's shadow each when they were first published. I have re-read Ender's game several times over the years and this is my second reading of shadow. I have thoroughly enjoyed each read! Both Ender and Bean are fascinating characters doing incredible things and it is great fun to share their world and their tribulations as they triumph over them. I want to add that I have read many of the other Orson Scott Card books and they all are highly original and great fun to read and to inter into their worlds.
