About the Author

Hilda Ochoa-Brillembourg, CFA, is the lead founder and chairman of Strategic Investment Group and co-founder of Emerging Markets Management. A Fulbright Fellow and Fulbright Lifetime Achievement awardee, she completed doctoral studies, all but dissertation, in Business Administration in Finance at Harvard Business School and received a Master of Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. Ochoa-Brillembourg served as the Chief Investment Officer at the Pension Investment Division at the World Bank from 1976 to 1987 and continued as a Manager of the World Bank Pension assets until 1996. She is a lifetime member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a member of the American Enterprise Institute Board, the Committee for Economic Development Board, Harvard’s Kennedy School Dean’s Executive Council and Dean’s Alumni Leadership Council, and was a longtime member of the World Economic Forum. In Delivering Alpha, Hilda Ochoa-Brillembourg shares her experiences managing financial assets for several institutional and private clients over a three decade-long career. Structured as a series of topical discussions, the book attempts to answer the question: How should a money management operation be designed and run so as to generate superior investment returns? Ochoa-Brillembourg seems to be well qualified for this task, having produced an enviable level of long-term outperformance in her own company. Indeed, many of her insights involving topics such as asset allocation strategy, trading alternative assets, and firm governance principles are very illuminating. On the other hand, the order of the discussion is repetitive, quite poorly organized (e.g., illiquidity risk is described in a number of chapters), and often superficial, which greatly limits the effectiveness of the project. The biggest impediment, however, is that she has not really made a clear-cut choice in her target audience—the board-level fiduciaries who manage the organization or the investment staff who manages the assets.Indicative of this expositional problem is the very loose way in which the central concept of alpha is defined. Simply put, alpha is the difference between the actual return a portfolio generates and the expected return it should have earned. Since the first term is measurable, calculating alpha really comes down to how expected returns are measured. Economists tend to specify a formal risk model (such as the CAPM) for this purpose, while practitioners typically use the return to a benchmark index (or series of indexes) or the average return generated by a peer group. The main difference between these approaches is that the former measures the risk of the portfolio very precisely—hence the notion that alpha is a risk-adjusted return—but may not represent a directly investable alternative. Conversely, comparing actual returns to those of a benchmark, which is often a viable alternative to the manager being evaluated, does not take investment risk into account explicitly.Unfortunately, both definitions of alpha are used interchangeably throughout the book, which makes it difficult to understand how a portfolio’s outperformance is supposed to be delivered. In fact, the text is largely silent on exactly how someone should design a portfolio to beat expected returns, although there are a few examples of macro-oriented trades the author made in the past to help her firm achieve its results. Essentially, alpha comes from two types of active decisions: tactically adjusting the asset class weights in the portfolio or selecting superior securities within those asset classes. This fact is acknowledged with the following statement near the end of the book: “The divergence between sentiment and fundamentals is the most reliable long-term source of alpha.” However, other than some occasional vague directives that one should consider investing whenever securities are misvalued, Ochoa-Brillembourg never really explains how we might make those assessments.Several other topic discussions are flawed as well; I’ll mention two here. The author begins the book with a consideration of something she calls “fit theory”, which is just of way of saying that investors should consider how any potential new investment will affect an existing portfolio. This is not a new concept and she does not provide enough detail for the reader to implement the rule-of-thumb formula she suggests. (In fact, the high-yield bond example she offers as an illustration is not helpful because the correlation coefficient necessary for the calculation would not have been available at the time of the investment.) Particularly surprising was the extremely limited coverage on the topic of how to select (or terminate) the outside managers who are responsible for actually investing the asset class-specific portfolios. This is crucial because for an institution that follows the “external manager” model, all of the alpha delivered by security selection will come from these outside agents. Despite stressing that her firm was a pioneer of what is by now an industry-standard approach, the author devotes just two very brief chapters (i.e., about five pages each) to this essential subject.Of course, Delivering Alpha also contains a lot of good information, even if those discussions are not necessarily integrated into a cohesive whole. Notable among these topics are the process for creating an investment policy statement, how to manage portfolio volatility, responsible employee compensation arrangements, and a company’s organization and culture. The problem, though, is that these insights appear somewhat randomly and they are often interspersed with other points that are either misplaced, redundant, or far too terse to be useful. Perhaps the best way to assess this volume’s potential impact is as follows: If you handed the book to both a trustee and a staff member at an institutional investment firm, would either find a sufficient amount of information to execute their fiduciary duties effectively (to say nothing of producing superior investment performance)? Sadly, I think that the answer to that question is very likely “no”. As such, despite containing many thought-provoking points, the work ultimately falls short of its intended goal.

“Delivering ALPHA” is not a book on finance theory but about the methods utilized by the author, Hilda Ochoa-Brillembourg, to deliver Alpha for decades, while Chief Investment Officer at the World Bank and, later, as CEO of her own firm. In the words of the author is “a practical guide to building intelligent, sensible, and sensibly managed portfolios that will deliver Alpha consistently over time”.This highly specialized subject would limit the reading of the book to financial experts, right? Wrong. Even the non-experts can enjoy this book because it also happens to be a guide on how to live sensibly. The lessons learned by Ochoa-Brillembourg in her World Bank career and, later, in running her company, have direct and evident application to the manner we choose to live our lives. The first one of these lessons says: Price is not value. In finance as in life there is a market price which is the same to all buyers but value is different to different buyers, being a function of its synergistic value when combined with your financial or human portfolio. The author tells us: “The largest factor influencing such value, other than price, expected return and risk, is the correlation of the asset to the rest of your portfolio”. This leads to the Fit Theory, according to which not only the price and intrinsic value of the asset are pertinent to our choice but equally important is the fit to our own needs and circumstances.Although the book is primarily written with the large investors in mind it can also be of great help to the small investors. I was particularly interested in her discussion on the Wisdom of Teams and Governing for Success, the product of her extensive experience in managing investment committees.One of the most important policy decisions the author contributed to her stay at the World Bank was the addition of junk bonds to the portfolio of the institution and how this decision contributed to delivering Alpha.There is much in this superbly written book which makes for compelling reading for all readers hoping to get a better grip on the subject.

This book is not a textbook or cookbook for institutional investors and fiduciaries but a highly readable compendium of investment wisdom gleaned during many years of overseeing pension, endowment, and foundation assets. Hilda Ochoa-Brillembourg shares her unique insights on a very wide array of subjects, such as practical advice on the advantages and limitations of various investment strategies, how to construct a diversified portfolio that can withstand market crises, and how improve the decision-making of investment committees. An interesting and enjoyable read. But it needs a proof read. I'm 95 pages into the book so far and have found at least 3 glaring mistakes so far that anyone knowledgeable in astronomy should have caught. On page 86 it's stated that the planet Uranus is 30 AU distance from the sun. In Reality Uranus is around 19 AU and Neptune is at 30 AU. On page 91 is states that the Apollo missions gave us the 1st opportunity to see earth from 240 million miles. Actually that would have been 240 thousand miles. A 3rd one I found earlier but forgot to bookmark. Because of these I gave it a 4 star rating.

This is definitely a great introduction to genetics. It covers every aspect in this field such as the Mendel's Rules, why we have different blood types, Punnet tables, dominant and recessive genes, the role of mutations, the production of proteins using bacteria and genetically modified animals that are proteins factories for Human use, such as insuline, and much more. I thought I had a decent knowledge of genetics but now I feel more confident about it and this book really provide the right knowledge to be up-to-date in this fascinating and complex topic.

Well written and entertaining. Perfect for those who love science but aren't scientists. I learned a lot about this very interesting subject. We humans think we're so special but in the big picture the term insignificant comes to mind.

I picked up this book after taking an online course (intro to astronomy) taught by the author. If you are interested to learn about near complete catalog of unmaned missions, and what we have learned from each, I would recommend a purchase. The author does a great job of using everyday language to explain some pretty high level concepts.

This was a very informative book, it contained detailed information on many different areas. The one issue that i have, was that the tables were very small and i could no effectively zoom in on them on my kindle. but it was an overall great book

My dad has always been kind of an amateur naturalist, and he has recently been reading several of the various books by Richard Dawkins. As a biochemist working in the biotech industry, I have always encouraged him to read a little bit about molecular biology and genetics, field which I believe are important to learn about in order to gain a more complete understanding of how life really works. Recently, he asked me if I could recomend a good book on the subject of genetics. I found this quest not particularly easy. There are many excellent textbooks on genetics out there, but these are not really what I would call "armchair reading." Of course any college general biology textbook will have an excellent discussion of genetics and molecular biology - but again, too hard-core. One excellent book on genetics is the "Cartoon Guide to Genetics" by Larry Gonick and Mark Wheelis, but this book was written in 1991 and is now hopelessly out of date for this rapidly advancing field. Then there is "Genetics for Dummies," but I thought the title of this book would be a bit insulting potentially. Anyway - I came across this book by Charlotte Omoto and Paul F. Lurquin. I would encourage anyone interesting in biology and genetics to pick up a copy of this extremely well-written little book. I think this book is absolutely perfect. It starts out with a short introduction on the history of the discovery of DNA, then goes into an introduction to basic genetics concepts, such as the use of the Punnett square predict genetic outcomes, recessive vs. dominant traits, sex-linked traits, etc. It gives lots of very nice examples of Mendalian traits in humans. In chapter 4, there is a very nice discussion of the molecular biology of genetics - which is such a beautiful theory that it is a shame that most people don't know much about it. Chapter 5 goes into the use of bacteria to make human proteins - an extremely important part of modern molecular biology research. Chapter 6 has a discussion about genetically modified foods. Chapters 7,8, and 9 discuss chromosomal abnormalities, mutations, and recombination - which is all very important for an understanding of human (and non-human) genetics. Chapter 10 is my favorite - it gives a very well written description of the Hardy-Weinberg theory of how genes propogate in a population. This is all tied in with the theory of evolution in chapter 11. Chapters 12 and 13 then go into newsworthy topics such as nature-vs-nurture and human cloning. All in all, it is a very well written book which everyone should read. My only criticism is that the figures are not as good as they could be. The authors need to hire a good artist to help them with the next edition! I think they're clear enough, but they could have been made a lot nicer. Still - I give the book a five star rating.Dave

First, I'll say everyone has different taste, so you may like this book a lot but this is my first impression. You know the old saying, "Don't judge a book by it's cover"? Well it can be true. This coloring book has a beautiful cover but the inside of the Kindle version is a letdown. The pretty horse on the cover isn't in there and the pictures are mostly animal faces. And the patterns in the design of the animals didn't really impress me. Again, nothing like the horse on the cover at all. The worst part though, is that this Kindle "book" isn't really. It doesn't seem like theres an option to print it (maybe if you have a printer sharing option set up?) so it's only good for a preview. It would be nice to have known that, because there's not much you can do with this. Apparantly the whole purpose of this even existing is to push the Coloring Therapist club, where you can sign up to download actual printable photos. And it's not advertised in what I would consider a classy or legitimate seeming way. The whole thing feels like a bait-and-switch. There are a few pages of the JOIN NOW club stuff at the beginning of the book.Unfortunately I can't recommend this, it's not really worth the download...unless you find that it can be printed and you like the pictures enough. Maybe the print book is good. But considering the coloring books like these I've seen at Dollar Tree, I can't see myself paying over $6 to buy the print version of this when what you can see in the Kindle version of this book doesn't really impress.

This book is an exact copy of the print version except for a few pages at the beginning where the publisher pushes a free coloring club. In order to receive the promised "10+ high quality coloring book PDF pages with dozens of illustrations that readers can PRINT," you have to sign up on a free mailing list. The description of the book does NOT state this fact, and I think that it should.The coloring pages in the book are fine, I have seen better, but some are very good. I still wish I didn't have to sign up for a mailing list in order to get their promised free coloring pages. There are thousands available for free online that don't require I turn over private, personal information to this publisher.I received this product at a discount in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. Before 'purchasing', I thought that this would be a full digital copy of the coloring book but it's only a small selection. It's a limited preview of images that could be in the actual coloring book but I'm not convinced they are necessarily included though. You receive a digital kindle version that contains 13 pages of into/ads/index and then 14 pages of images. Although I do not know how you'd go about actually coloring any of the 14 images included in the preview. There isn't a print button in my kindle app or an option to download the designs that I can figure out. I guess I could take a screen shot and then try to print that out. But it would be quite fuzzy and hard to color in.There is the option to follow a link to the website to download other images which you can then print out and color. The thing is, after giving your name and email address, you're able to download images from 6 different books. But this one isn't one of them, although images from this "preview" are included in some of those books... so I'm really just confused.The "Look Inside" preview before you buy feature is a waste of time. It does not show any actual images from the book which is a let down. I fail to understand the point of even including that feature with this item's information since it provides no insight into the actual "coloring book". It will not show you what you are buying.The images are very cute and the ostrich makes me smile every time! BUT I feel like I'm seeing the same ones over and over from this company. Most of the designs look to be too intricate and detailed to be able to color in though. It's definitely for adults. I wouldn't recommend this one for children. Overall, it's an okay "preview" of a "coloring book". I'd still probably recommend just finding some free coloring pages online that you can print out. As a recent inductee to Mage: The Awakening, I was ready and eager to get my hands on anything that would help me understand the world around me. I was however very unsure where to begin so I asked around and my sources told me to invest in the Silver Ladder book for an idea on what my order was all about. This item not only has the back history of the Silver Ladder but also what they are hoping to currently accomplish and what their aims for the future are. There are also order specific legacies in the back and information about helpful spells for each of the clans who are part of the Silver Ladder and even notes about artifacts. Overall I would recommend this book for beginners especially but also for older members who want to enhance their character in the area of their order.

Finally, after waiting this long we have the fifth of the Order books detailing the 'leader' faction for Mage: the Awakening. And it's about time! As with the other Order books, this one serves to flesh out the Silver Ladder, who seek to ultimately guide humanity to the powers that are their birthright. As opposed to the other Orders, the Silver Ladder (at its best) believes magic is inherent to humanity. Wonderfully, it expands them beyond their stereotype of 'leaders' and emphasizes their heritage as priests, viziers and philosophers of the Awakened, giving players and STs alike lots of new possibilities for using this Order.The book opens with the history of the Silver Ladder, from their early days as the philosopher-priests of Atlantis and the Five Kings who (they claim) established the Paths, to their embrace of the British Empire during the age of colonialism. From there, it goes on to explore the role of the Silver Ladder in different corners of the world, from businessmen in Brazil to progressive Muslims in the Middle East to humanitarian aid in Africa. The second chapter explores the beliefs and practices of the Silver Ladder, including the Elemental Precepts, their political structure, magical law, roles and status within the Order, and Path roles. It also explores the Silver Ladders relations with other Mages and, more importantly, mortals! Better, it includes rules for Cryptolopolies (secret societies under the Order's influence), new Proximi rules, and even Sivler Dynasties (entire families of Proximi!).In chapter three, we are given information about the Silver Ladder's recruitment, initiation and even conversion of other Mages, including the tests and lessons that neophytes must learn. In addition to some more info on Proximi, we also get more detailed looks at Status within the Silver Ladder, members relationships to their community and fellow Mages, and more specifics on the other Orders. This chapter also looks at the other things that lurk in the World of Darkness... Vampires, Werewolves, Changelings, even Prometheans and Hunters, with details for incorporating them in chronicles as either enemies or allies. It also includes some very nice details on what Mages know (and THINK they know) about other supernaturals.The next chapter gets into factions like the Powerbrokers (self-descriptive), Theurges (religious Thearchs) and Ascended (who dedicate themselves to Ascension), as well as sample Cryptolopoly cults used by the Silver Ladder. Then there are Legacies... lots of them, ranging from the Bene Ashmedai (another Legacy of Mastigos demonologists, opposeed to the Clavicularus), Keepers of the Covenant (Thyrsus who uphold deals with spirits), Sisterhood of the Blessed (Acanthus women blessed with good luck), and even a new Left-Handed Legacy. This is all good stuff leading up to the magic of the Silver Ladder, which includes details on the Arcana, Rote Specialties, sacraments used by the Order, and a whole host of new Spells and Imbued Items (some of which are a bit over the top, but what the hey). Finally, we get an appendix full of NPCs, which can be used in just about any chrocicle featuring the Silver Ladder, or as concepts for creating your own characters.All in all, this book follows the tradition of the previous Order books. While it isn't nearly as groundbreaking as some of the others, its still a great book for fleshing out and expanding the Silver Ladder beyond the stereotypes. Furthermore, the details on Mage political and legal structure will be useful for any Mage games, not just those involving the Silver Ladder. The same can be said of the new (and expanded) rules for Proximi (and Proximi Dynasties) and the Lex Magica. Those alone will make it essential for any Mage games. But the rest of the material is just as good too, and will no doubt give you some ideas for your next Mage: the Awakening chronicle...

A beautifully packaged, well detailed book of two of my favorite director's films. I look forward to many hours of reading pleasure and recollection. Thank you, Coen brothers. Thank you Ian Nathan!

I love reading and will nearly always pick reading over watching. Therefore when I do watch something I’m very selective that said I’ve seen everything the Coen brothers have done.For me this book was an informative look into their lives and how they started down this road. I’m not saying there’s much here for diehard fans or people looking for a more in-depth look. But for a fan of their films who previously knew very little about them I found it interesting.I discovered how they started a lawn mowing business to earn the $400 required to buy Vivatar super-8. And their film making career was launched.There’s some lovely pictures and quotes and as a huge fan of their films I really enjoyed it. Talking of their films I’ve been trying to narrow the list and pick my favourite but I’ve decided it’s an impossible task.I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Aurum Press.

The Coen Brothers by Ian Nathan is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late January.Being a fan and fellow Minnesotan, I was excited for this book, its photography, and perhaps gentle analysis of the Coen Brothers' films, but I draw a thick, wary line at Nathan insinuating that St Louis Park (once referred to a St Louis when talking about their junior high school) is 'nearby' Brainerd when they're at least 120 miles apart, uneven syntax (particularly straight-up sentences inside of parentheses if something is vaguely apropos), and hit or miss photos (off-topic, on-topic, or not appearing at all). So, yeah, a kind gesture and respectful toward these filmmakers, but frustrating.

I enjoyed reading this book about one of my favorite director/writers. The book chronologically presents the Coen Brothers from their beginnings in Minnesota to their latest movie. I really enjoyed many of the behind the scenes stories. The text includes a lot of wonderful photographs. Anyone who loves movies will enjoy this book.

Before I even opened this book I was in love with the cover! It will be going on my shelf facing out so I can look at it. It comes in a slip cover box. Then....it gets better...the quotes! A page turner of quotes along with the photos are simply fabulous. A great resource of all their work.

When people ask me what my favorite movies are, I list off directors instead...and the Coen Brothers are at the top of my list. I have seen every one of their movies multiple times. They are brilliant writers and directors in my opinion and if they are involved in a film then they can have all my movie-watching money.The Coen Brothers: The iconic filmmakers and their work is a self-explanatory title that tells you exactly what you're going to get when you open the cover. It offers a biography of Joel and Ethan Coen, shares insight into family dynamics, covers pretty much all of their movies in chronological order, summarizes the storylines, talks about the inspirations - how the setting or events relate to real-life experiences, discusses the importance of particular scenes, incorporates reasoning behind actor choices, gives a look inside the business of filmmaking, and so forth. Overall, this book shed new light on the various films which I wholeheartedly appreciated. I suppose you can spend a few hours researching this information on your own but the author has already organized all of it in this one place with vibrant photographs on almost every page to serve as visual aids. The result is a very deserving centerpiece for any fan's coffee table or bookshelf.As I write this review, Christmastime is closing in and although the appropriate activities are listening to seasonal music, baking cookies, and wrapping gifts, all I can think about right now is watching some sort of overcomplication of humanity's flaws and all the blood-soaked Minnesota evil I can muster. "Comedy flows from the horror, the horror bleeds out of the comedy." ...and another Coen Brothers' marathon is my present to myself. I’ve been a fan of the Coen brothers since watching Blood Simple many years ago, indeed I loved the film so much that I pestered the guy in my local video store to give me the poster off his wall. Ian Nathan follows their career from their early Super 8 movies right up to present day and has sound bites from people closest to them. A good book that has some great behind the scenes info and tries to get behind what makes the brothers tick.
