I love reading these comedienne's books that give you a sneak peak into what happens behind the scenes. Kaling was a writer on SNL and The Office. I really liked all the industry stories, but that's not all Kaling has to offer.Kaling's wit is strong in this book. I love her snappy comments. Since I listened to the audiobook, Kaling really added her own personality to her written words.I probably knew the least about Kaling than other comediennes I've read recently. I enjoyed learning of how she got into the industry. It made me google a lot of her earlier things and now I want to catch up on The Mindy Project.I give this audiobook a 4/5. It is a great addition to the wonderful comedy books by awesome current comediennes out there.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? was such a joy to read. I devoured this book in two sittings. And it wasn’t just one long joke either. There was some real substance to her writing. A lot of legitimately laugh out loud funny moments, but other more deeper moments too. With the turn of each page, you see Mindy grow and mature. Her writing is raw and honest. You feel like you’re sitting down with Mindy over a cup of coffee and something sweet (although, of course, not a cupcake; she doesn’t eat those anymore). I think every woman at any age could find something to relate to within these pages. And I think that’s a real testament to not only the quality of the writing, but also as to the quality of the author herself. The book wasn’t perfect and there were a few moments that were a little slower than others, but she still deserved five stars. It was evident she poured out all of herself into this book. And that’s something you don’t always get. Mindy you have a life-long fan in me!

Heck no, Mindy Kaling is my spirit animal.I wouldn’t go so far to say this book in hilarious. I don’t think that was her goal in writing this book. Just like as a performer or comedian we’re not meant to be performing monkeys ‘on’ all the time just for your enjoyment. It was like sitting down on the lounge floor in you pj’s and having a gasbag with your girlfriends.I love how the structure was broken up into flashbacks, lists, stories and comments on pictures… it really was like how evenings go with my girlfriends, clutching a glass of bubbly reminiscing and making each other cackle until we snort.I did want it to be funnier though. Or more engaging. But I understand in doing so it would have either been too serious, or too silly. This that the right amount of everything to kick back and relax, and to just enjoy reading. I appreciate how Mindy simply blurts out what’s on her mind. It’s finding a voice for much of my internal dialogue; and whether she intended the book to be like this or not, after reading it, I felt that if we were to run into each other at a party would become fast friends. And that is a great tone to have of a memoir. Masterfully done.So many hot key topics discussed without being pretentious. I recommend this to anyone who loves memoirs, or just loves being a girl.

I bought this ebook on Kindle quite a while back when it was on sale. I have no idea why it took me so long to read it. It's freaking hilarious from start to finish. If I could rate it more than 5 stars, I would. Being a huge fan of The Office, I knew who Mindy Kaling was, but I'll admit I'd not watched her in much else. I don't really watch TV. Or, I should say, the only television I watch are shows I already know and love and then I'll stream a season at a time on Netflix or Prime. I am now a huge Kaling fan. This book reads like a really long email between me and one of my BFF's. LOL. I read 90% of it in one sitting and only stopped because I needed at least a solid two hours of sleep before going into work. Definitely intending on reading her follow-up book. I think I highlighted about a quarter of this book... a true record for me. My first highlight is from page 4, during the introduction."However, you should know I disagree with a lot of traditional advice. For instance, they say the best revenge is living well. I say it's acid in the face-who will love them now?"In fact, I even highlighted an entire chapter, the one entitled: Guys Need to Do Almost Nothing to Be Great. I laughed the whole way through the chapter. I'm quite sure my family thought my fragile mental state was hanging in the balance as I cackled like a fiend reading this on my Kindle.FIVE STARS!

If you want me to tell you all about Sleater-Kinney, Riot Grrrl, and Portlandia...I can't. I know nothing about any of these topics. I know that S-K were a band (and are, as they've reformed), and I have heard the term "Riot Grrrl" thrown around in books about music in the Nineties. And Portlandia is some show that I've heard of only in passing. So maybe I'm not the ideal audience for this book...but then again, maybe I am."Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl," by Carrie Brownstein, was the subject of a review on the Onion's AV Club that I came across recently. The review piqued my interest in a book written, admittedly, by a musician whose work was (and still is) unknown to me. In much the same way that I let curiosity steer me towards Questlove's memoir without really knowing much about the Roots, I found myself interested in reading this book even though I was in the dark about Sleater-Kinney or Brownstein's other endeavors.For a non-fan, this is actually a really interesting, enjoyable book. The subject is not so much Brownstein's life (though it is the main thrust of it) as it is creativity, and her search for artistic fulfillment and meaning. Having a voice, having something to say, is the noblest reason to pursue artistic success, and Brownstein shows that she found that voice and that message through her work inside and outside of music. She shines a light on the music scene in the Northwest circa 1992, when Nirvana was hitting big and any band with a Seattle zip code and a wardrobe of flannel could find success (even though S-K, according to her, always remained on the margins of commercial success, they did find a rabid fan base that exists to this day). She also addresses the sexism that rock music has ingrained within it (reading some of the reviews S-K got that she includes in the book is cringe-worthy, even from the journalists who meant well). This memoir might be written for the S-K fan, but even non-fans like me can find their way through without too much of a map to navigate the various ups and downs of the band's history.I may not be the go-to guy on Sleater-Kinney or Carrie Brownstein's other projects, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy her memoir. And I will likely be checking out S-K in the near future.

Without seeing Carrie Brownstein on a television talk show, I can guarantee my Kindle library list would never included "Hunger Makes Me a Modern Woman:A Memoir." However, seeing her guest appearance on theLate Night Show with Stephen Colbert revealed Brownstein as an intelligent, funny, articulate woman that I wanted to know more about. I am not a musician; I detest punk rock; know very little about the girl bands and the indie musical movement in the Northwest begun in the 1990s. Sure, I was familiar with the names Nirvana and Kurt Cobain, but that was the extent of my knowledge about the world of Carrie Brownstein, guitarist for the all-girl band Sleater-Kinney. I had never even heard of a band by that name, or the many other bands she mentions throughout her book. However, as I read this memoir, I became impressed and fascinated by her vocabulary and use of language. As a reader I connected more with her sharing herself as an avid reader, her disfunctional home life, and her deep introspection as she searched to understand herself: where she had been and where she was going. The string of evidently "well-known" bands and individual artists within this genre meant nothing to me. Yet, I found her word smithing compelling and most intriguing. For that reason, this book is worth reading. I never glimpsed the total woman I saw on the talk show, but saw glimmers of her here and there. The work certainly burst my stereotypical vision of punk rockers and busting stereotypes is always a good thing. I would love to see Brownstein pursue a literary career; if her use of language could keep me reading through all the material in this book that completely disinterested me, just imagine how enjoyable she could make a good fictional story!

I've been a fan of Sleater-Kinney since I first heard them in 1995, and wrote rave reviews of most of their albums through their career. My admiration for Carrie Brownstein has continued to grow as she explored side projects, blog writing, and of course blossomed into a sketch comedy genius with Fred Armisen in Portlandia.Those wanting a detailed account of how she got into music and who her influences are (Richard Baluyut of Versus and Christina Billotte of Slant 6) won't be disappointed. She explains why they picked the name Sleater-Kinney, which sounds like a law firm or a hospital. "But in the moniker could be whatever we wanted it to be. It could embody whatever and whoever we were."Yet in her memoir, she doesn't readily spill all the goods. Meaning, she still holds some cards close to her chest, reluctant to share all of her private matters. That's her right, but I feel putting "memoir" in the title is a bit of a misrepresentation, as it's pretty much exclusively about the band. Yes, she discusses her relationship with bandmate Corin Tucker in the early days and their breakup. She touches on her family history, her father's absence and belated coming out years later. Her being unceremoniously outed in a major music publication. I've always admired how Brownstein's demeanor navigated a wobbly balance between an awkward, gangly young woman and a strutting, badass gender neutral guitar hero. Yet she never actually discusses whether she's gay, bi or gender fluid, and does not talk about any relationships after Tucker. "Here's my memoir, but my life is none of your damn business." Okay, so Carrie is all business all the time it appears. She also talks about dealing with frequent panic attacks, but we never find out what the cause is, if she ever got a handle on it, or anything. So many questions unanswered.Apparently everything worked out, at least as far as Sleater Kinney had a trimphant reunion, album and tour, she wrote a book, and had several successful seasons with Portlandia. However not a word is mentioned about the show, nor of Fred. Not a single word. I don't know if Fred didn't want to be included, or she's saving it for her next book, but I feel slightly cheated. Nevertheless, Carrie is awesome, so I don't have the heart to dock more than one star.

He’s big, and mean, and he wants what he wants. He’s been in prison for years, thinking about getting out and getting to HER.2. Ex-Con.Yes, please. There is something about a criminal that gets my blood flowing. Two examples come to mind: Lady Luck by Kristen Ashley (Duh!) and Prisoner by Skye Warren & Annika Martin.He is just so RAW. And unleashed. And he likes it d*rty.3. D*rty Talk.It’s my #1, y’all! And oh man. This book has the best d*rty talk.4. “Daddy.”I openly and unashamedly admit that I am a fan of the “Daddy” talk. Disclaimer: If you’re not a fan, then this book isn’t for you. From the readers I’ve talked to, it’s either you love it or hate it….AND I LOVE IT!!! It isn’t the central theme of this book, but it is said several times.Will I read this book a million times?! You bet I will!

This little story is about a recently released, bulldog faced convict, built like an ogre who takes a young (but not too young) beauty hostage to get back at her brother for some reason or another (but mostly it's the sex wants, if you're wondering).She's pretty cool with it. Guess she likes monstrous men who take what they want. Hey, we all have our things . . .This is "ravage me, I love it" soft porn. My brain was tired and I needed something slightly offensive and silly to take my mind off my real life woes and this one did the trick.Sorta recommended, I guess?

Delilah is a young girl trying to find her way through the forest of life. Raider is a beast of a man who has only known brutality and shame for how he looks and how people perceive him at first glance.When Beauty and Beast meet it takes Delilah a minute to see the beauty in Raider but once she does there is no going back for them!This was a cute story! I love how the author takes these ultra alpha males and make them fall at the feet of the petite but strong females. I'm so glad to finally read another book by Jessa Kane! It was definitely worth the wait! I absolutely loved her dirty take on Beauty and the Beast!!Raider was So possessive and hot in his own way! His sweet, loving side sold me on him. I also loved that Delilah could see past his rough exterior. All in all, it was as short, steaming hot read and I can't wait to see more from this author!! Trust me and read this book!!!

If you like your romance with a HOT touch, this this read is for you. Raider is an ex-con on the trail of getting his money back from a punk who left him to take the fall for a crime they both committed. What he didn't count on was the sweet Delilah all grown up and looking good. This is almost a Beauty and Beast kind of story but surprisingly I thought it very sweet but very very sexy. If you like your read as good as a quickie in the sheets, or van, or bar table, you'll like "Pound of Flesh" by Ms. Jessa Kane.

Smoking hot, fabulous characters and a nod to Beauty and the Beast. Delilah is a sweet, young responsible woman that Raider fell for when she was 15 (no worries, no underage sexual interactions happen). Raider is huge, scarred and served time to keep Delilah safe. This is a quick read, the characters are great and the writing is fabulous. I enjoyed the insta-love version of Beauty of the Beast a great deal. Throw in some Daddy talk and you've got a fabulous book by Jessa Kane!

When Raider finally gets out of prison he goes for the one thing he's worked so hard to care for, the one thing that he loves, and the one thing that he would do anything for.... Delilah!Delilah works hard to help her brother out around the house. For so long it's only been the two of them. Until one day the most massive and equally handsome man she's ever seen shows up.. Raider. And takes her.A juicy short read that leaves you wanting a Raider of your own.

This is such a great read. I think the storyline is fresh and as always the writing is great. I loved the fact that even though Raider was a big bad beast to everyone else he was a complete push over for Delilah. I also love the fact that Delilah was smart enough to see past her beasts tough exterior and into his heart. You will not be disappointed with this book. My only regret is that it ended too soon. Though I'm happy with Jessa Kane for knocking it out of the park once again.

Highly recommended for anyone new to this kind of photography.

This book is great for photographers just starting out in the sometimes complicated field of concert photography trying to figure out what camera to buy, lenses to use, etc but is also great for seasoned concert photographers, as there is some great information about how to get access to concerts and to grow your portfolio, based on his years of experience shooting some very big names. I've been shooting for more years than I'd like to remember and I still picked up quite a few tips in this book!

The Beginners Guide To Photography is an excellent book to implement your concert photography career. This book is a condensed resource of knowledge and proven steps to help guide you as you embark upon a career in concert photography. The most valuable strategy I have gleaned and practiced from the book is shooting in small clubs to gain access. I would highly recommend this book!

Matthias does a great job of explaining in a simple way how to get started in concert photography. Their is not a lot of information out there on this topic so this book is a great help. The information he gives for the price is unmatched. Truly a great read for any kind of low light situation photography.

This book covered some of my favorite albums such as Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and The Eagles "Hotel California". You really felt like a fly on the wall when these albums were being made. A fun "airplane" read for all you classic rockers out there!!

This was great. I especially liked reading about the bands I grew up with and I also liked reading about how the music made then still gets played today.

Really good. Interesting stories you'll tell your friends about over beers, and annoy them cause you just keep going because there are so many good stories.

This book centers on the studios, the producers, and their interaction with the musical artists themselves to produce the hits that still resonate with us.The episodic writing is distracting, but the material presented is fascinating. This book is a worthy sequel to Hartman's The Wrecking Crew: The Inside Story of Rock and Roll's Best-Kept Secret Recommended for serious music fans.

I enjoyed Kent Hartman's book about the Wrecking Crew. This one is also enjoyable. Those who are young enough to not remember the days before digital music may find this to be an entertaining look back to when vinyl was king and everyone seemed to have a favorite record store.
