Although the book is very technical and some people might find it complicated I found it interesting. What happened to Scott Dominguez should never have happened. It's tragic and horrible. I can't understand a law that doesn't allow him to be awarded any compensation to help with his medical bills and continuing care. That should be changed. Why should victims of environmental crimes be treated differently than victims of other crimes. I am glad Elias went to jail but it wasn't for nearly long enough. He should serve for as many years as Scott has to live with his disabilities. I was touched by his story and wonder how he is doing. I pray that he is able to find some peace and happiness in his life. What happened to him matters and the telling of his story was important for us to hear. It should never have happened but since it did it's important that we heard about it.As for Robert Dugoni, I've read all of his other books. He is one of my favourite authors. Although this book is very different than his others, I am glad I read it. It brought me to tears in many places. I couldn't put it down. He made everyone so real to me. I appreciated that he put the notes in about where they are now. I don't think I will ever forget Scott and what happened to him. I wonder how he is doing now. I believe that is an indication of a well written book. When the people stay with you long after you put the book down. Thank you for bringing something so important to our attention and doing it so well.
I received a free advance review e-copy of this book and have chosen of my own free will to post a review. ‘The Cyanide Canary’ is very well written and a true real life environmental drama. Couldn’t put it down. This is a story of a young man who nearly dies and suffers severe brain damage for the rest of his life due to the negligence and poor safety practices of the owner of the company. It is tragic and unconscionable. What a long and arduous legal process to enforce environmental law with denials, cover-ups, twists, turns, etc. Robert Dugoni does a great job of writing a book that is easy to follow and readable in everyday language so that anyone can understand the workings of the EPA and what really happened here. I like his style. This is a book that everyone should read.
In writing this gripping documentary of a landmark case in the history of the EPA, the authors have done a service that, in my opinion, is comparable to the original event. It should be read by every thinking American, whether they support environmental regulation or not. Constructing this narrative was in itself a monumental task. And it puts in stark relief the difficulties faced by those who would try to protect our citizens from even the worst environmental criminals. It is also a highly compelling story. I couldn't put it down.
Fantastic story that I could not put down. Told quite objectively and very well documented, it somehow managed to fill its pages with emotional content as well, making one feel that you were there....in the courtroom, in Scott,s family home, and in the field. An amazing cast of folks from all walks of life are kept well sorted and described until you feel you know them (i.e. Stay with it thru the first few chapters). Twists and turns throughout. But most of all, this legal thriller provides deep insight into the history of a key case that illustrates the challenges faced by the US government agencies and courts that cope with one of the most difficult issues of our time: environmental crimes.
This book makes my blood boil. It is an eye opener on an environmental crime. The man who was responsible is just one of so many environmental criminals. It makes you wonder how many others are out there who never get caught or just get a slap on the wrist and go back to business as usual. It is also no wonder that there are so many sick people stricken with cancer and other diseases that could possibly be traced back to exposure from [these crimes]. They are destroying our planet. It is truly frightening. It also gives me insight on why FIVE of my immediate family members have been stricken with cancer, and that’s just the side of my family that I know about. You should read this book. Now I understand the mentality of “ tree huggersâ€
The Cyanide Canary is a tough, non-fiction account of actual industrial practices and why we need the EPA. It is reported in an interesting way, however. Although there are times it is hard to read, there are many more times the reader is deeply into what is going on, thanks to the writing of Bob Dugoni.When a young man is severely damaged by cyanide gas in his work environment, the EPA agents become actively involved in discovering who made what decisions and why they tried to cover it up. When the case carries sufficient weight to lay charges and take the owner to court, they still have a tough fight with defense attorneys who specialize in that kind of work, undermining witnesses for the prosecution, even those who were nearly killed on the job. Joseph Hilldorfer worked with the EPA from beginning to end of this long but vitally important case, co-authoring The Cyanide Canary.The course of this case runs years, and I wouldn't have missed this story for anything because now I know the importance of monitoring industry from what actually HAS happened to real people. It isn't just theory or opinion. Reading this book should be required in several university courses, starting with those about the environment, some about big industry where bucks count more than human lives, etc.
Loved reading this as I have worked as an environmental professional for my entire career. I worked for several years on the EPA Technical Assistance Team contract providing emergency response and site investigation for hazardous waste sites. During those years I have had the opportunity to work closely with the EPA CID and USCG Strike Team on criminal investigations and response to illegal use and disposal of hazardous waste. These folks are extremely dedicated and some of the most intelligent folks that I have worked with in my career. So glad to see this book shine the spotlight on their service in protecting the public and the environment.
