A Santero recommended this book to me because I have recently become interested in the Religion. It's a great starter. It has a lot of information on the very clandestine practices of the religion. It teaches a lot about the orishas, initiation ceremonies, and the history of the religion. Gonzalez-Wippler also includes some VERY interesting anecdotes.... I would recommend reading the book just for these anecdotes. Still, the book definitely contains some misinformation.The author even admits that, when writing other books (and earlier versions of this book), the initiates from whom she sought information, told her lies so that outsiders would not be let in on the very private practices of the religion. I feel that that might still be true for this book. I was even more suspicious about the accuracy of this book because, in her discussion of Brazilian candomblé, she misspelled nearly all of the terms she used. How can you trust that her information is accurate when she didn't even care to get the correct spelling of the words?Still, it is a good read. Well written, with good information. I definitely wouldn't use it for any academic work, or as the go-to source for information on Santería. Definitely buy it, but do a lot of other research.

This book provides an overview into the traditional Santeria religion in the Caribbean. It is somewhat informative and what it is sorely missing is some sort of cohesion. The information seems scattered at times and the writing is lacking. There are not sufficient sources to support the book and it should only be used as a point of reference but not as the sole one.

The book is much thicker than I expected! Great for the price! Haven't read it yet though; will get to that in an edit once I crack it

I really enjoyed this. There is a lot of personal experience and anecdotal information. Very approachable for any understanding level.

Some would find this a religion of fear. It opened my eye. I love to learn about different religions. I was surprised to find this was the authors 3rd attempt. He is a very humble and respectable author. If you are curious and tired of not knowing what this religion entails. Get a good read in. I learned quite a bit.

Years ago I purchased the paperback version of this book and loved it. I recently purchased another book she published through Kindle. I had to have them both. She is a teacher as well as an author. Her writing is very educational yet on point. I appreciate her attention to detail and her respect for and knowledge of the cultures she writes about.

No "cure" is given or even implied. The advice is simple,if you have or suspect hearing loss,see your doctor or an audiologist. If aspirin or other analgesics are the cause,stop taking them,if it's loud noise or music, avoid it.A total waste of time and money.

TOO SHORT AND NO CURE OR SOLUTIONS AT ALL THE WAY THEY SAID IT MIGHT AS WELL BE AN ARTICLE IN A MAGAZINE OR NEWSPAPER THAN A BOOK FOR 3 DOLLARS IT WAS A RIPOFF!

I have just experienced sudden hearing loss in my left ear. I was very excited to find this book as its sub-title was "The ultimate guide on How to improve and restore your hearing naturally." In the introduction the book states that "This guide will provide you with exercises, tips, and various tricks to assist you to improve, as well as restore your hearing."I was very disappointed in the material. I don't normally write reviews (this is my first ever), but I had to make an exception in this case. It took me about 15 minutes to finish this book and the information presented was of the most rudimentary nature. I didn't find one Exercise, tip or trick to assist me in improving my hearing. Very disappointing!

Promises, promises, yet nothing new told. Big mistake in buying it, my hopes for help down the drain.There is just no help!!

This whole book is just standard doctor's advice. I didn't notice any special exercises or supplements, except it did mention that abnormally low levels of aldosterone sometimes cause hearing loss that can be improved by raising levels of that hormone. It gave old, broken links to supplements and mentioned a low sodium diet as one way.

This book goes more into information about hearing, hearing issues and hearing loss, than it goes into cures and remedies. But it is a good basic guide to understand fundamentals of hearing and the things that can affect it. The author addresses issues from birth, congenital, environmental as well as age-related causes. He does go into some of the treatments and ways to prevent, minimize or perhaps reverse hearing loss. I would have liked to see more natural remedies explores, from essential oils, to ear coning and supplements such as taurine- which is an excellent natural treatment for tinnitus. But overall it is a good read and solid information. But especially in today’s fast paced environment where ear plugs and loud noises are all around us-- damaging our hearing… it’s important to become aware of ways to care for and protect our hearing. Once it’s gone, it’s hard to correct :)

I bought this book because of the raving reviews, but the book itself is a complete disappointment. No cure is given, and the little information about hearing can be found on the web for free. A waste of time and money.

The author is able to bring real life to the subject of the post-Roman period in England and easily explains what happened after the Angles and Saxons arrived. The overthrow of the Britons is a torrid story filled with heartbreak and conquest, fleeing queens and kings, and the contest for power. This is history at its best.For those of a more cynical bent, Mr. Phillips does base most of his search on linguistic associations. He is an expert at putting together clues from ancient languages, fascinating in itself, but somewhat limiting as far as archeology is concerned. Since there are no records of note from the time following the departure of the Roman Legions, Mr. Phillips has to follow the scantiest of clues to his goal. Did he lose his way? Mr. Phillips admits much of the evidence is thin. Those looking for hard boiled substance, such as stone carved lists, headstones with particular names, signed histories with exacting places catalogued written in 500AD will be sorely disappointed. After all, the history is lost because these archeological items and historical writings do not exist. If they did exist there would be no need for Mr. Phillips.I think the author has done a credible job of tracing through a spider web of almost nothing to a reasonable conclusion about King Arthur and his final resting place. The threads are faint, but no historian could have done better. He is a brilliant thinker and his ability to connect traces of fact to actual artifacts, poems, and stories is remarkable. Is he right? Until more is known it is impossible to tell, but his story is gripping, fun, and insightful in ways everyone can appreciate.Highly recommended.AD2

I will say right from the start that 2 things are quite obvious about this book. 1) It is entertaining and 2) The author thinks quite highly of himself, though he does not consider himself a historian, an archaeologist, or even a professional textual researcher. The best way to describe it, is when someone gets a little knowledge in a subject, and instantly knows more than their professors at University, who are obviously not as smart as them. This is the feel one gets - especially if they ARE a historian, or archaeologist, or anthropologist.However the book is topically entertaining, and other then some roughly constructed rhetoric, reads like a great Jr. High 'historic novel'. So if you want a light read on an interesting topic, written by a professional writer who believes they are far more knowledgeable then the actual experts in the field (and which WILL make any serious scholar belly-laugh), this is your book. If you also believe that ancient astronauts formed the Maya civilization and the pyramids in Egypt, or that archaeology and field research is just like the Indiana Jones movies - GET THIS BOOK NOW! It gets 4 stars for entertainment (Comedy) and 2 stars for content and quality of research - so 3 stars on average.

This book is well researched and then reasoned from the facts, with due diligence given to possible counter arguments. While the archeological evidence has yet to be attempted, this is the most cogent case for the existence of Arthur I have read.

An incredibly well considered and documented journal of another search for the historic King Arthur, Camelot and his tomb on the Isle of Avalon. Phillips makes a very compelling case through careful linguistic detective work and meticulous documentation and cross-referencing of multiple sources. While this is an academic work primarily, it has enough personality to hold a serious reader. I was reading it as an addition to existing research I'm engaged in and in that task, it added a great deal to my knowledge of early England, Wales and Anglesey. If you have an easy time with Welsh and Brythonic pronunciations and have a serious interest in the Arthurian Sagas, then you'll really enjoy this book. The color plates in the paperback version are worth every bit of extra cost. The book is also well covered with internal maps to aid in mentally retaining all the information. This is truly a storehouse of ancient locations and names and the author does present a great deal of evidence in support of his conclusions. Add a star if this kind of reading is one you enjoy.

I couldn't put this book down, its fabulous! Mr. Phillips has written an incredible book of academic, yet in an entertaining manner that makes it a pleasure to follow him through the pages of his journey. Two decades of research and clever investigation to piece together a legendary story that goes beyond the romantic sagas that we are all so acquainted with. Perhaps the author didn't understand that makers who use SBCs combine hardware and software to create useful functional devices. There was almost nothing in this book to help a maker become proficient at combining sensors, motion, mechanisms, and control software to create useful devices. This was essentially an intro to the Raspberry Pi and the Linux OS, which really had very little to do with makers or making. Based on the book title, I expected detailed information about creating custom hardware devices using the Pi and the myriad available accessories. In my opinion, the title is extremely misleading. Because it said it was for makers, I expected a lot of detail about building things, not another intro to Pi book. There should have been examples of using a wide variety of sensors, controlling servos, attaching touchscreen displays, and other similar topics. I even expected some examples of methods for getting the Pi to talk to hardware which doesn't already have drivers built into the OS. I honestly don't feel like I learned anything about making things after reading this entire book. Very disappointing.

Aaron Newcomb is great. This book was very useful in getting used to the command line.

The Linux OS is a free and easy to manipulate code system used on devices such as the Raspberry Pi (the computer, not the pastry), Arduino’s, and more. One of the greatest benefits of Linux is that it can be customized very easily. However, this comes with the downside of leaving nearly all aspects of the code to the user, which can be very confusing. Make: Linux for Makers attempts to ease the confusion while showing the power of the Linux kernel. I started this book with effectively no prior knowledge about Linux. The book was able to explain Linux to me in a way that even a novice could understand. Furthermore, the book is very, very helpful for setting up the Raspberry Pi, which can be confusing since by default the Pi uses settings based from the UK. From here, it provides recommendations and alternatives to many different software packages. One that was especially useful was the desktop, which does not come by default. I personally chose Raspbian for my desktop, though the book explains that, while useful, the desktop is often times simply a waste of resources. The book showcases many of the shortcuts developers have added to Linux over the years, such as: sudo apt-get upgrade, which updates all software to the current version. A major benefit of Linux is that it can be modified in pretty much any way you want. Want to play mp3’s? Done. Want to control a separate computer? There’s a module for that. Games? It has those too! This book is especially helpful since Linux can be daunting to those who don’t have experience with this system. You are dropped into a black screen with nothing but an empty line at first, and must build it from there. The terminal is the command center of Linux and with this book you can unleash its full potential! However, the book does have a few flaws. It does not explain how to set up the software after the download, how to connect the raspberry pi to a computer, or what hardware you will need. Thankfully, the internet has easy tutorials for each of these, so I feel these errors can be easily forgiven. Overall, if you have been avoiding trying a Raspberry Pi just because of Linux, this book will teach you how to tame and control this powerful system. The writer of the book has also made a Raspberry Pi emulator for those who want a kind of “trial version” of the Raspberry Pi on the internet. I have to admit with the first review lady, some of the best I have seen too and I have hundreds of art books! The artist does provide everything in detail and short of getting an instruction video, this person has written once of the best books. A more complicated but worth while volume to get is also "How to Paint Like the Old Masters" by J Sheppard and "Vibrant Children's Portraits: Painting Beautiful Hair and Skin Tones with Oils" by V Lisi is also very good. If you want to learn more get this book, it will help or at least give ideas. Step by step in detail instruction for this book and step by step for the other 2 I threw in. I hate getting these 1/2 wit black and white some color less detail step by step books. I have spent a small fortune trying to get the one I could really use that were extremely helpful. This book was a joy to get in the mail no disappointments!

I have bought a lot of good books that explain portrait painting, but I view this one as the best. The reason is only four colors are usedand he explains how to mix them to get the tones you need. I also contacted him and got the DVD that goes with this book, which is a must andgoes into step by step as he paints the portrait. You need this book if you are serious about learning how to paint portraits!

I like things presented to me like a recipe, where the fear is taken out of it. just terrific. you will be happy you bought it. and, what you learn can be transferred to other portraits, not just the baby in the photo

I've read all the books in this series and until the last few, I had been enjoying them. However, the stories just aren't as interesting as they used to be and the "who done it" isn't that hard to figure out.In Chocolate Cream Pie Murder, Hannah has decided to tell the town the truth about Ross at the end of a Sunday church service. That is far from the end of it though as Ross is still causing trouble and stress for her when he shows up in town a few days later.The exact reason behind the murder in this book wasn't fully obvious but I strongly suspected part of it and knew who would be killed and who did it LONG before the murder actually occurred. The first 3/4 of the book takes place over 8 days in February as Hannah is still trying to deal with the aftermath of her learning the truth about her "marriage" to Ross a few month earlier. Once the murder finally occurs, it is solved in a day or so over a couple of chapters. Then the (sadly) very predictable final chapter and we are left once again to wonder what will happen in yet another book. Yawn....A few thoughts on plot points:I do like the rapport between the main characters. I also like the occasional bits of humour thrown in by various characters. That being said, I do cringe when Delores gets on one of her criticizing streaks about how Hannah dresses or does her hair/makeup. Delores may think it is well intentioned but it comes across as Hannah not living up to Delores's expectations. Hannah is her own person and should dress/appear as she is comfortable.This book seemed to have more filler than usual - not just in recipes but in things that just took up space rather than advancing the plot. I'm not referring to Hannah and friends being stuck at the condo during the blizzard - that was an interesting dynamic. Instead, I felt that the following three segments could easily have been cut and replaced by real plot development.1) Delores asking Hannah to come up with an appetizer for her and Stephanie Bascomb, the ensuing discussion on sugared grapes, Hannah's trip to the Red Owl and the recipe.2) Readers all know that Moishe and Cuddles love to have their chase in Hannah's condo. Full out details of the (usual) three laps ONCE per book is more than sufficient. Any more than that is filler.3)The stress on Hannah is obvious but trying to express it in a dream sequence is lame and tired. Ms Fluke had done this in the past and it just feels like it was forced and inserted as an excuse to bring in yet another recipe.In the more recent books it seems that Ms Fluke has been trying to be more of a cookbook author than cozy mystery author. The actual story and plot seems to get thinner and the recipes more plentiful and detailed. Most of the recipes list the brand name for some of the ingredients which makes me wonder if she is being paid for naming the brand or receiving free/discounted merchandise in return. Most recipes include extremely detailed directions geared to a novice cook which is fine for some but rather boring for more experienced cooks. With the Kindle version of Chocolate Cream Pie Murder there was no recipe index at the beginning or end so if you didn't bookmark it, good luck finding any of the recipes you may actually have been interested in trying.Personally, I'd prefer to see ALL of the recipes at the END of the book rather than stuffed in at the end of almost every chapter. It would be far less disruptive to the flow of the story if you could just keep reading rather than having to flip/scroll through several pages of recipe info before finding the next chapter. Then again, if Ms Fluke were to put all the recipes at the end, it would be a bit too obvious how little of the book was actually dealing with the story. It's hard to tell from the Kindle edition, but my guess would be at least 25% of this book is the recipes - probably more.Yes, Hannah owns and operates "The Cookie Jar" but you don't have to share every recipe mentioned in every book. Pick a few - maybe 6-10 and put them at the end of the book. Then every few years release another Lake Eden Cookbook for those who want it all.

I've read every Hannah Swensen book and this one was a big disappointment. Nothing happened for 3/4ths of the book and then they rushed a murder and solving it at the end. The plot was ridiculous and it truly seemed like a filler until the next novel comes out. I'm truly tired of the writer drawing things out so that there are more questions than answers at the end. Hannah's love life is pitiful and I'm over it. It's a shame because I read the books because I really enjoy the characters. I'll likely look for the next book at the library instead of pre-ordering like I've done with the last three books.

This was the worst book I have read in a long while. The writing is so elementary, way too many recipes and too repetitive. No mystery build up...felt like it was written by a twelve year old. Amazing how she painstakingly told us how to cook all the recipes and then repeated the recipe and directions at end of each chapter. I was so disappointed and I do not care that she left a truly teenage cliffhanger at the end...I will not read another of her books.

Too many recipes and not enough substance with this story. Will not purchase future books but check out from library.

I have followed this series from the beginning but her writing is starting to get very frustrating. This book was more about food and recipes than getting to the plot. Even the debates Hannah had between herself got to the point that I skipped over them. I'm tired of her waffling between Norman and Mike and now that she's probably pregnant, that's going get even worse. I think I'll just stick to Nora Roberts and Mary Higgins Clark for my romantic mystery fix. At least they haven't gotten into the soap opera thing. Hopefully they never will.

This is the last Hannah Swenson mystery I will ever read. I’ve read every one of these mysteries and I have no idea why they have become more like cookbooks than mysteries. Every conversation seems to be some description of some food that Hannah or Michele are coking, baking or thinking about cooking or baking. It is completely unrealistic that someone would get up in front of a church congregation to discuss something so personal and so nobody’s business! I also became so annoyed that Hannah has gone from gutsy, smart business woman to a milk toast fainting all over the place. It seems like this book was written by 3 different people. The ending was also ridiculous and seemed like it was thought of in 5 minutes because it’s time to wrap up the story. There were absolutely no surprises in this at all. I knew what Hannah’s stomach issue would be about the first time she felt sick. A real lack of imagination and I have no interest in pursuing how that turns out. I am really, really disappointed in this book and I feel duped by the author. No more Hannah Swenson for me.

I’m a fan of this series, but after 24 books, I sometimes feel irritated with Hanna’s lack of personal knowledge (has she read nothing but cookbooks since she left college?) and her relationship with Norman and Mike. Also, this book a long time to get to the actual mystery and the wrap up ( I.e.: figuring out who was the killer) was rushed. In all, this book seems like a place filler between books 23 & 25. If you like the series, then I’d recommend the book for answering the questions from book 23. Just assume that it’s not as suspenseful as some of the others

The last couple books have been more like short stories than a full book. Story line is rushed and predictable— no suspense left at all. Author more concerned with including a cliff hanger for the next book than developing the story. As short as these books have become, there should be a new one every couple months instead of maybe once a year.
