The book starts with the rough life of the author who has experienced a relationship breakup and not so satisfying jobs. He gets a job as a cruise ship videographer and has chapters giving you insights into different aspects. From his angst with the water-proof compartments to the food and dating, and partying to how far some crew members will go to earn extra money.The book was written in the past tense and at times he summarized the experiences versus making you feel like you were there with him, which is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5. Each chapter, though, has entertaining stories to give you insight into the cruise employee life. It was an entertaining and interesting read, and I got more insight and appreciation for the ship videographers now.

Seems to be a lot of well written reviews on this book already. I do agree there is a lot of material packed into 80 pages. Example are short, practical , well written and to the point. Not for the beginner.Would be helpful if one already new their Major Scales and fingering, and the diatonic chords built on the Major scale along with some music theory.Also knowledge of Bar Chords and some of their extensions would be helpful. Over the years I have gone through many of the so called popular methods such as the Ronny Lee's and Mickey Baker's books. I find this book to be the modern version of these books.Lots of good up- to date information and condensed examples that can be applied to one's playing for the serious student of Jazz Guitar. And if you find the book to difficult or moving to fast, perhaps you are not ready for this level of guitar playing . Also consider that a good teacher might be able to direct you in the right direction, or pace you through this book based on your experience and knowledge.

Not laid out in a manner I prefer but all the content is great and I know enough to use what I need.jazz is not really for beginners anyway so yeah its a good book if you can already play.

Excellent book. Many good jazz chord progressions. Lots of jazzy licks in tablature. Has some really good jazz standards. The CD is very helpful. I would say that this book is good for intermediate and experienced players.

I bought in the kindle version, i can't see some pages because the images are too small. Also i didn't receive the audio. I recommend to buy the paper version, not the kindle one.

This book is information dense and it's going to take a bit of time to soak it all in. All in all, it's great book covering alot of ground.

This is a great book for learning the basics of how to play jazz guitar. While it's not necessarily for a beginner guitarist, it's still a good book for learning jazz.

The book seems to attempt to present everything in 80 pages.To illustrate, on the 8 first pages on chords, 80 different chords are presented (all with the same root, C). The title of the ninth page is "Other common chords".Sure, these are all chords that are used in jazz, but the challenge is to get so familiar with different chords that changes are almost second nature, and then I -for one- need the information presented in smaller chuncks and some excercises to internalize the information. Within the 8 pages there are 4 pages of chord progression that you may play to use the different chords. But even playing through them 10 or 20 times is not sufficient to learn 80 chords. (The chord chart is provided for each chord, so you do not need to remember any chord to play the progressions, which also slows the learning.) Moreover, there is no explanation of how each chord is derived from more basic forms, these are simply 80 independent objects to remember.All these chord progression is played on the accompanying CD, and with a definitely jazz-comp feel. However, while the book indicate an even strumming, four beat per measure, the actual playing in the CD is a syncopated rythm. Moreover, the bass is more prominent in the sound than the guitar, so it is hard to pick up the rythm used on the CD. The guitar is not isolated in one of the channel, so it is impossible to enhance it. This is a larger problem later, where the ensamble is larger with a sax, a piano, bass and drums. The guitar comp is very hard to isolate, to figure out what is going on.When it comes to improvisation the picture is the same. While other beginning books sticks to the major scale for a long time, the book jumps right ahead to harmonic minor, melodiv minor, diminised and whole tone scales. You are told that over the dominant chord you may use the mixolydian, he Prygian dominant, Lydian dominant, Super locrian, Dominant diminished, Whole tone or mixolydian scale. All this information is given before the first example of a solo is presented. And when the first solo is presented there is no analysis of it. Presumably there is no need to, all the information is already presented.If you already know a lot about jazz guitar, but need a short summary; a place to look up jazz-chord, fingerings of the different scales, brief review of which scales to use on which chords etc. This may be the book for you, hence the two stars. This also applies to those who have tons of book but lack one that summarizes it all. But as an instructional book for those who want to learn jazz guitar however, I would not recommend this one.

I loved the author’s first book but this one was a huge disappointment. I rarely buy books when they first come out but I bought this one right away. It was hard to get into but I forced myself to finish it since I paid full price. The characters were awful and unbelievable. Story lines were both boring but also hard to follow. The ending was not exciting at all. All of a sudden small important details became important while everything else that the book went to detail on were unimportant. I would not recommend this book

Truly awful.I loved the author's first book and had good expectations for this one. Unfortunately this book was one of the most difficult books to finish because I really did not care about any of the characters. Maybe if you are a fan of the Real Housewives or Kardashians you would find this more interesting but if you hate that kind of reality TV as much as I do you will find little of interest here. The writing was poor and the characters were unlikable. As a side note, I am really tired of the switching time gimmick that so many authors seem to be using. If you have a good story to tell, just tell it. The back and forth between present and past really becomes nothing more than a tedious gimmick, especially when the story isn't compelling to begin with.

If I could return this book, I would. I cannot imagine how it ever got published. I read a lot and kept hoping it would get better. The characters were confusing, not interesting and just plain awful. I forced myself to continue thinking I needed to give the story time to develop. It didn't. Don't waste your money.

I loved the authors first book so I immediately purchased this one. What a complete disappointment... It is so badly written, I felt myself zoning out and having to back track to see which character she is referencing. At times this book seemed more like a commercial for popular products than an actual work of fiction. Don't waste your money on this book... absolutely dreadful.

I only got 22% through the book and just gave up on finishing. Every single character was despicable and ugly-minded and hateful. The characters spewed such constant venom that the negativity and continual ugly made it impossible for me to continue. The premise was promising, but the execution was just not for me.

What a huge disappointment! The writing couldn't have been more pretentious. I enjoyed The Luckiest Girl Alive, but in this book, the author should have eliminated 90% of brand references and concentrated on developing the plot instead of trying to dazzle the reader with her worldliness.Bottom line--- don't waste your time!

I rarely leave a book unfinished, but I surrendered after reading 75 pages. The characters, far too many, were interchangeable and uninteresting. There was nothing to grab me. I’m puzzled by all the hype.

These people were all so nasty; liars, selfish, etc. I did finish it, but can't say I was very favorably impressed with it.

The only reason why I didn't give five stars to this book is because it looks pretty awful in the first Kindle edition. It gets really hard and blurry to read, so my first advice is: either buy the paperback version of this book or make sure you have a very recent version of Kindle. It should look better in a better-definition display.Regarding the contents, this book is hilarious. If you follow up with The Oatmeal's posts, you won't see many news here. This books is a compilation of the funniest and most useful posts (I personally find the Types of High Fives post extremely useful) and a couple of new ones (too bad that he didn't include the "What if your brain was your imaginary friend", because I really like that one). If you liked the posts on the site and feel like re-reading them, then sure, go ahead and grab this book.

I love The Oatmeal, so gave this as a gift. Strangely enough, it seems to me that both my husband and I just don't pick this up very often. After the first read, there seems to be little reason to revisit it. I'd stick to online or maybe getting a poster of a favorite strip. The Oatmeal is just more satisfying, I think, when you can keep clicking. (Yes, this is just my opinion and has nothing really to do with the quality of the work within, but these days, perhaps a good portion of our enjoyment of creative works is coming from format.)

I love Matthew Inman. I faithfully followed his webcomic after seeing a link shared on facebook. His punchlines and illustrations have got me through many depressing, drunken pitiful nights. His sense of humor is dark, witty, and offensively resonant with most people who have at least half their soul left. Buy the book, it makes for great bathroom and/or coffee table reading...!!!PS they also have sales on his website theoatmeal.com so you can probably grab it for cheaper there. I was just too lazy to set up an account and I knew Amazon would have it to my doorstep just in time for the holidays. It even comes with a poster (which, sadly, my dog shat on so I couldn't hang it up) But either way, good stuff! :-)

This is a book of humor from theoatmeal.com. If you have not heard of theOatmeal, go there now. If you have no sense of humor then you should probably move on.The construction of the tome itself is very high quality and shiny. I like shiny things. It has that new book smell too, of course, so you can get that high which is rarer and rarer these days. (e-books, I am looking at you) One of the issues is that as you are reading it on the can; you will find it is hard to balance opening the book, holding it open to read the juicy bits that are always on the interior fold and not creasing the binding. I tend to obsess about new book quality, but not so much as to not keep them near the crapper. You probably do not ever want to borrow a book from me. Or anyone for that matter; as we all know this is where 98% of the reading is done.Get the book, you will have a laugh and something nice to put on the toilet tank.

Inman's first collection is a mixed bag. Some of the bits in here are hilarious riffs on society, such as why phone calling is painful, the horrid experiences we all share iwth pedestrians, and airplane rides from doom. Some of the bits are educational: Tesla vs. Edison; the history of beer; Pig facts. Then, unfortunately, there are the duds. When Inman misfires, he misfires grandly. The five page segment on a poetry spouting pterodactyl is horrible!Overall, this was entertaining, but not as good as the newest collection about 'Grizzly Bears.'I will keep reading!

There is no place for exaggeration and unctuous praise in any review but I fear any fan runs the risk of coming across this way.I dutifully pre-ordered this volume and it was worth every penny.What's so great about this book?1. It's by the Oatmeal. Yeah, I know- duh.2. It contains a decent chunk of the classic comics plus some new ones and a removable poster. Sure it would been a wonderful addition to have the articles but hey, then it would have cost much more than $7 and change. It's printed on high-quality paper and quite simply, a colourful addition to any collection. Not personally into such things but it might also be someone's answer to the ideal micro-coffee table book.3. Not a single wasted page, which is amazing. Every book, whether it's a textbook or nursery rhymes has b.s. pages that are blank. This did not. What can I say, I like efficiency and one less dead tree.Are any of the things I've enumerated reasons to help feed Inman for a day? Of course not.I won't pretend this book is life-changing, some overused adjective on par with AWESOME!!!, or that it's even necessary reading. A lot of this stuff is already online, so big whoop, right?Well... it cracks me up that this shot straight to the (very nearly) top amidst self-help, dieting, and pulp fiction. Therefore, I say make this baby shine.Help keep America semi-literate!

I am a fan of the Oatmeal, so I thought that I would purchase his book as one of my first Kindle eBooks. It is pretty much as funny as I expected, however a few caveats:1) most of the comics appear to be available on his website, but I like to support artists whom I enjoy.2) it's rather shortAnd 3) I read this on a Kindle HD 8.9, and because this book is mostly from web comics, there's little text. Most of the comics appear very small on the screen, and when you double-tap to enlarge them, it appears that the resolution stays the same. Therefore, it's oftentimes very hard to make out the words in the comics. Hopefully, this can be resolved in the future.

The characters in this book are all very special people. When Ellen goes to Hawaii to help Mandy she doesn’t expect to stay away from home for so long. When Rob starts working for Kens mom he is surprised when Ellen showed up to work with him. Watching these two try to hide their feelings will have you on the edge of your seat. Rob is hiding something and when the truth comes out his friends are surprised. You will feel God working throughout this whole book. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.

If into each life some rain must fall, some people have sprinkles and some of these people in The Hawaiian Discovery face hurricanes. Once again Wanda E. Brunstetter and Jean Brunstetter have delighted me with their authentic portrayal of Amish life circumstances, conflicts, and attitudes.I especially enjoyed the descriptions of life in Hawaii and the dual storylines happening in Kapaa, Kauai and Middlebury, Indiana as Mandy, Ellen, Sadie, Ezra, Ken, Rob, Luana, and Makai dealt with family problems, babies, accidents, failure to speak up, and some deception. I appreciate the helpfulness of the Amish community, their work ethic, and their willingness to put their own preferences aside and move across the country and ocean in order to help those whom they love. I hope that the Brunstetter authors will write another book involving Hawaii or possibly the Amish in other states or countries.I enthusiastically recommend reading The Hawaiian Discovery.I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

I was so happy to find there was a second book to this story. I loved the 1st book and couldn't wait to read this one. I sure hope there's going to be a 3rd book so we can see if Sadie finds her soul mate. This is an absolutely amazing story. Read in order so it doesn't get confusing.

Here we go again with the adventures of the life of Ellen and Mandy. Mandy is married to Ken and they own the Pleasant View Bed and Breakfast in Middlebury, Indiana. Tragedy strikes and Mandy and Ken head back to lovely Hawaii. Will they return?Ellen keeps running the B&B until new owners arrive. She ends up unemployed and wondering if she will ever find love.
