Daniel Pink interviews Reid Hoffman / Ben Casnocha / Chris Yeh Daniel H. Pink is the author of Drive, To Sell is Human, A Whole New Mind, and other books about business and behavior. Every so often a company comes along that transforms the world of work. LinkedIn is one of those companies. Since its founding more than a decade ago, it has become the place where professionals build, maintain, and nurture their networks. For millions of people from all over the globe, LinkedIn is a source of opportunities, talent, even inspiration. But its founder, Reid Hoffman, isn’t content with merely building a hugely successful company. He’s also established himself as one of the most interesting thinkers in Silicon Valley. His first book, The Start Up of You, written with longtime collaborator Ben Casnocha, encouraged individuals to think of themselves as entrepreneurs, even if they were collecting a W-2 paycheck. Now Hoffman and Casnocha (with Chris Yeh) are back with a new book, which takes a smart, fresh, (and occasionally bracing) look at the evolving relationship between the bosses and the bossed. It’s a terrific and accessible read that provides business leaders with both insights and tools to handle a world in which talent is paramount. Pink: One of the many things I like about The Alliance is that you take on the notion that successful companies are “families.” Explain. Hoffman / Casnocha / Yeh: Some CEOs like to refer to their companies as families. The concept of family is a powerful one, and describes how the best companies treat their people: with compassion and respect. Yet we believe that using family language is a big mistake. The problem is that families are permanent--you can't fire your kids, no matter how many times they may forget to take out the trash. Companies are not permanent. The instant you lay off an underperforming employee, or someone leaves to pursue a better opportunity, the illusion of family is shattered. The only way to maintain the fiction is for people to lie to themselves and each other. This underlying dishonesty is corrosive, and prevents the kind of trust that is necessary for a close, high-performance relationship. Both sides need to be honest with each other about the fact that the employment might not be permanent. Pink: The big idea in this book is the “tour of duty.” How did you come up with that concept? Hoffman / Casnocha / Yeh: We realized the employment relationship was broken. The family model was no longer affordable, but the opposite approach of treating every employee like a free agent doesn’t build the high trust, collaborative relationships necessary for innovation. Many Silicon Valley companies began using the Alliance and tour of duty frameworks as a way to manage the employer-employee relationship for the modern era. One of us (Reid) deployed it successfully when founding LinkedIn. In order to attract great people, he avoided vague talk about loyalty and instead made an explicit deal with employees: if they signed up for a tour of duty of between two to four years and made an important contribution to the business, Reid and the company would help advance their careers, preferably in the form of another tour of duty at LinkedIn, or at a different company if that's what was best for them. This approach provided a crisp focus and a mutually agreeable time frame for discussing the employment relationship. It improved retention of great employees at LinkedIn. The paradox of the tour of duty idea is that acknowledging the fact that an employee can and might leave your company in the future improves your ability to construct a tour of duty that convinces him or her to stay. Pink: How does a sense of purpose factor in to your analysis of talent and its place in modern organization? Hoffman / Casnocha / Yeh: A sense of purpose matters hugely for employee engagement and effectiveness, but you don't get that through a single, company-wide mission statement. Most corporate mission statements are little loved and have little impact on the day to day task of recruiting and retaining great people. Click here to read the full interview

People with talent have more options. That is true in good times and in bad, for high-level skilled workers and for those with low-level skills. In almost every country in the world, staff can be “let go.” This can be a protracted process, or a simple one. If the company does not need or want you, your employment will be terminated. The employees are expected to be loyal and committed, and to work in the best interests of the company until they retire. This is despite the clear but rarely ever stated, understanding that your job might disappear as a result of a restructuring, or a decree from a boardroom in another country. Should you, in turn, inform you company that you have accepted an offer of better employment, you might be asked to leave immediately. This is instead of working out your notice period, because you cannot be trusted to work out your time in the best interests of the company. After all, you have left before your retirement. No thoughtful person should be unaware of this imbalance – the employee must commit, but the company cannot be expected to.The days when “employers and employees committed to each other, for better or worse, through bull and bear markets, until retirement did them part,” are over. Loyalty is scarce, long-term ties are rare. The past will not, and cannot return The Alliance, Hoffman’s latest book, addresses this problem. You cannot get a person’s talent working for the good of the company if you do not have their commitment. Employees who fail to fully invest in their current positions are constantly scanning the marketplace for new opportunities. What we can expect, and what the book sets out to sketch is a framework that encourages a different employer-employee relationship.Reid Hoffman is an internet entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and author, best known as the co-founder of LinkedIn, The Alliance describes a relationship based on both employer and employee adding value to each other: “Help make our company more valuable, and we will make you more valuable.”This is a team where mutually adding value secures the bond. It is not a family were commitment is unchanging. No one asks their child to leave because she scored an “F” in biology,The Alliance has already taken root in the high-tech, start-up community of Silicon Valley. The secret of success in Silicon Valley is really about the way the companies build alliances with their people. Talent is Silicon Valley’s most valuable resource, and they treat this resource accordingly, explains Hoffman. Most people will know about the geniuses of the Valley, but few about it’s management practices. Employers use the alliance to recruit, manage, and retain incredibly talented, entrepreneurial employees.Hoffman uses the term “Tour of Duty” to describe how employment is understood. The term comes from the military where a tour of duty refers to a single specific deployment. A soldier will see a number of tours of duty in his career, each for a predetermined time, and to accomplish a specific task. One might be to assist with the evacuation effort after the earthquake, and another to secure a hospital in a remote area.In the business context, a tour of duty is a clearly defined task to be achieve within a finite period of time. It is an ethical, reciprocal, commitment between employer and employee. The company commits to honouring its obligations to the employee during this tour of duty, and the employee commits to honouring the needs of the company for this finite period. The expectation of value from each party are made explicit, and are accepted by the other. You, the employee will be exposed and trained in the merchandising methods of the firm for the next 18 months, and will learn about our state-of-the-art systems. This, we agree is something necessary for the career you desire to pursue, here or somewhere else. You will fulfil your task thoughtfully, and will look for ways the company can improve their systems and alert us to new possibilities. There are three general tours of duty. The most basic one is the Rotational Tour. This is a fairly structured tour designed for entry-level staff, often to get acquainted with the company and to be exposed to various facets of the business they might wish to contribute to. Google, for example, puts recent college graduates through a structured, twenty-seven-month Rotational tour that exposes them to three different roles each for nine months. Both the staff member and the company benefit from this fixed term commitment. The second level tour of duty is the Transformational tour. This tour will be tailored to the specific needs of the company, and the specific aspirations of the employee. It is called “Transformational” because it is intended to transform both the company and the career of the employee. An initial transformations tour will last between and two and five years.Violating the commitment during what is essentially a short period, would not be in the interests of any mature employee. Who would hire talent that did not honour commitments made, and who would choose to work for an organization that does not honour commitments made to employees? The third tour of duty is only offered to those employees who are a perfect cultural fit with the organization. The employee “sees working at the company as his last job, and the company wants the employee to stay until he retires.” This is called the Foundational tour of duty.Mutual respect underlies this alliance. Expectations are required of both sides, as well as the satisfaction of each other’s needs. The duration of the relationship is, for the most part, relatively short, making commitment possible to honour. The book describes all aspects of the implementation, and forewarns of challenges you might encounter. Our workplaces will benefit from this re-think.Readability Light --+-- SeriousInsights High --+-- LowPractical High --+-- Low*Ian Mann of Gateways consults internationally on leadership and strategy and is the author of Strategy that Works.

An easy, but useful, read. In my experience, most business books have about 30 pages of information that the author repeats 5 or 6 times to get to book length. This book isn't like that. It is actually useful. The authors attack the tired concept that a business is like a "family" by, in my opinion, more accurately analogizing the relationship to that of an alliance. The employer and employee are allies initially, and perhaps the alliance will continue for a long time, but the alliance will change with time. Indeed, the authors argue that the alliance may continue after the employer-employee relationship has ended. They present examples (e.g., alumni groups) of how this might work. I was also impressed with the authors' emphasis on the ethical dimensions of an alliance. Lifetime employment may be rare, but long-term relationships may still be formed.Social media's integration into the alliance will undoubtedly occur. The authors suggest some ways to do so. This process will probably require more management attention than anticipated.I am in higher education and the prescriptions of the authors will not apply there as completely as it might to high tech and other businesses. However, for me, the book inspired consideration of how some of its ideas might be applied in my world. I recommend it.

Want to keep both employees and companies in a trusted win-win relationship? This book offers a framework for open and respectful communication, goal setting, and an ethical obligation to keep each other accountable. The writers have done a great job encapsulating the essence of what the recruitment process should do; tightly frame a potential job opportunity and encourage an open and honest dialog with likeminded candidates; defining what the company and individual can expect to gain from each other, within a specified timeframe. The second half of the book dives into network intelligence and the power of alumni networks. This is just smart business practice and should be implemented depending on your company’s size. Employees and alumni are your greatest asset.Worthy quick read that will give you something for your personal toolbox!

In the past forty years, the relationship between employers and employees has changed. Lifetime employment has become a thing of the past while talent is now expected to hop from job to job. While this state of affairs offers unprecedented labor mobility, it also reduces trust. Employers don't invest in their employees as much because they don't want to waste resources on people that won't stay. Employees aren't loyal to their companies because they feel that they are expendable. It is this lack of trust that "The Alliance" seeks to alleviate through a simple brilliant idea: employers and employees should be honest about the transitory nature of jobs and look at them as "Tours of Duty" where an employer gets something concrete accomplished for the company while the employee gets an experience that will help them develop their careers. In short, employer and employee form an alliance. Through this experience, everyone gets what they want, and on top of that, everyone is left happier. It's a brilliant idea that seems highly relevant to American society. This book is worth reading just to get a good understanding of this simple idea. Unfortunately, there isn't all that much other than this idea in the book. It feels like it could have been published as a Kindle Single. Overall, an excellent, if quick, read.

If your looking for a book that not only coverers all aspects of road cycling (buying, maintenance, training, riding skills), but also does it in a clear concise method, then this is the book.As a mountain biker, who just bought my first road bike, I was looking for any and all the information I could find on road cycling. I have read a few magazines and bought one other book, but it did not give me the all the information that I was looking for. After buying this book, I immediately knew that this was the book I was looking for. I not only read it in a few days, but also have been referring back to it, as I have become a more experienced rider.Everything is covered: from getting "fitted" riding in the rain, the importance of riding to a 90 cadence, group riding, racing tactics, training, to maintaining your bike. It is all here. Highly recommended.

I was a long time runner but due to a lifting wrong in the gym suffered a bulging lumbar disc. At the advice of my doctor, I decided to start cycling, something I had never done before and had little to no knowledge of the sport. This book helped me greatly in understanding what I need to know about purchasing a bike, how to get a proper fitting, ideas on training and riding in general. Although it is geared for someone who has greater aspirations that I regarding riding/racing goals, I found the book very informative and well written. I recommend it without hesitation.

I've been riding casually my entire life, but when I was ready to take it to the next level and do some serious riding, I bought this book because of the reviews. I am only on page 30 and the book has already paid for itself. I understand how to communicate with the bike shop when discussing different parts of my bike and was able to do a better job than the shop making adjustments. Now, my performance has improved and I'm not getting the same knee injuries I used to for months. I strongly recommend this book for cyclists that are thinking about racing or participating in tours.

I got back into road biking about 3 years ago to lower my blood pressure and get some stress relief. The last two years I ventured into longer rides (50, 65, 100 miles). I could complete the rides, but was feeling ... well slow, compared with the other riders. This book has taught me more about my bike and some fundamental skills. The best sections in my mind are those on exercise physiology, training, and nutrition. They quickly gave me some clue how to train, and why certain things were needed. Especially good is that the book is quite small and concise. I could read and get a lot of value from it in the first week.

I feel like I got my moneys worth and I am only halfway through the book. I have been a mountain biker for years but I am new to road biking. This book has given me some great road biking information as well as stuff I am looking forward to trying on my mountain bike.

This book is not just a guide for beginners in road cycling. It is also a complete manual to those who love cycling and who wants to enjoy the ride with perfect technique, nutrition and training standards. The books shows the way the rider can improve all his skills or how to learn ii, if he is a begginer. Moreover, it describe a wide range of aspects from how to buy a bycicle to how to train for a race and more.

If i had my way this book would be offered with every bike sold to any person buying a bike.however i would rename it: Opening up the vast world of opportunities for the serious cyclist.it is well written too.scotttorbett@yahoo.com

This is a great book, full of good insight for the novice rider. Once you start riding and/or racing often, you will find that it is quite basic. It's a great book for reference purposes.

A PRACTICAL REVIEW OF THE VALUE OF THIS BOOK. WHAT IT IS... AND WHAT IT ISN'T QUITEDESCRIPTION: I want to say up front that I love this book and very glad to own it. It is pretty much what I expected and I am not disappointed. I also want to be fair to future purchasers and explain what this book is, and what it isn't quite. The small publication (just under 7 1/2" tall and under 1/2" thick) is a treasure trove of great lines from the movie. There are wonderful lines from all seasons and you can imagine Violet features strongly as she has so many tremendous lines. There are also lines of wisdom as the title describes. But I would suggest the focus of this small book is also like a remembrance of great scenes. Rather than simple one liners from different characters, we get sections of lines from the script where characters interact. Not every entry is particularly prescient or witty, but it does refer us to a wonderful moment or scene. In such a small book, you may not find every single favorite line you expected to be there. But it is still a wonderful keepsake. Among the pages of lines and witticisms are also a few nice photos with more captions. I have included some photos of my own of the book that gives you examples of what to expect.SOME OBSERVATIONS: I don't want this to be a "cons" paragraph because I do love the book. But I do want to give just a few of those observations so prospective buyers know what to expect and expectations can be tempered. We all know this is what some might call "cash grab". But I am not going to call that a negative and the book will contain much of what you expect. That's what is important in the end. It's an inexpensive book if you get the right price (it cost me under $10). As I said, it's a terrific keepsake and the content is worthy. But for the price you shouldn't expect a flashy book. The cover is very no frills and the photos are nice, but not glitzy like a large photo book. If I were to do anything differently, it would only be this: I like the witticisms the most so I would have put even more emphasis on that. I think they also could have done a really classy cover that would exude the opulence of the former age. But to be fair, that would be a much more expensive book and might put some buyers off. I would describe this book as built for enjoyment rather than display, and that is a worthy goal for producing it. I did notice the original retail sticker from publisher leaves a mark on the back no matter what I did.If you love the show and treasure many of the one liners or interaction that make it so memorable, this is a worthy and normally very inexpensive way to relive a bit of those feelings from time to time. Since each entry is very small, you can sit back and enjoy it for just a few moments each time if that's all you wish. I highly recommend it.

Love this little book! Worth every penny. So many one-liners from the script over six seasons, from many various characters. Violet's quotations are the absolute best, as expected.

Once I could read it, (the print is ridiculously small.) The content is an excellent reminder of the high quality writing & acting from this phenomenal series. Kindle version is better as you can adjust the font

WHY, WHY, WHY??? This is a beautiful little book; exactly what I'd expected. So I tear open the box and what do I see but a sticker on the back...not only a sticker but the kind of sticker that leaves behind a sticky goo. Normally I would use Goo-b-gone but you cannot use that on a fabric cover. So I'm back to WHY would anyone put a sticker on a fabric cover... or any at all? I'm sure the book is worth the $10 but if I'd wanted to give it for a gift, I wouldn't be able to. If I'd seen it in the store, I'd've checked first to see if the sticker came off...and would not have purchased if I knew it left the back cover all messy. Anyone know how to remove goo from fabric? (All this is the reason for my 4- instead of 5-star rating... which you can't tell until you read my rant!) ...later that day: tried to remove aforementioned "goo" and realized that the cover is not fabric but a fabric-like paper... which was also removed when I tried to remove the gunk. So this is more a warning than a rating: leave the sticker on the book!

Presented in hardcover and bound to last, this is a delightful little book that is sure to replace Roget's in the Downton Abbey fan's house.I appreciate this book because the dialogue of the show is very British, and therefore the phrasing tends to the complex. There's also a dry, almost cynical wit to the show that rewards the careful viewer (and listener). Because of these factors, seeing the words in print enables me to call back to the episode and think about what was going on at the time of the quote. It's a fun, and I daresay intimate way to appreciate the quotes in this book. It almost makes me feel as though the character and I have a shared memory. Silly, I know, because it's just a TV show...but it's an engrossing and well done TV show.Anyway, enough gushing. For the Downton fan this is a good add to the library. I like it a lot.

I so appreciated 're-living the various Seasons of Downtons past. Miss Fellowes gave us a great little gift here...... Loved it

Just got this little book and was delighted to see quotes from Season Six (episode 1 just aired last week in U.S.) as well as the other five...devoured it in one sitting, and know I will return to it again and again. Beautifully subdivided by subject or situation, Julian's niece Jessica has organized a wonderful tome of humor and grace, focusing on the wonderful characters of Downton Abbey. A must-have for any fan!

We enjoyed reading this book. It is full of the great one liners from seasons 1-5. Very funny, intelligent, and poetic.

A detailed explanation of Taoism by Eva Wong that enables the reader to understand this often misunderstood ancient Chinese spiritual tradition. Eva says the following on page 1 : " This book is a guide to the spiritual landscape of Taoism. In it you will encounter events in the history of Taoism, meet the sages who wrote the Taoist texts, be introduced to the various schools of Taoist thinking, and get a feel for what it means to practice Taoism today." The book is divided into three parts : History of Taoism, Systems of Taoism, and Taoist Practices.

Informative if you are looking for a general take on Taoism, although maybe a bit boring, it is like a text book from school, that is meant to simply give you the facts and details. It goes trough the history of Taoism and then goes on explaining the different aspects of it, dividing the practices into different sects and making a division between different forms of Taoism.Theres atleast 5 different forms of Taoism, if I remember correctly. Divinational, Inner Alchemy, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Ritual. In the west Divinational and ritual Taoism are not represented and many might think they don't exist, so in this way the book is able to give information about something, that is not known in the west and also propably not written. The practices are also divided pretty much in the lines of the different forms. Theres a brief description about the practices, but if you are looking to find a deeper take on them, look elsewhere. This is a very general book and gives a very general view.Good for someone, who doesn't know anything about the subject, but leaves you thirsty, which in a way can be a good thing, or not, I don't know. Depends on the situation your at. Anyways, the information in this book should be known by all Taoists, so for your general education of the subject, go for it.

Excellent book to learn Taoism😀

Easy to understand. And clear sensible descriptions/explanations. I'm one my second reading.

Eva Wong scores again in this concise guide to Taoist history. Highly recommended for the person studying Taoism! The book helps place Taoist philosophy and practices in historical perspective.

wasn't as detailed about the practices as suggested. At the end it seemed the author ran out of steam and became very general. I think I read that it promised to actually detail the practices -- this was simply stating what the practices were.

Thought the book was kind of boring to read and intentionally vague in places. Often seemed like a run-on list of things, without any real context or useful description. It wasn't a total waste of time (hence the 2) and was good at directing me to other books that I might want to read. Wish I could've gotten it from the library.

I have always been interested in the origins of Taoism, and Eva Wongs book told me exactly what I had wanted to know. Avery good resource book!

The Hacking of the American Mind: The Science Behind the Corporate Takeover of Our Bodies and Brains, by Robert H. Lustig

Review

"Our health, resistance to disease, and ability to function on a day-to-day basis have essentially been hijacked, all in the name of corporate profits. Dr. Lustig explores how industry has manipulated our most deep-seated survival instincts to motivate our food choices in a way that directly undermines our ability to survive. But more importantly, The Hacking of the American Mind eloquently reveals how we can disengage from this influence and re-establish ourselves on a path to wellness." —David Perlmutter, MD, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, Grain Brain and Brain Maker“A provocative, persuasive plea to stop seeking the wrong kind of happiness. Take it from the neuroscientist/endocrinologist who sounded the alarm about sugar: chasing rewards is far less rewarding than finding contentment.”—Adam Grant, author of New York Times bestsellers Originals and Give and Take, and coauthor of the New York Times bestseller Option B"Robert Lustig takes on one of the greatest paradoxes of our time: how can it be that we have more sources of pleasure than ever before in human history, and yet are increasingly sick, broke, and unhappy? By deftly weaving together neuroscience, history, economics, and more, he provides a much-needed explanation of how the 'pernicious peddling of pleasure' causes real happiness to elude so many of us — and also provides a desperately needed roadmap for escaping the pleasure trap." —Sharon Begley, coauthor of the New York Times best seller The Emotional Life of Your Brain"Pleasure and happiness are not the same thing – as our addictions to everything from unhealthy food to cellphones show. In this book, Dr. Lustig unpacks the science of pleasure versus happiness to explain the true causes of the last 40 years of addiction, depression, and disease. The good news is that the solution is easy — well, maybe not so easy — put down your cellphone. And sleep. You’ll be happier, and you’ll live longer!"—Arianna Huffington, author of the New York Times best seller The Sleep Revolution"Dr. Robert Lustig examines our culture of illness, an industry-created fog that, despite our best efforts to cope, has left us stressed, isolated, addicted, and depressed. With The Hacking of the American Mind, he empowers us with the science of mind, brain, and love in a delightful, insightful, and humorous way. You can live by pursuing pleasure, sugar-coated as 'happiness,' or you can read this book."   —Elissa Epel, coauthor of the New York Times best seller The Telomere Effect

I am the editor and founder of the most visited natural health site on the web and had the opportunity to review Dr. Lustig’s book and interview him before it was published. He is perhaps best known for his brilliant research into sugar and obesity. His previous book, “Fat Chance:” was a New York Times Best Seller. Lustig is an emeritus professor of pediatrics in the division of endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco, and a member of the Institute for Health Policy Studies. His motivation for “writing the book began 30 years ago, while still a postdoctoral fellow in neuroscience at Rockefeller University. There, he learned about the interaction between dopamine and serotonin in the brain. At the time, only basic correlational data existed, but there appeared to be a very specific interaction going on between these two neurochemicals. The book discusses how many try to bolster their happiness through certain food choices, but this actually does not work, and Lustig provides compelling arguments that the foods you crave drive up dopamine and drive down serotonin. Rather, it’s experiences that make you happy. People can make you happy. You can make yourself happy. In his book, Lustig outlines a number of different strategies to become happier. Ultimately, the goal is [to increase] your serotonin,” he says. There are four ways to boost your serotonin, and they’re all free. They’re also things your grandmother likely told you to do. First and foremost is making human connections.Social media generate dopamine, associated with pleasure, and hence can drive addiction. The main problem is that when dopamine goes up, serotonin goes down. So, online communication is actually a major causative factor of unhappiness. Lustig also elaborates on how companies — both food manufacturers and electronics companies — capitalize on the biology of dopamine versus serotonin to get us addicted to their products. It’s important to realize that the dopamine (or reward-generating) pathway is the same no matter what your source of pleasure is. It can be a substance, such as nicotine, alcohol, heroin or junk food; or it can be behavior, such as internet surfing, shopping or pornography. The problem, in a nutshell, is that dopamine is an excitatory neurotransmitter, and in excess is neurotoxic. When dopamine is released, and the neuron on the other side accepts the signal, it can damage that neuron. Over time, excitatory neurotransmitters can cause cell death. To protect itself from damage, the postsynaptic neuron employs a self-protective mechanism — it downregulates its receptors.By having fewer receptors, the dopamine cannot do as much damage. So, each time you get a “hit” or rush of dopamine, the number of receptors decrease. As a result, you need increasingly larger doses or “hits” to get the same rush. Eventually, you end up with tolerance, a state where even a large dose produces no effect. Once the neurons start to actually die off, you’re a full-blown addict. Serotonin, on the other hand, is not an excitatory neurotransmitter. When it acts on the serotonin-1a receptor (the “contentment” receptor), no damage occurs. Hence, happiness does not lead to addictive behavior. Keep in mind that dopamine downregulates serotonin, so it’s basically impossible to achieve happiness (related to serotonin) through pleasure-seeking behavior (related to dopamine). One of the cheapest pleasures that stimulates dopamine is sugar. Many reach for sweet junk food when they feel down, thinking it’ll help them feel better, but neurochemical science reveals this simply cannot happen. Add the stress hormone cortisol to the mix, which downregulates the serotonin-1a receptor, and you have a recipe for both addiction and depression. That’s what we’re seeing throughout all of civilized society, not just in America, but around the world. There are three other ways, besides connecting, that boost serotonin and happiness. The remaining three of the four C’s are:1. Contribute: Meaning the act of contributing to something greater than yourself; making a contribution to society. “You can get happiness and contentment from your job, but there are certain criteria that have to be met,” Lustig says. “Most people, unfortunately, have a boss who is not contributing to their happiness. The workplace is not usually the best place to achieve meaningful contentment.”2. Cope: Lack of sleep, insufficient exercise and multitasking are all causes of unhappiness. Sleep is extremely important for healthy serotonin production. Here, avoiding exposure to electronic screens is important, as blue light inhibits melatonin production, thereby making sleep more elusive. Electronics will also disrupt your sleep and deteriorate your health by exposing you to unnecessary microwaves, discussed in this recent article on depression.3. Cook: If you cook, you’re likely going to increase your tryptophan, reduce your refined sugar intake, and increase your omega-3 fats (anti-inflammatory) and fiber. Overall, this will result in improved gut health, which has tremendous impact on your mood and mental health. How do you boost systemic tryptophan? One of the keys is to eat real food, and to make sure you include high-tryptophan foods, the highest of which is egg whites. You also need omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, which is a component of every cell in your body. More than 90 percent of the omega-3 fat found in brain tissue is DHA.So, how do you boost systemic tryptophan? One of the keys is to eat real food, and to make sure you include high-tryptophan foods, the highest of which is egg whites. You also need omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, which is a component of every cell in your body. More than 90 percent of the omega-3 fat found in brain tissue is DHA. Omega-3s are probably the single most beneficial thing you can put in your body. They are anti-inflammatory. They are anti-Alzheimer’s. They increase membrane fluidity. Therefore, they increase neuronal distensibility, which means it’s less likely that any given neuron will die.The problem, of course, is that when we took the fat out of the food, we took ALL the fat out of the food. It’s been a real chore to get the medical cognoscenti to turn around on this. I do want to do a shout out to the American Heart Association, because they have now debunked their long-standing cholesterol-fat hypothesis. They now recognize that saturated fat was not the demon they made it out to be, and that there are seven classes of fats, and that you actually have to consume omega-3s. You have to consume monounsaturated fats. In fact, you do have to consume some saturated fat because it’s a major component of membranes.Processed fructose, mostly in the form of corn syrup, has become a major contributor to the $3 trillion health care budget in the United States, and there’s clear data linking sugar consumption to de novo lipogenesis — a disease process associated with fat accumulation in the liver, causing insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, metabolic syndrome and associated diseases. That includes Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, lipid problems, cardiovascular disease, cancer and dementia. In the past, people had a much better understanding of happiness and pleasure. Lustig’s book describes how these terms have been purposely conflated and confused by businesses and governments because it helped sales. To turn the trends of addiction around, you have to understand the difference between the two.So, what’s the difference between pleasure and happiness? There are seven differences: Pleasure is visceral; happiness is ethereal. Pleasure is short-term; happiness is long-term. Pleasure is usually achieved alone; happiness is usually achieved in social groupings. Pleasure is taking; happiness is giving. Pleasure can be achieved with substances; happiness cannot be achieved with substances. The extremes of pleasure all lead to addiction, whereas there is no such thing as being addicted to happiness. Finally, pleasure is dopamine and happiness is serotonin.Understanding the difference between the two is something, for some reason, that the American public just never got. We have to make them get it in order to turn this problem around. Academics don’t get it. Businesses don’t get it.The federal government certainly doesn’t get it. We have to make them get it. That’s why this book is so crucial. This book will help you understand the distinction between dopamine, serotonin and the variables that help optimize these neurotransmitters. Most importantly, the way he explains it all has the power motivate healthy behavior. The bottom line is it’s about the science. There will be detractors who will say this is garbage. But the bottom line is there are 600 references to the primary literature to demonstrate that this is not gobbledygook. The science actually predicts the phenomena that we see and the society we’ve become.

The information in this book made a ton of sense, and it instantly opened my eyes to many of my behaviors and many less than ideal qualities of my environment. Not only that, these revelations were instantly actionable. I feel liberated. This is a powerful book: it will point you toward an achievable path to wellness and it will show you what has steered you wrong, why you got steered wrong in the first place, and what you can do about it. I gasped several times as Dr. Lustig unveiled mysteries that have flummoxed me for years. I'll be buying this book to give to my loved ones at Christmas. This book is one of the important one, folks: get it.

Dr. Lustig distills his core message in the epilogue: "The keys to benefit from pleasure and happiness are to understand the differences between the two, because even though pleasure and happiness are not mutually exclusive, they can still be opposites."I would add that the key to benefit from this book is not to think that you already understand that sentence. Yes, it does sound like a vaguely new-ageish truism, but it most certainly is not.Lustig redefines pleasure and happiness from neurological and endocrinological perspectives. I was familiar with most of the concepts that he uses, but the combination was still a revelation and it had an instant effect. I haven't read many books that have changed my behaviour within 24 hours. This is a very important book, so it doesn't matter at all that it isn't perfect. I didn't find Lustig's own recommendations for behaviour change very convincing or useful. For me his scientific philosophy was more actionable than his practical advice. I also felt that his political views had a strong content but a relatively weak presentation. The headline point of "the corporate takeover" would have benefited from deeper analysis, but Lustig is a doctor, not a political scientist.Nevertheless, The Hacking of the American Mind has the potential to clarify and rearrange some core elements of our cultural self-image. The book already un-hacked my mind quite effectively. If there is a way to give higher praise, I don't know it.

I didn't want it to end. At the end you feel like you really know them. Loved it. This is a novel worth reading every word. Although a majority of the readers could never humanly understand the pain suffered in the story due to lack of real-life experience, the words do speak true to everyday human feelings of belonging, pain, triumph, suffering, and so on, but most importantly, LOVE. We've all experienced love in all its ways which is why everyone can and will relate. You will, laugh, cry, judge...you will feel anger, hatred and fear but most importantly, you will feel how a breaking heart can HEAL.I highlighted so many good quotes. This little novel deserves all the hype and awards it's gotten. The author has written an astonishingly beautiful and compelling narrative. My only complaint came that I felt it was a little too short, especially at the end. I'm also certain this book will be made into a great movie. Absolute must read!

I bought this book on a whim but once started i knew I would finish it. Good character development with enough personal flaws to make it realistic.

It’s difficult to review Edna Ferber’s Giant because the book and the movie are so intertwined in my mind. Having seen Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, and James Dean in the key roles numerous times, those faces were the only ones I could attach to the characters as I read the book. I also had a difficult time, being a lifelong Texan, with the geographic setting. In the film, the ranch is obviously far West Texas; the book doesn’t specify but leads one to believe that the ranch is somewhere near the Gulf of Mexico, placing it near Houston—yet Houston seems to be hours away. Ferber’s town names often are invented, particularly the town of Holgado, which seems to be a large metropolis of mid-twentieth century Texas. This sort of thing is typical of authors, but the film is so firmly rooted in Texas geography that I felt a bit uncomfortable, trying to fit the place names into the Texas I know. That being said, the novel and Ferber were far ahead of their time regarding race relations and women’s place in society. Ferber had proven in her novel Show Boat back in the 1920s that she was a progressive woman as far as race relations go. She carries this theme much farther in Giant. Again, I had though the race theme and even the women’s theme was an invention or embellishment of the film makers. But they are straight out of Ferber’s book. She is adamant that her female protagonist Leslie Benedict have a say in how she chooses to live her life, and Ferber also is quite clear that Texans of the time in which the book is set—the 1920s, 30s, 40s, and early 50s—have a wrong-sighted attitude about their citizens of Mexican descent. It has been said that Texan readers at the time were incensed by Ferber’s depiction of them, for she paints my fellow Texans as vain, arrogant, sometimes ignorant, and above all, racist. But, knowing now what we know, her portrayal is fairly accurate, albeit a bit satirical. And finally, the prize-winning author’s writing style: previously, I had only read Show Boat, her novel written in the 1920s. With Giant, fifty years later, Ferber’s writing style is quite unconventional. She uses run-on sentences liberally and is continually stringing together lists of words with no commas. This, at first, unsettled me, and I wondered why she was allowed by her editor to get away with this. But soon I realized, at least in my eyes, she was trying to convey the idea that Texans of that era did not live by rules. That their lives were totally unconstrained and their attitudes matched those rules of life. Giant is a remarkable book and quite a good tale.

One of the smartest fiction books I've ever read; brilliant plotting and intricate details that come together at the end.

There are books and there are classics. Edna Ferber was a classic author with this one and although she participated in seeing it to the film starring Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean, her better work was in the book itself... but then, there my imagination got to play with and truly see, feel what this story was all about. The Rancher from a long line of Ranchers, The Debutante from Back East City Life, and The Dreamer of Big Things, Lacking Means to Reach Them. A story of love. Love for the Land. Love for Another. Love of Wealth. A story of Sacrifice. Sacrifice personal for professional success. Sacrifice of comforts well known, for devotion and love. Sacrifice of pride to overcome poverty, adversity. A story of loyalty. Loyalty to the past, present, and future. A story of Journeys and Generations. It was a grand film, but as in most cases of books to films, the book is simply better. Ferber gets a ball rolling, the story itself sweeps one up and carries one away... And while I don't think one can read it in 3 1/2 hours (the length of the feature film, give or take), it is an adventure in an industrious time where no one would, could stop an American Dream, as it would seem today, some (particularly politicians and evil terrorists) are want to do.

Characters are well developed, easy to remember relationships. I hate to have to turn back for the family tree. Unpredictable exits of characters to the story line as the plot takes a different direction. I enjoy the author’s writing very much and have read many of his novels. If you like Ken Follett’s formal this won’t disappoint

This is my first Ken Follett book and it will not be my last. His character development winding them through the plot was one of the best i have read. I usually read a night just before bed but found very hard to put the book down," Just one more chapter" .

#358,859 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is what I was looking for! There are so many books filled with great recipes...but I don't cook. I just needed something to give me some basic info and a list of foods so that I can put together my own, simple recipes. I can use this to make my shopping list and as a kitchen and grocery store reference.

I absolutely hate writing negative reviews, but I feel I must warn other people away from this book. It feels like the author, Martin Storr, just threw this thing together so he could profit from the suffering of people afflicted by IBS.I began to realize that I'd wasted my money, as I was reading the foreword: It was very poorly worded, and seemed like it was constructed from bits and pieces... which, in fact it turned out to be. For example, the bizarre sentence, "In order to maintain a low-FODMAP diet, it is inevitable to know the FODMAP content of all foods," is repeated in a more understandable manner on page 7, "The FODMAP Basics:" "In order to consume low-FODMAP foods, it is imperative to know the FODMAP content of foods." At that point I was figuring that it was just a matter of messy editing, and was still willing to give the book a chance. Then I read the "meat & potatoes" of the book, so to speak: 21 pages of food lists, with lots of white space on each page. This is followed by an 18 page alphabetical listing of the exact same items, a list of suggested books (which are probably fine, but can just as easily be found by typing "FODMAP diet" into the Amazon search box), and a half page description on page 52 of FODMAP Apps (the last page, BTW). The food lists are just that: Simple lists of foods under a "low-FODMAP" or a "high-FODMAP" heading, no explanations or descriptions. Things such as xanthan gum, caffeinated beverages, and alcohol are all listed as "low-FODMAP" foods - while these are indeed low-FODMAP foods, they can all exacerbate the digestive woes experienced by someone with IBS... there is no mention of the fact that some foods, low- or high-FODMAP, can be GI irritants.I found this book to be unhelpful, and strongly suggest that anyone interested in a FODMAP food list to hop on line and do their own research - Monash University is the best known source of FODMAP research and information, and they offer this information for free. One can easily put together their own list of "safe" foods to carry with them - considering each individual has their own personal lists of foods that can be tolerated (or not) by their digestive system, this might be a better idea anyway. But I definitely do NOT recommend this book.Thank you to Amazon. They promptly (immediately!) refunded my money when I attempted to return the book.

My digestion is cranky, and I've found that following the fodmap guidelines helps. This little book is very handy in that regard. I can carry it with me -- very useful when eating out. And I can study the list in idle moments. Having a list in your memory is better than a book or an app!I like the organization. Foods are grouped by category, and there's a pure alphabetical listing as well, so you can quickly check if a particular edible is a yes or a no-no.While it's true that a list from the Internet can be as helpful as this, I prefer carrying a slim little book to carting around a sheaf of paper or looking things up on my phone. But that's just me.

I've seen numerical data about how many grams of fodmap is in foods and was hoping to find an extensive list here, but that is not what this is. It simply categorizes all foods as high or low fodmap.I ended up keeping it, and it is pretty handy to have at the grocery store. Foods are sorted by category (dairy, meat, veggies, etc.) and then there's a comprehensive, alphabetical list in the back which is what I've found to be the most valuable. Makes it quick and easy to look up a bunch of ingredients instead of having to Google each one!

There aren't a whole lot of resources for low-fodmap diet. I took the chance on this one because of the price and immediate availability. Not very well-written, has some typos, and isn't organized in a very helpful way. That said, the price is right, and helped me figure out what I was looking for in future resources.

This book has a lot of information jammed into it's small size....it's perfect to pop into a purse or briefcase. Food items are listed as high or low fodmap so you can decide if you're willing to take the chance of of IBS symptoms ruining your day. Even if you don't suffer from IBS, this little book could help you pair up foods better. It was recommended to me by a friend, (Thank you Angie!) and I have bought it for several relatives and even a total stranger that works at the local pharmacy. I have not found this book in stores so save yourself the effort and order it here.

I ended up purchasing four reference guides for SIBO and this really was the only one I needed. Very extensive guide/table of foods and fermentation levels. We keep this close buy for frequent referencing. Also keep very up to date.

Took this quick & easy reference with me on a two-week vacation to Europe (slips into purse/backpack). Easy to whip out before ordering. I felt better: more energy, no queasiness and there was no frantic anxiety of looking for bathrooms in a unfamiliar place.
