About the Author
Ruta Vaskys and Martin Freed have had a number of careers including faculty appointments at various colleges, entrepreneurs, trapping and collecting wild herbs in Vermont and Alaska and outdoors and conservation writers and photographers.Ms. Vaskys has a BS in Occupational Therapy and a masters in counseling. She has worked in both fields and has been a professional commercial artist. She studied at the Maryland Institute of Art, the Richmond Professional Institute and did her graduate study at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.Mr. Freed taught geology, chemistry, oceanography and mathematics at a number of colleges and universities. He graduated from Coastal Carolina with a BS and did his graduate work at the University of Alaska in physical oceanography.Before going to graduate school the couple built a cabin in the Green Mountains of Vermont and lived without electricity or running water for a number of years.After graduate school, Martin and Ruta made Alaska their home. In 1988 they bought another home on the Eastern Shore Virginia and currently have residences in Fairbanks, AK and in Quinby, VA. They split the year between the two.They started writing outdoor articles in the mid 1980s and have sold articles to many regional as well national publications. Some of these are: Fur, Fish and Game, Easy Street, the Eastern Shore News, Maryland Life, The Mid-Atlantic Fisherman, What¿s Up Annapolis, Shotgun Magazine, The Chesapeake Angler, The Salisbury (MD) Times, Alaska, Fish Alaska, Game and Fish and many others. Both are members of the Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA.) This book rocks! Ok, pun intended. But what an awesome book! I'd planned a first time trip to New Mexico to rockhound with a friend and purchased this book a few weeks beforehand which gave me a chance to study the sites that were in the southern half of the state, which is where we'd be exploring.This book really lays it out for you in a very easy to read format! Each site will have coordinates and for those gps challenged, also concise, yet simple to follow instructions to get you where you're going! The authors are going to tell you what each site is known for, what they personally have collected at each site, what tools were needed for collecting, whether the pickens where plentiful or slim, and what other people have reported collecting at each site. In other words, you'll know if it's worth your time and effort, or if you should pass it by. For those rockhounders like us, who drove 12+ hours just to get to NM, time is valuable and needs to be used in the most efficient way possible.You'll know what type of transportation will work at each site. ie: two wheel vs 4 wheel drive vs ATV vs hoofing it. You'll know which sites are hard to get to when the weather is bad, and what sites are known for snakes!A couple of times we deviated from the day's planned course and for the heck of it would turn down a random dirt road that wasn't listed in the book and would have fun and success finding specimens to bring home , but mostly we followed with the book and we were not in the least bit disappointed! You almost feel like your somehow cheating!
This book is packed with information! Very comprehensive rockhunting guide. My only complaint is there are few illustrations. Perhaps in an effort to condense the information they opted to exclude the photos, but for me, I am not necessarily famiiar with all the types of rocks/minerals listed in the areas and it helps me to see some examples of what I'll be looking for. So basically, if you already know what these types of rocks/minerals are and just need to know where to look for them (in New Mexico) then this is your book! FYI, I also have Rockhunting Arizona and Rockhunting California. Both of those books contained sufficient illustrations, but comparatively, Rockhunting New Mexico offers many, many more site listings and as I mentioned, this may be the reason they opted to exclude the photos. For the price, it's a good one for the collection of rockhunting guides.
It is nice to see an updated field guide to rock hounding locations here in New Mexico.There are some interesting and productive sites here.The text gives GPS coordinates for many sites which is useful.There are some maps in the book. Some cover one site and some cover multiple sites, if they are close by. It would be useful if a map was available for every site as some can be difficult to find and reading the "Finding the Site" text can be difficult, especially while in the field.There are a few very bland black and white photos. Come on this is 2009, not the 1940's, color photos and a lot more of them would be very useful to show site locations and some of the material found. How hard is it to pop out the digital camera and shoot a few photos at each location. They did say they visited these sites ??Much of the text they just used the "Copy & Paste" feature in their word processor over and over. This is especially true of "Precautions & Restrictions" and the "Special Attractions" fields. This is really sad and gets really old very fast. You will have page after page giving you the same verbatim text. Two adjoining pages will have much of the same material just copied. The book would probably only be half its current pages if they eliminated the redundant text. They could have had room for much more useful descriptions of each site and photos if they stopped doing that. They could have used a symbol or icon system to warn about "Precautions & Restrictions" such as snakes or high heat. They could have just listed "Special Attractions" once for at the beginning of each related group of sites.So, this is a start, but it needs a lot of work. A serious formatting change is needed, more maps, more photos and color and stop doing that "copy" and "paste" stuff !! Come on folks, please revise and put out a new edition.
Ordered 2 books from the Falcon GUIDES series on rockhounding. The New Mexico rockhounding book by authors Ruta Vaskys and Martin Freed offered GPS locations for finding the exact dig spot the authors were at. This was a huge plus factor over the Arizona rockhounding book which leaves you scratching your head wondering if your in the right spot. Awesome books …… great place to start if you want to plan a rockhounding trip.
Great book, the only problem is that in very many cases you can't get to BLM sites any more. The BLM has closed (Gated) many (most) of the trails you need to use to get to many oy the sites. And it's just not NM. In most of the western states, BLM has closed access roads. You can thank past POTUS 44 for this.
Great book for the adventurous rock hounds ! We love it!
I bought this publication as a gift for some friends who were going to New Mexico on a trip. We were all disappointed the pictures were not in color, but other than that they just LOVED the book. They found it very useful for finding areas to look for rocks and found great specimens. When they got back they called and thanked me over and over for the book.
I would definitely recommend this book to rockhounds. I found it helpful finding local locations in the state of New Mexico
