As a recent inductee to Mage: The Awakening, I was ready and eager to get my hands on anything that would help me understand the world around me. I was however very unsure where to begin so I asked around and my sources told me to invest in the Silver Ladder book for an idea on what my order was all about. This item not only has the back history of the Silver Ladder but also what they are hoping to currently accomplish and what their aims for the future are. There are also order specific legacies in the back and information about helpful spells for each of the clans who are part of the Silver Ladder and even notes about artifacts. Overall I would recommend this book for beginners especially but also for older members who want to enhance their character in the area of their order.

Finally, after waiting this long we have the fifth of the Order books detailing the 'leader' faction for Mage: the Awakening. And it's about time! As with the other Order books, this one serves to flesh out the Silver Ladder, who seek to ultimately guide humanity to the powers that are their birthright. As opposed to the other Orders, the Silver Ladder (at its best) believes magic is inherent to humanity. Wonderfully, it expands them beyond their stereotype of 'leaders' and emphasizes their heritage as priests, viziers and philosophers of the Awakened, giving players and STs alike lots of new possibilities for using this Order.The book opens with the history of the Silver Ladder, from their early days as the philosopher-priests of Atlantis and the Five Kings who (they claim) established the Paths, to their embrace of the British Empire during the age of colonialism. From there, it goes on to explore the role of the Silver Ladder in different corners of the world, from businessmen in Brazil to progressive Muslims in the Middle East to humanitarian aid in Africa. The second chapter explores the beliefs and practices of the Silver Ladder, including the Elemental Precepts, their political structure, magical law, roles and status within the Order, and Path roles. It also explores the Silver Ladders relations with other Mages and, more importantly, mortals! Better, it includes rules for Cryptolopolies (secret societies under the Order's influence), new Proximi rules, and even Sivler Dynasties (entire families of Proximi!).In chapter three, we are given information about the Silver Ladder's recruitment, initiation and even conversion of other Mages, including the tests and lessons that neophytes must learn. In addition to some more info on Proximi, we also get more detailed looks at Status within the Silver Ladder, members relationships to their community and fellow Mages, and more specifics on the other Orders. This chapter also looks at the other things that lurk in the World of Darkness... Vampires, Werewolves, Changelings, even Prometheans and Hunters, with details for incorporating them in chronicles as either enemies or allies. It also includes some very nice details on what Mages know (and THINK they know) about other supernaturals.The next chapter gets into factions like the Powerbrokers (self-descriptive), Theurges (religious Thearchs) and Ascended (who dedicate themselves to Ascension), as well as sample Cryptolopoly cults used by the Silver Ladder. Then there are Legacies... lots of them, ranging from the Bene Ashmedai (another Legacy of Mastigos demonologists, opposeed to the Clavicularus), Keepers of the Covenant (Thyrsus who uphold deals with spirits), Sisterhood of the Blessed (Acanthus women blessed with good luck), and even a new Left-Handed Legacy. This is all good stuff leading up to the magic of the Silver Ladder, which includes details on the Arcana, Rote Specialties, sacraments used by the Order, and a whole host of new Spells and Imbued Items (some of which are a bit over the top, but what the hey). Finally, we get an appendix full of NPCs, which can be used in just about any chrocicle featuring the Silver Ladder, or as concepts for creating your own characters.All in all, this book follows the tradition of the previous Order books. While it isn't nearly as groundbreaking as some of the others, its still a great book for fleshing out and expanding the Silver Ladder beyond the stereotypes. Furthermore, the details on Mage political and legal structure will be useful for any Mage games, not just those involving the Silver Ladder. The same can be said of the new (and expanded) rules for Proximi (and Proximi Dynasties) and the Lex Magica. Those alone will make it essential for any Mage games. But the rest of the material is just as good too, and will no doubt give you some ideas for your next Mage: the Awakening chronicle...

A beautifully packaged, well detailed book of two of my favorite director's films. I look forward to many hours of reading pleasure and recollection. Thank you, Coen brothers. Thank you Ian Nathan!

I love reading and will nearly always pick reading over watching. Therefore when I do watch something I’m very selective that said I’ve seen everything the Coen brothers have done.For me this book was an informative look into their lives and how they started down this road. I’m not saying there’s much here for diehard fans or people looking for a more in-depth look. But for a fan of their films who previously knew very little about them I found it interesting.I discovered how they started a lawn mowing business to earn the $400 required to buy Vivatar super-8. And their film making career was launched.There’s some lovely pictures and quotes and as a huge fan of their films I really enjoyed it. Talking of their films I’ve been trying to narrow the list and pick my favourite but I’ve decided it’s an impossible task.I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Aurum Press.

The Coen Brothers by Ian Nathan is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late January.Being a fan and fellow Minnesotan, I was excited for this book, its photography, and perhaps gentle analysis of the Coen Brothers' films, but I draw a thick, wary line at Nathan insinuating that St Louis Park (once referred to a St Louis when talking about their junior high school) is 'nearby' Brainerd when they're at least 120 miles apart, uneven syntax (particularly straight-up sentences inside of parentheses if something is vaguely apropos), and hit or miss photos (off-topic, on-topic, or not appearing at all). So, yeah, a kind gesture and respectful toward these filmmakers, but frustrating.

I enjoyed reading this book about one of my favorite director/writers. The book chronologically presents the Coen Brothers from their beginnings in Minnesota to their latest movie. I really enjoyed many of the behind the scenes stories. The text includes a lot of wonderful photographs. Anyone who loves movies will enjoy this book.

Before I even opened this book I was in love with the cover! It will be going on my shelf facing out so I can look at it. It comes in a slip cover box. Then....it gets better...the quotes! A page turner of quotes along with the photos are simply fabulous. A great resource of all their work.

When people ask me what my favorite movies are, I list off directors instead...and the Coen Brothers are at the top of my list. I have seen every one of their movies multiple times. They are brilliant writers and directors in my opinion and if they are involved in a film then they can have all my movie-watching money.The Coen Brothers: The iconic filmmakers and their work is a self-explanatory title that tells you exactly what you're going to get when you open the cover. It offers a biography of Joel and Ethan Coen, shares insight into family dynamics, covers pretty much all of their movies in chronological order, summarizes the storylines, talks about the inspirations - how the setting or events relate to real-life experiences, discusses the importance of particular scenes, incorporates reasoning behind actor choices, gives a look inside the business of filmmaking, and so forth. Overall, this book shed new light on the various films which I wholeheartedly appreciated. I suppose you can spend a few hours researching this information on your own but the author has already organized all of it in this one place with vibrant photographs on almost every page to serve as visual aids. The result is a very deserving centerpiece for any fan's coffee table or bookshelf.As I write this review, Christmastime is closing in and although the appropriate activities are listening to seasonal music, baking cookies, and wrapping gifts, all I can think about right now is watching some sort of overcomplication of humanity's flaws and all the blood-soaked Minnesota evil I can muster. "Comedy flows from the horror, the horror bleeds out of the comedy." ...and another Coen Brothers' marathon is my present to myself. I’ve been a fan of the Coen brothers since watching Blood Simple many years ago, indeed I loved the film so much that I pestered the guy in my local video store to give me the poster off his wall. I love reading these comedienne's books that give you a sneak peak into what happens behind the scenes. Kaling was a writer on SNL and The Office. I really liked all the industry stories, but that's not all Kaling has to offer.Kaling's wit is strong in this book. I love her snappy comments. Since I listened to the audiobook, Kaling really added her own personality to her written words.I probably knew the least about Kaling than other comediennes I've read recently. I enjoyed learning of how she got into the industry. It made me google a lot of her earlier things and now I want to catch up on The Mindy Project.I give this audiobook a 4/5. It is a great addition to the wonderful comedy books by awesome current comediennes out there.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? was such a joy to read. I devoured this book in two sittings. And it wasn’t just one long joke either. There was some real substance to her writing. A lot of legitimately laugh out loud funny moments, but other more deeper moments too. With the turn of each page, you see Mindy grow and mature. Her writing is raw and honest. You feel like you’re sitting down with Mindy over a cup of coffee and something sweet (although, of course, not a cupcake; she doesn’t eat those anymore). I think every woman at any age could find something to relate to within these pages. And I think that’s a real testament to not only the quality of the writing, but also as to the quality of the author herself. The book wasn’t perfect and there were a few moments that were a little slower than others, but she still deserved five stars. It was evident she poured out all of herself into this book. And that’s something you don’t always get. Mindy you have a life-long fan in me!

It’s simply a glance inside Mindy Kaling’s head… and it seemed a lot like mine in there.Some parts were random lists or stories about things, which had me laughing my guts out. Simply because they were random. And funny. And how I too suddenly blurt out the most obtuse and inappropriate things. Mindy Kaling is me and a brave woman suit! Heck no, Mindy Kaling is my spirit animal.I wouldn’t go so far to say this book in hilarious. I don’t think that was her goal in writing this book. Just like as a performer or comedian we’re not meant to be performing monkeys ‘on’ all the time just for your enjoyment. It was like sitting down on the lounge floor in you pj’s and having a gasbag with your girlfriends.I love how the structure was broken up into flashbacks, lists, stories and comments on pictures… it really was like how evenings go with my girlfriends, clutching a glass of bubbly reminiscing and making each other cackle until we snort.I did want it to be funnier though. Or more engaging. But I understand in doing so it would have either been too serious, or too silly. This that the right amount of everything to kick back and relax, and to just enjoy reading. I appreciate how Mindy simply blurts out what’s on her mind. It’s finding a voice for much of my internal dialogue; and whether she intended the book to be like this or not, after reading it, I felt that if we were to run into each other at a party would become fast friends. And that is a great tone to have of a memoir. Masterfully done.So many hot key topics discussed without being pretentious. I recommend this to anyone who loves memoirs, or just loves being a girl.

I bought this ebook on Kindle quite a while back when it was on sale. I have no idea why it took me so long to read it. It's freaking hilarious from start to finish. If I could rate it more than 5 stars, I would. Being a huge fan of The Office, I knew who Mindy Kaling was, but I'll admit I'd not watched her in much else. I don't really watch TV. Or, I should say, the only television I watch are shows I already know and love and then I'll stream a season at a time on Netflix or Prime. I am now a huge Kaling fan. This book reads like a really long email between me and one of my BFF's. LOL. I read 90% of it in one sitting and only stopped because I needed at least a solid two hours of sleep before going into work. Definitely intending on reading her follow-up book. I think I highlighted about a quarter of this book... a true record for me. My first highlight is from page 4, during the introduction."However, you should know I disagree with a lot of traditional advice. For instance, they say the best revenge is living well. I say it's acid in the face-who will love them now?"In fact, I even highlighted an entire chapter, the one entitled: Guys Need to Do Almost Nothing to Be Great. I laughed the whole way through the chapter. I'm quite sure my family thought my fragile mental state was hanging in the balance as I cackled like a fiend reading this on my Kindle.FIVE STARS!

If you want me to tell you all about Sleater-Kinney, Riot Grrrl, and Portlandia...I can't. I know nothing about any of these topics. I know that S-K were a band (and are, as they've reformed), and I have heard the term "Riot Grrrl" thrown around in books about music in the Nineties. And Portlandia is some show that I've heard of only in passing. So maybe I'm not the ideal audience for this book...but then again, maybe I am."Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl," by Carrie Brownstein, was the subject of a review on the Onion's AV Club that I came across recently. The review piqued my interest in a book written, admittedly, by a musician whose work was (and still is) unknown to me. In much the same way that I let curiosity steer me towards Questlove's memoir without really knowing much about the Roots, I found myself interested in reading this book even though I was in the dark about Sleater-Kinney or Brownstein's other endeavors.For a non-fan, this is actually a really interesting, enjoyable book. The subject is not so much Brownstein's life (though it is the main thrust of it) as it is creativity, and her search for artistic fulfillment and meaning. Having a voice, having something to say, is the noblest reason to pursue artistic success, and Brownstein shows that she found that voice and that message through her work inside and outside of music. She shines a light on the music scene in the Northwest circa 1992, when Nirvana was hitting big and any band with a Seattle zip code and a wardrobe of flannel could find success (even though S-K, according to her, always remained on the margins of commercial success, they did find a rabid fan base that exists to this day). She also addresses the sexism that rock music has ingrained within it (reading some of the reviews S-K got that she includes in the book is cringe-worthy, even from the journalists who meant well). This memoir might be written for the S-K fan, but even non-fans like me can find their way through without too much of a map to navigate the various ups and downs of the band's history.I may not be the go-to guy on Sleater-Kinney or Carrie Brownstein's other projects, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy her memoir. And I will likely be checking out S-K in the near future.

Without seeing Carrie Brownstein on a television talk show, I can guarantee my Kindle library list would never included "Hunger Makes Me a Modern Woman:A Memoir." However, seeing her guest appearance on theLate Night Show with Stephen Colbert revealed Brownstein as an intelligent, funny, articulate woman that I wanted to know more about. I am not a musician; I detest punk rock; know very little about the girl bands and the indie musical movement in the Northwest begun in the 1990s. Sure, I was familiar with the names Nirvana and Kurt Cobain, but that was the extent of my knowledge about the world of Carrie Brownstein, guitarist for the all-girl band Sleater-Kinney. I had never even heard of a band by that name, or the many other bands she mentions throughout her book. However, as I read this memoir, I became impressed and fascinated by her vocabulary and use of language. As a reader I connected more with her sharing herself as an avid reader, her disfunctional home life, and her deep introspection as she searched to understand herself: where she had been and where she was going. The string of evidently "well-known" bands and individual artists within this genre meant nothing to me. Yet, I found her word smithing compelling and most intriguing. For that reason, this book is worth reading. I never glimpsed the total woman I saw on the talk show, but saw glimmers of her here and there. The work certainly burst my stereotypical vision of punk rockers and busting stereotypes is always a good thing. I would love to see Brownstein pursue a literary career; if her use of language could keep me reading through all the material in this book that completely disinterested me, just imagine how enjoyable she could make a good fictional story!

I've been a fan of Sleater-Kinney since I first heard them in 1995, and wrote rave reviews of most of their albums through their career. My admiration for Carrie Brownstein has continued to grow as she explored side projects, blog writing, and of course blossomed into a sketch comedy genius with Fred Armisen in Portlandia.Those wanting a detailed account of how she got into music and who her influences are (Richard Baluyut of Versus and Christina Billotte of Slant 6) won't be disappointed. She explains why they picked the name Sleater-Kinney, which sounds like a law firm or a hospital. "But in the moniker could be whatever we wanted it to be. It could embody whatever and whoever we were."Yet in her memoir, she doesn't readily spill all the goods. Meaning, she still holds some cards close to her chest, reluctant to share all of her private matters. That's her right, but I feel putting "memoir" in the title is a bit of a misrepresentation, as it's pretty much exclusively about the band. Yes, she discusses her relationship with bandmate Corin Tucker in the early days and their breakup. She touches on her family history, her father's absence and belated coming out years later. Her being unceremoniously outed in a major music publication. I've always admired how Brownstein's demeanor navigated a wobbly balance between an awkward, gangly young woman and a strutting, badass gender neutral guitar hero. Yet she never actually discusses whether she's gay, bi or gender fluid, and does not talk about any relationships after Tucker. "Here's my memoir, but my life is none of your damn business." Okay, so Carrie is all business all the time it appears. She also talks about dealing with frequent panic attacks, but we never find out what the cause is, if she ever got a handle on it, or anything. So many questions unanswered.Apparently everything worked out, at least as far as Sleater Kinney had a trimphant reunion, album and tour, she wrote a book, and had several successful seasons with Portlandia. However not a word is mentioned about the show, nor of Fred. Not a single word. I don't know if Fred didn't want to be included, or she's saving it for her next book, but I feel slightly cheated. Nevertheless, Carrie is awesome, so I don't have the heart to dock more than one star.
