This book contains basic information that is easily found on Google and from commonly read sites for people interested in fitness and bodybuilding. It reads like a less complex version of Tim Ferriss 4 hour body, but with Edgely quoting himself through out.Good for someone who knows next to nothing and wants to know where to start. A waste of time for someone who has spent > 2 years being interested in personal fitness and nutrition.

Not what I expected.........................it turned out to be more. This book is a mix of a memoir, a fitness manual, and a de-bunker of conventional fitness advice. This is about how Ross went around the world and learned about how people from different cultures and occupations lived and trained. An example of this is how he trained with the Royal Marines; lets just say it put everything he did about to train to shame. Now this book does go into detail about how to train based on his travels and his mentors, but you'll be suprised when you see it. I personally havent read anything like this since American Shaolin and am truly enjoying every bit of it.Ross; thanks so much for writing this! Its an awesome book that needed to come out sooner rather than later.

This is beautiful book with thick, glossy pages and lots of photos, charts and graphs. The author relates a number of his fitness adventures and how he trained for them. Pros: interesting stories and tons of fitness research and principles. Cons: the editor either has horrible ADD or was overwhelmed by the volume of material and did not want an 800 page book. There are recipes in the middle of stories, stories with no pictures of main characters and workouts peppered throughout the book. This might be intentional given the short attention span of most adults but I disliked the format. Bottom line: if you are committed to a fit lifestyle, you'll love this book.

I’m biased because this book literally spoke to my soul almost instantly and I didn’t have much of a critical eye when it came to formatting, style, etc while reading. That being said, as a fitness professional of 7 years, I’ve never found a book that spoke to the absolute importance of being your own experimenter and living through doing, trial and error- a lost art of the 21st century.I recommend this book to people who are iconoclast and interested in living with everything they got! Thank you, Ross!

The way the book was written allows it to be an easy exciting read without the half asleep head bob of the typical reseach only book in this genre. Having worked in the fitness industy and studying biomechanics and mechmical engineering has given me an in depth knowledge of the science but no experience in real world application with athetes of the highest caliber and this is where i see this book being very valuable. If you love fitness and would like to expand your knowledge to a level that one can only do by dedicating their life to training, traveling, and networking with the best of the best i highly recommend this book because Ross does it for you!

This book has opened my eyes! I didn't know what to expect from it and that was the best choice, because I would have been mind blown anyways. Ross Edgley takes the fitness world to a whole new level with his expertise. I always tought fitness and sports nutrition as something very hard to understand and I also thought it was only a one way road, but I realized that there i so much I haven't even thought about... Until now! I absolutely recommend this book. IT IS WORTH YOUR MONEY AND TIME!

Informative and fun. I’m not sure if the author has a short attention span but the paragraphs rapidly jumped from topic to topic. Some people might find this annoying but I was fine with it. I would not describe this as a cover to cover read more a reference book full of articles and anecdotes. I took the information that was usefull to me and ignored the stuffed that was irrelevant to me. That said I found alot of interesting information in the book and I quite liked the authors attitude and writing style. But maybe not everyone cupcup of tea,

Fun read for any fitness enthusiast. Heard about the book from JRE. Mostly talks about the basics of the body’s ability to adapt to external stressors. It’s good for me to read a book like this occasionally to remind me there’s no substitute for hard work.

This book gives you a good view of what life is like in this small country. Greg went there from living a life in California with all the conveniences that Americans have at their fingertips, to a small two room house with no electricity or running water! He adapted to the African way of life and felt he was helping his students and the students helped him become a part of the village. Greg's dream of submerging himself in another culture has been fulfilled! Very good book, with a good message. We would all be better people if we accepted people as they are and not try to change them..

I very much enjoyed Greg Alder's "The Mountain School," and I was very surprised to realize that it had been self-published: the writing is fluid and correct, and the pacing is absolutely perfect. Three years pass by without ever feeling rushed or dragged out. Alder is clearly an extremely gifted writer, with a clear and vivid style perfect for non-fiction. He ably balances the two languages of the book, and has a knack for the artful metaphor: the blood on a struck man's head "glows," for instance. Alder's characters really come alive, and he is insightful in describing their motivations and placing them in larger contexts. He does a wonderful job creating a sense of place and culture, and effectively engages the reader in the story.Alder is largely thoughtful, frank, self-aware and (occasionally) self-critical regarding his motivations and feelings in the book, which I felt was personally impressive and added to my enjoyment of the story. Throughout his experience, Alder seeks an impossible authenticity, to actually become a member of the village where he works. He strives for complete and casual fluency in the language; he eats the same food and listens to the same music; he even alters his physical performance, trimming his hair and proudly noting the effect of a limited diet on his height and stature. He reiterates that this opportunity for complete immersion as his motivation for joining the Peace Corps, but makes no effort to understand a still deeper motivation. A rejection of America's materialism? A desire for an identity outside his family? Nervous energy after failing to build a career post-graduation? Sometimes this quest reads as a commendable anthropological ideal; at other times, he just sounds like a middle schooler striving for conformity. Most often, the Quixotic quest for transformation is just mildly humorous in its impossibility: A white boy from California can eat all the porridge he wants, but he cannot alter his inherent and inborn privilege. However, the joke stops in a disturbing and abhorrent moment, when Alder witnesses the kidnapping and rape of a young girl in his charge, and resists coming to her aid. Instead of acting immediately, he sits there and wonders whether helping her is just more White foreign intervention -- a moral quibble that I doubt would have occurred to the girl he would be saving. Alder's failure to act immediately in this instance is self-indulgent and morally indefensible. While I greatly enjoyed this book and would certainly recommend it to a friend, even one without a direct interest in Lesotho, a few items frustrated me:* I found Alder's occasional description of his sexual feelings (or lack of sexual feelings) towards the ladies of the village to be quite disconcerting. I guess on some level, I'm aware that men are constantly horny, but I really prefer those feelings to remain unstated. Honestly, as a young lady, I just found it creepy to imagine out there, some dude on the street could be staring at my boobs and analyzing whether, how and why he finds them to be arousing.* Alder also does not engage in any discussion of Lesotho's overarching health and economic problems: though >20% of the population has AIDS (one of the highest rates in the world), exacerbated by a polyamorous culture, Alder only references AIDS to say that no one in the village is tested. I would have enjoyed his perspective on this issue, considering his expertise. Also, while he references work in the mines as causing death in people's middle age, he does not further explore the societal ramifications of an average lifespan just over 40 years old. How do you have a village without elders? How has this changed over the past decades? He's so thoughtful and insightful on micro issues, I would have appreciated his perspective on these macro issues* Alder criticizes aid workers and even his fellow volunteers for staying in the city and not living with the people. However, surely Alder must acknowledge the good brought by these alleged dilettantes: medical aid, administrative support, efforts to stimulate the local economy. Certainly he offers no alternative course or solution -- just snide mentions of those who engage with foreign cultures by methods other than his own. One almost receives the impression that he would have the people of Lesotho live harrowing lives of poverty, shortened by avoidable illness, than intervene or alter their circumstances. His tolerance for the ways of Lesotho is such that this judgmental and intolerant stance towards his own, actual people stands out in unflattering contrast.* I wish Alder had written about how he felt teaching English to these children, considering his concerns about authenticity, foreign interventionism, and the glory of the village's isolation. Surely teaching English is just another echo of imperialism, by these rigid standards* Alder does not devote much ink to the position of women in Lesotho, except for a passing reference to the hilarity that a law increasing the legal rights associated with marriage would have any true cultural impact. Considering that some women are leaders and girls do attend school, it'd be interesting to understand their place in society further.I don't think I'd ever want to get a beer with Alder, but I greatly enjoyed his book and am glad that I read it. I'd love to read more of his non-fiction and hope this book receives the attention it clearly deserves.

Well written in a very personal voice. Thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the book. It was engrossing from the start. I can only imagine what it would have been like to live through these experiences. It took 6 years to finish it, but was well worth the wait. It is also fun to go back and read some of the blog posts from the same time that these stories took place. Hopefully photo galleries for the book will be up on the author website soon. Putting faces to names always makes the story more rich.

This book captures the emotions and situations of living and working abroad very well. I would reccomend this to anyone thinking of doing Peace Corps or similar service as well as anyone who has returned. I would love to see a follow up book of Gregs realizations upon coming home to America. I followed the link to his blog to see photos of the people in the village and it really deepened the story for me. This book highlights more than just cultural assimilation and learning new language skills, it really examines how yor identity and morals can change while fully immersing yourself in a foreign culture. I am impressed by the attention to detail in describing his own personal thoughts without making me feel like it was a therapy session. It is very realistic, witty, and encouraging dialouge. I am so glad he chose to share his story.

I wanted to know how it would feel to live and work in Lesotho. Someone close to me was with the Peace Corp in Lesotho around the same time as the author. Through Greg Adler I learned what it was like to live without electricity and running water in a country where the language and customs were very different from middle class life in the USA. I enjoyed the book because Greg wanted to learn the Lesotho ways and life and not try to change the people or the way they lived. He did a good job of letting me know his thoughts about teaching, the problems with student books, the talents of the students, his frustrations in some situations, his joys in others, and his sincere love of the country and its people.

Amazingly Engaging! Once I started reading the book, I couldn't put it down. I wanted to know all about life in Lesotho through Greg's eyes. Greg is an excellent story teller. I could feel his frustrations, worries, fears and joy. I could 'see' his surroundings and be a part of his conversations. The book is well written and I can only hope there will be a next. I would really like to see pictures!!! Maybe your next book could include some of your (I'm sure) fabulous pictures. GREAT READ!!! The Mountain School

On the bus on my way to work this morning, I read Chapter 1. Greg's words put me at the school, allowed me to see the students' fraying uniforms, hear the patter of the pigeons, and feel the excitement and the isolation. It's beautiful, Greg. I can't wait to read more.

While not the best book ever written, Mr. Alder manages to paint a vivid picture of his time serving with the Peace Corps teaching English in a high school in a small village in Lesotho. Overall I would recommend this book if you're interested in learning about what life is like for someone who is involved with the Peace Corps. I feel like this book would have resonated better had it incorporated more humor.

I absolutely love this book! I first saw it at a FedEx Office location for 12 dollars and checked to see if I could get it cheaper on Amazon and of course it was on here. This book really outlines why it is important to start saving and ideas about how to start investing. This book is great for any age and the graphics are fantastic. It keeps my attention and really has a lot of funny and super helpful tips. I HIGHLY Recommend this book and will be looking at buying other books by this author.

I told my kids that if they read the book cover to cover that I'd give them each $100 to start investing. One kid took a couple weeks to get through it, the other finished it in one day. I started investment accounts for them on robinhood.com and let them pick out their own stocks. They love to watch their money grow (and sometimes shrink) each day. What a great book! I deducted a star because the book physically fell apart--not good quality.

I got this to teach my kids about budgeting and saving on their level as part of our homeschool curriculum. The primary learners I was targeting were my 7, 9, and 13 year olds. The book does a great job of explaining concepts, laying out a plan, and giving advice about topics including earning money, getting a job, and budgeting. A lot of the material is beyond the needs of my younger two, but everyone has been interested in the book, and we can always reread it in a few years. My favorite thing about it is the graphic presentation of the material. I also like the emphasis on saving. My husband and I used Dave Ramsey to get out of debt several years ago, and since then I have wanted to do some economic education with the kids. This isn't affiliated with Dave Ramsey at all, but it has similar principals, and it fit the bill for me.One caveat: It may give your kids ideas. For example, early on in the book a sidebar told a story of a boy who saved up to buy a dirt bike, which is EXACTLY what my 13 year old wants to do. Unfortunately, we live in the city and our yard is typically full of his siblings and there is just nowhere to ride. Also, I am a neuro nurse who has cared for patients who have met terrible ends on the seat of a dirt bike (and the trajectory off of one), so that is never going to happen while he lives at home. So, it may put you in the position of having to say no to something that is in a book that YOU gave your kid. See the problem? But otherwise, great book.

My 11 yo daughter as really taken an interest in this book. She reads it daily and surprisingly has been taking notes and telling us about how she is going to start dressing for success. I love it! Easy read and it holds her attention. I may have to read it next.

We've just started but so far my son likes this. He really loved the section on the 5 things you can do to raise your first 100. He loved the 6th thing (steal it) and the mention that you can't do that, and that's why there are 5. Love it! It will be interesting to see if he makes it. He actually already has his $100 saved up!

got it as a gift it is a kids book but has lot of good info that even adults could learn from this book

Great book! It motivated my son to start a business with his friend.

This book is so cute! My son is 10 and going on a trip with his 5th grade class so everyone has been giving him money for birthday and Christmas for spending money. We are giving him this book with a crisp $100 bill in it.

Colin VinhMrs. ReddyEnglish 12 CP Period 422 March 2019Rediscovering the Lost Mountain The nonfiction novel Lost Mountain was written by Erik Reece and published by Riverhead Books. Reece writes about his experience with radical strip mining, mountaintop removal and its negative environmental effects. He details his year long account from September 2003 to September 2004, and how the Lost Mountain in Kentucky was destroyed for coal mining purposes. The summit which he had previously climbed once a month, exploring its routes and streams, was gone. Throughout his journey, he explains how incessant human greed caused the Lost Mountain to now exist as a ghost of its former self on topographic maps of Perry County, Kentucky. Reece delivers his accounts of the animals, trees, and people in the utter annihilation of the richest ecosystem in North America. One of the most telling signs of the Lost Mountain’s ecosystem being destroyed is in the accounts of Reece’s spring excursions in the Appalachia. During the cerulean warbler’s breeding season, Reece hiked with Patricia Hartman, a young ornithologist who studies the warbler, into Buffalo Branch, a 3600 acre woodlot. He explains that the warbler’s summer breeding ground is being devastated by coal miners, who use the birds to detect odorless methane gas from coal in the underground shafts. Sadly, the number of warblers are dwindling due to the invasion of the coal industry. Like many of Reece’s later accounts in the novel, they all accurately depict the belligerent domination of greed motivated coal mining. Another pivotal point in the Lost Mountain’s destruction is December 2003, where Reece highlights the decline of the wood rat, another species inhabiting the Appalachian mountain area. Earlier in the fall season, he had been looking around the area for signs of the wood rats, encountering a dangerous copperhead in the dense vegetation. This chapter is the turning point for the ecosystem on and around the Lost Mountain. After three months, Reece climbs the same ridgeline and gets a view full of mining equipment. The loud sounds and debris from machinery including bulldozers and trucks fills the air, providing a stark contrast of the beautiful nature and animals that previously populated the area. Bulldozers have already carved out a path leading to the three coal seams that lie beneath the Lost Mountain, and the destruction of the environment has already begun. The main themes in the Lost Mountain are the negative impacts of human greed and the destruction it causes on the environment and people. In later chapters, Reece investigates the effects that the mountaintop removal has had on the people in human populated areas of Kentucky. The residue and waste produced from the mining efforts have been reported to seep into water supplies and raise water toxicity levels for neighboring towns. Air pollution is another huge factor that has trapped people inside their homes. In the Corinth Baptist Church, Reverend Peake describes the sunken condition of the church and apparent water damage due to mining. Surrounding residents have developed serious cases of bronchitis and asthma, with older residents suffering the most. Coal mining industries such as TECO use explosives in order to easily access coal veins, which caused much debris and flooding to ruin the house and garden which Debra and Granville Burke lived in. The accumulation of dust and destruction of the Burkes’ garden caused Granville to take her life out of frustration and overwhelming burdens. These examples are a small look into the huge scale of mining and its impacts on the environment, but important enough that change must happen soon. Reece had originally come to the three hundred million year old mountain to be inspired by the diverse wildlife and beautiful nature. However, in the course of one year, he was faced with the destruction of the biological community surrounding the Lost Mountain. Many are in opposition of the blatant unregulated use of Earth’s natural resources, but Reece emphasizes that such a mindset would only guarantee a terrible future for humans and animals alike. I also agree with this perspective, and uphold the fact that as we continue to live our lives without care for nature, the world will soon run out of resources to sustain anyone. The greed of major mining corporations and industries has run rampant throughout history and remains unchecked to this day due to the allure of huge financial profits to be made from extracting the Earth’s natural resources. Reece concludes that the nation should value community and the wellness of nature over technology and wealth. From the beginning of his time with the Lost Mountain to the end, Reece wishes that our progressive society would take a step back and change our attitude towards the value of nature and its important role in our lives. I would highly recommend this book to anyone willing to learn more about how the destruction of the environment plays such a huge role in how we conduct our lives. From my perspective, we have lost touch with our empathy and since we live in areas where we do not experience firsthand the negative effects of strip mining. This book served as a wake up call to actively fight against the greed of mining industries and convert to more renewable forms of energy to use in our own daily lives.

Erik Reece's "Lost Mountain" is a metaphor as well as the actual name of a mountain. This is his story for a year in eastern Kentucky as the mountain "is removed."This is not just another tale of woe about Big Coal, about coal mining or about mining in general. Reece knows that mining is here to stay, whether it is coal, copper, iron, nickel or bauxite. The focus here is on a special type of mining: mountaintop removal and valley fills. This type of mining came into being in the early 1990's when massive, powerful equipment and the technology to support it made this type of mining possible. This type of mining has the capability to destroy the topography of planet Earth. Our descendants, hundreds and thousands of years from now will still be living with the effects of mountain top removal and valley fills. The fact that the central and southern Appalachian Mountains are for now, the mountain range most affected by this type of mining holds a special irony. The Appalachians are one of the oldest mountain ranges on earth. The mix of flora and fauna has evolved over a long period of time. A rich mix of species includes more species of salamander, more species of bats, birds, butterflies, fish than any other place in the United States.Mountain top removal and valley fills destroy the land. Trees and vegetation get stripped and removed. The rich, layered soil gets dumped, along with broken-up rock into ravines and valleys where it blocks springs, intermittent streams, vernal pools and bogs. Watersheds and drainage patterns are destroyed. The complex ecological structure that took so long to evolve and which provides different ecological niches that support many different species can be destroyed after a day of mountain top removal. It will take centuries and millenia for land so damaged to emerge. Until then, only the very roughest species of flora and fauna can tolerate such poor conditions, a much-narrowed spectrum of life-forms.Read Erik Reece's book and get mad. And then do something about it. This type of mining needs to be stopped.

This book was articulate and well researched. It piqued my interest in issues relevant to the Appalachians where I have recently moved.

Reece puts you right there on a mountain before, during, and after it has been demolished for all time. He lets you in on conversations with people on both sides of the issue of mountaintop removal coal mining. Lost Mountain is well written, and I think it would be fascinating to anyone who loves planet Earth, our beloved mountains, and all the plants and wildlife who live there. Another reviewer of this book, a professional in the industry, makes some good points, but just doesn't get it when it comes to "property rights". Read this book and decide for yourself how you feel about permanently trading our ancient Appalachian mountains for corporate profits and a few temporary jobs.

Read this for a business class - pretty sad really - does a good job to describe the destruction and ecological damage being perpetrated to extract coal in Appalachia.

excellent education about what is REALLY being done to our mountains nd the people who live there ! A Must read for anyone on the planet who cares about our future !

I read this book for a college class, and loved it. Beware, though...you will probably be very angry at the whole situation by the time you are through reading. Reece does a great job of creating a riveting, edge of your seat story about a very touchy subject. The only question that remains is "What next?" What can we do to remedy this situation?

This makes one aware of the devastation now being wreaked on the Appalachians by "clean coal." Recommended for anyone doubting that we need to rethink our energy sources.
