I read this book when I was in high school having stumbled upon it in the library. I really loved it and it made a big impression on me. Recently I thought about it and managed to get hold of a copy. Having read it as an adult, I find it still stands up--it's clearly written, the author clearly has a feeling and affinity for his subject, and he expounds the subject with passion, sincerity, and no small amount of knowledge.This last point is where the book, I guess, falls short. OK, Arnold Posy was no Daniel Matt...but how many people really want to read Daniel Matt or even Martin Buber? What I mean is that this is a more accessible book, which is why it had such an impact on me when I was a teenager. It gets to the heart of the matter using simple language and doesn't assume previous knowledge of Jewish mysticism.I think this book would make a great bar-mitzvah or bat-mitzvah gift for any precious young teen who has a mystical inclination...don't laugh, I was perusing the I Ching and the writings of Lao Tzu at that age, but couldn't find anything accessible about my own tradition's mystical tradition.
Arnold Posy's Mystic Trends in Judaism tries to straddle a lot of lines, and winds up getting a muddled. Part legitimate history of Jewish mysticism, but more a true believers account of the subject matter, the fusion of these two elements is clumsy.The book's greatest success is Posy's treatment of the messianic element in Kabbalistic history. This part is not stressed in popular, liberal treatments of the subject, since it does not conform to many progressive ideas in Judaism.But messianic expectations were high in most Kabbalistic circles, and led, in some instances, to false messianic movements. Posy does a great job in mapping out these influences. He shows the inherent dangers involved in this kind of messianic expectation, and also its unassailable power.
