I read this book when I was in high school having stumbled upon it in the library. I really loved it and it made a big impression on me. Recently I thought about it and managed to get hold of a copy. Having read it as an adult, I find it still stands up--it's clearly written, the author clearly has a feeling and affinity for his subject, and he expounds the subject with passion, sincerity, and no small amount of knowledge.This last point is where the book, I guess, falls short. OK, Arnold Posy was no Daniel Matt...but how many people really want to read Daniel Matt or even Martin Buber? What I mean is that this is a more accessible book, which is why it had such an impact on me when I was a teenager. It gets to the heart of the matter using simple language and doesn't assume previous knowledge of Jewish mysticism.I think this book would make a great bar-mitzvah or bat-mitzvah gift for any precious young teen who has a mystical inclination...don't laugh, I was perusing the I Ching and the writings of Lao Tzu at that age, but couldn't find anything accessible about my own tradition's mystical tradition.

Arnold Posy's Mystic Trends in Judaism tries to straddle a lot of lines, and winds up getting a muddled. About the Author

Dr. Eugene F. Brigham is Graduate Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida, where he has taught since 1971. He has authored or co-authored 10 textbooks on managerial finance and managerial economics that are used at more than 1,000 universities in the United States and have been translated into 11 languages worldwide. In addition to his academic writing, Dr. Brigham continues to teach, consult and complete research. He has served as a consultant to many corporations and government agencies, including the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the U.S. Office of Telecommunications Policy and the RAND Corp., and he has testified as an expert witness in numerous electric, gas and telephone rate cases at both federal and state levels. Dr. Brigham spends his spare time on the golf course, enjoying time with his family and dogs, and tackling outdoor adventure activities, such as biking through Alaska.

RICHARD McGUIRE is a regular contributor to The New Yorker. His comics have appeared in The New York Times, McSweeney’s, Le Monde, and Libération. He has written and directed two omnibus feature films: Loulou et Autre Loups (Loulou and Other Wolves, 2003), and Peur(s) du Noir (Fear[s] of the Dark, 2007). He designed and manufactured his own line of toys, and is the founder and bass player of the band Liquid Liquid. Here was based on his six-page comic that appeared in RAW magazine in 1989 and was quickly acknowledged as a transformative work that expanded the possibilities of the comics medium.

I love “spot” illustrations, those tiny filler drawings that magazines used to even-up things when text columns ran a little short. The New Yorker still uses them, and Richard McGuire’s are among the best. This book is exactly what I’d hoped it would be: a collection of ~30 short spot series, either taxonomies (like the wire shapes of the cover, or insects strutting their beauty on a fashion runway), or narratives with tiny story arcs (my favorite is a group of condiments on a diner tabletop that calls to mind commuters in a subway car). To read it is to spend an hour in pure enchantment, and it will stay in my collection forever.

This diminutive book is packed with pleasure and astonishing storytelling. Whether you're a fan of inventive forms or a writer or designer (of anything!) McGuire's subtle wit and tight delivery for plot, character, mise-en-scene fascinate because of his ingenious use of the constraints of "spot illustration" including both the minimal column space and their purpose in a magazine crowded with long form content. The elements gracefully, sometimes giddily, play off the limits imposed. McGuire "writes to the brief" and the stories succeed with the most slender of means. I re read and study one set of drawings with my coffee many mornings. The graphic design and choreography of "Scenes from a Table" is my favorite. If you're someone whose own work involves concision and what goes on between the frames, it's likely send you back to your pages inspired and delighted.

As writer Luc Sante's introduction says, artist Richard McGuire gives personality to seemingly mundane everyday objects. The artist then puts these objects in a context -- a story, a comparison, etc. -- that is thought provoking, moving, amusing or several things at once.
