About the Author
Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez is the Creative Director and owner of Somos Arte, a Brooklyn-based creative services studio. With close to 20 years of experience, Edgardo has delivered exemplary services in graphic design for both digital and print for such clients as Atlantic Records, Columbia University, and Marvel. Under his leadership, Somos Arte, provides graphic novel production, web design/development, branding, key artwork and video production. In addition, Edgardo is a curator of art exhibitions having already produced three original Marvel comic book art exhibitions and his very own La Borinqueña for the Smithsonian Museum.Edgardo continues to be recognized widely for his work on NBC, CNN, The New York Times, Washington Post, NPR and numerous other media outlets as a graphic novelist having already produced his creator owned project, the critically acclaimed La Borinqueña. This is a beautifully crafted story comic. I will give a 10 to all the artists that drew, painted, designed actions – emotions on the stories. I particularly liked ‘Somewhere over San Juan, Puerto Rico’ P68, Gabo and Will Rosado did excellent transition between colors, which transported me as well as the Borikena to a time past with Taino chief Yuisa.Other great stories which I considered good writing as their stir emotions of those of us in the ‘diaspora’: Guillermina (p79), Maestro (p92), A Yellow Sky (p23 – this one reminds me of the Chinese restaurant in downtown Gurabo), and so many others.There are some stories that I noticed had a ‘political motivated slant’ to them; A Pitirre (p88), Buscando America (p50), Resistance (p152), The Puerto Rico of Tomorrow (p158), a guided ‘Pro-independence’ message?. Having these stories are important to share but guiding them in the comic as it is all representative of all Puerto Ricans is a fallacy. We all occasionally feel we are like the ‘Aquaman’ (p116) - half Human and half Altean; or half Puerto Rican and half American. There is bad stuff from the histories of either side, as well as good stuff. The comic however, strips the American side as it has been the only evil force of our demise in defining who we really are. We cannot be hypocrites in wanting to be recognized as American citizens during the bad times of a storm, but then wanting to be a Republic when things are good and convenient (p159, Carmen Yulin can’t have it both ways). For this reason I give it 4 stars, as the comic may not reach a great populance because of not coming from a more neutral position (there are ways to share the message without polarizing).The futuristic stories are interesting, “Bohio Girasol 2050†(p164) has great artistic work of how the future is hopeful and how it may look like if we all work together or at least try. I beleive this story will be representative of not just Puerto Rico, but many towns in mainland USA and other countries.I like the overall topic of finding heroes in all of us, by just doing our part. Kudos to the new superhero 'La Borinquena' and Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez for the idea. I hope to see La Borinquena embark in journeys around the world doing good and helping people learn more about us boricuas.To the artists – thank you for sharing your work.
It's a great book about a story that needs to be told about our Beautiful island, our people and the struggle that they're still facing 9 months after the hurricanes.Hopefully it'll reach as many as possible till we all understand that the people of Puerto Rico are still in need of help.PUERTO RICO NO SE LEVANTA, PUERTO RICO NUNCA A CAIDO!
Being Puerto Rican and having always wanted to be a part of the comic book world this book means a lot to me. I'm not the illustrator that I wanted to be when I was a kid, but I'm a writer and the stories in this book have hit the spot. The artwork from the varying artists is incredible and I really enjoyed the visual story telling difference used by each illustrator. Edgardo Miranda-Rodgriguez is a trailblazer and my heart is full with appreciation for his work to get this comic together in order to raise money for Puerto Ricans and to tell our tales of pain and resilience.!Saludos y mil gracias!
This charity book features excellent art and writing. Definitely check it out, it’s a collection of short stories.
When I purchase this comic book, I had an idea of what it was. I did not know the actual content. I bought it to contribute towards rebuilding Puerto Rico. This comic mix fiction with true stories. Living in the dark short story triggered my own experience from Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. I cried while reading the story because It relived my experience through the hurricane. No worries Maria made me stronger. Great content! Well written! The animations are awesome!
Bought the two comics...La Borinqueña and Ricanstruction....like both of them...will continue buying these comics if the artist continues releasing them

The book is excellent! It is like a superhero-powered history lesson and it provides insight into how proud Puerto Ricans are. It helps me understand my PR brothers and sisters a little bit better. And the different art styles make it a good read as well. Gracias!!
