From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—Ever wondered about the life of a penny? This made-from-copper narrator is happy to share. Told in a breezy tone, from the perspective of a penny, this engaging story is sprinkled with tidbits about the penny's history. For instance, the narrator's great-uncle, from 1943, was made out of steel, "like Superman!" The narrator tries its best to embody the advice of Abraham Lincoln, whose face and memorial appear on the front and back of the coin: "Whatever you are, be a good one." Pen-and-ink cartoon illustrations in combination with photographs of actual pennies capture the humorous tone. The book touches on the controversy of whether to discontinue the penny, though the narrator is understandably biased. Additional material at the end outlines a history of the U.S. monetary system and its ties to the start of the nation. VERDICT A light introduction to money, starring the often underappreciated penny. A worthy addition to lower elementary school collections.—Suzanne Myers Harold, formerly at Multnomah County Library System, Portland, OR

What a cute book!Cute way to understand how money moves around while learning some good facts.
Excellent and fast service.
Second graders loved this book!
The life of a penny is featured in this book. He's a proud penny. He has been everywhere: Philadelphia (where he was born in 1983), Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Puerto Rico, and Portland, Maine and Oregon. He has had many adventures. He didn't like the year he spent on the floor of a garage in Green Bay or in a sewer drain in a busy street. He has bounced around in washing machines many times, and sucked up in vacuum cleaners.Children will enjoy thinking about the life of a penny as they read this story. He likes Lincoln who is on his front and the Lincoln Memorial on his back. He quotes Lincoln: "whatever you are be a good one". That's a good motto for life for children to think about. Lincoln is his favorite president. At the end of the story, he just got grabbed. Maybe he will come to your house sometimes. This is an upbeat story children will enjoy. You can use it to then count some pennies, and teach the value of coins: pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters etc. You can do some addition and subtraction problems with them, using pennies as counters. This book makes pennies irresistible. The illustrator uses mainly line type drawings with the colorful penny taking center stage on each page. Afterwards you could do some art projects with pennies by gluing them on cardboard paper and drawing around them. A class could write a story about being a penny and the adventures that penny might have.Age wise this book might be most interesting to mature four-year-olds to children in 2nd grade. It's an original tale, heads and tails.
Told in the voice of the penny itself, this picture book follows the life of a penny in public circulation. With a humorous tone, the book explains that pennies are often ignored or lost and then whisked back into use again. The metals that modern pennies are made of are compared with older pennies who would have been this penny’s parents and grandparents. Throughout the book, the journey of being spent and then being spent again and again is told. It’s enough to make all of us value the humble penny much more.Siegel’s text is filled with humor and wonderful moments. Like the mourning of being sucked into vacuum cleaners multiple times or the pride of knowing that even though pennies are worth less than dollar bills, they are much stronger and last longer. There is a great flow to the book, moving from one place to the next in a series of hops and jumps that work to set a nice pace. The tone is one of information mixed with simple life lessons making this very readable.Bloch’s illustrations are almost comic format but without the framing. He has dynamic loose line that creates characters who pass through the penny’s life quickly. Real pennies and other currency are used in the illustrations.Funny and informative: that’s my 2 cents. Appropriate for ages 4-6.
This is the perfect book to keep the penny around since the US government is flirting with the unjust idea of getting rid of the penny.Quirky and cool, this little book is narrated by the Penny himself showing us why he is so important.Written by Randy Siegel, illustrated by Serge Bloch and published as a Neal Porter Book by Roaring Brook Press.#PB #biography #humor
This a really cute story. It is written from the perspective of a 30+ year old penny that has been many places in its lifetime. My children love searching for coins on the ground and were tickled by this penny's adventures.
This is such a cute book! Teachers and kids will love it! The illustrations use the penny as main body with cartoon drawings added. This is a good mix of fiction (with a talking penny), and nonfiction (with facts like how pennies are made, how they’re used, and their history). Penny’s hero is Abe Lincoln, of course, and he takes Abe’s advice to heart, “Whatever you are, be a good one.†Read this book to make sense of cents! All puns intended!
