Review
Dr. Brant Pitre"The result is an exegetical feast of insights into what is arguably one of the most central topic in the Bible--The Temple ... It gives me great pleasure to recommend The House of the Lord to all readers who want to understand the mystery of the Temple, and through it the mystery of salvation, in a fresh and exciting new light. [From the Foreword.]Dr. Nicholas Perrin"Biblical theology is experiencing a new wave that is finally putting the temple back where it belongs--at the front and center of our thinking. Now riding on the top of this wave comes Steven Smith and his newly released biblical theology that is at once scholarly and accessible. Protestant and Orthodox readers, no less than Catholics, will glean countless insights from its pages."Dr. Matthew Levering"For the new evangelization, I can't think of anything more important than the retrieval of Catholic biblical theology that Professor Smith accomplishes in this exciting and extraordinary book. A must-read for all seminarians and students of Scripture."

I have been interested in Temple Theology for several years now. It has really opened up the Scriptures to me. My experience has been similar to what Brant Pitre describes in his Foreward to this book. I too read Gregory Beale's fine book, The Temple and the Church's Mission. Unfortunately, Dr. Beale, as a non-Catholic, leaves much unexplored that has deep potential significance for Catholics. I have been contemplating what I learned from him since then, while continuing to further my understanding by a piecemeal pulling from other sources. The problem was that a comprehensive exploration of the topic did not exist for Catholics. That was until Steven Smith. I became aware of his interest in Temple Theology through a CD set of a class he taught, which is sold by Catholic Productions. This book is an expansion of that class. Finally, Catholics now have a text that is a one-stop resource available to them. I highly recommend this book as a serious study of the topic. Save your pennies and acquire it. You will not be sorry that you did. It will transform the way that you read and understand the Bible, and the manner in which you worship God in the Liturgy.
This is one of the most organized and complete explanations of Temple Theology in existence. Doctor Smith brings together a number of sources to show the unity and importance of Temple Theology to the story of salvation. Whether it is in R.C.I.A, in a college classroom, or from the pulpit, Doctor Smith's ideas need to be spread in our Church today and, in my opinion, are central to a real and complete understanding of scripture. If I could give this six stars, I would!
I've had the privilege of attending a Biblical Scripture class where Dr. Smith taught a few of us through the Institute of Catholic Culture. This was a shortened version of his seminary class which is the basis of this book. For many of us, our first challenge was seeing the "big picture" of Salvation History and Bible Studies such as Jeff Cavins' "Bible Timeline" have met this need. I've continued my studies and recently began taking graduate school classes in Scripture, Liturgy, and the Sacraments. Each of these are intimately related and in fact, they are really all the same thing! In "The House of the Lord," Dr. Smith illuminates a key prerequisite: Biblical Temple Theology, which students eventually learn but which is seldom "taught." I can already see this book is expanding on the foundation that he's already introduced in our classroom. I can see this book will serve as a foundation for the "Bible and the Liturgy" class that I'm currently taking. Before purchasing the book, I asked Dr. Smith if the book covers the temple as "the people of God." This response to me was "take and read." I feel like Augustine that I've been given a resource showing how to put together the puzzle pieces I'm learning. God is good and this book is a gift. Please "take and read" along with me. I'm sure you won't be disappointed!
Great book — it gave excellent context of temple theology starting from Genesis. It was very thorough and explanatory. The footnotes are one of the best parts of the book and certainly led me down a few rabbit-holes. The podcasts and Facebook group are also helpful additions. I highly recommend this book!
The House of the Lord is inspirational, informative, extremely useful, and a great read!If you like biblical buzz words (outer courts, Eden, the Garden, priest, temple, shekinah, Holy of Holies, Pharisees and Sadducees, Sanhedrin, mount or high place) they are all in here, and many, many more. The premise is that the New Testament is 'deeply indebted' to the Old Testament's theology of the temple, and the temple's outer courts 'correspond to the lands beyond the Garden [of Eden]'. The theology and spiritual depth of this evocative theory are laid out thoroughly, entertainingly and convincingly. Steven Smith's prose is clear and flowing, and for me, his careful exegesis of a great many OT and NT terms make his work exciting, rich and solid. (As a reviewer, I fall in the 'informed reader' category, not being a scholarly peer. I've had two undergraduate courses in biblical exegesis, and have read the Bible 'all the way through' three times.)
Pre-ordered in March. IT'S FINALLY HERE! If someone tells you they're looking for the original "Hebrew Roots" Christianity, tell them to look no further than the Catholic Church; with one important caveat: our roots are not post-Temple rabbinic Judaism - we are the restoration, flowering, and fulfillment of that "old-time" Israelite Temple religion! Much love and respect to Dr Smith!
loved this book! Thankful to have some sort of book that could help me understand this more! yay!
I'm only a few chapters into the book ... we are working/reading along with the author - theologian Dr. Steven Smith - via Facebook/TheOuterCourt. group. He posts an iTunes podcast on Solomon's Porch. Even if you don't have the book (yet!), definitely get your Bible (and a notebook) and check out the podcasts. Between the book (with footnotes that will lead you to more and more books) and the podcast, there is so much to ponder. Excellent book and interesting lectures. While you're here at Amazon ... take a look at Dr. Smith's book "Word of the Lord."
