Not in this book! I'm about halfway through and rather frustrated. I cannot believe all the nutrition "science" in the book was written by Mr. Hahn, so I must assume this was Ms. Cheung's contribution. There's an aggressive push for vegetarianism that I don't appreciate, and an emphasis on calories, calories, calories that I find disturbing. Besides, most of the "facts" on which Ms. Chung bases her assumptions have been debunked. Maybe "How to Eat" would be a better choice for Thich Nhat Hahn's teachings on mindful eating?
Once in awhile, you come across a book you want to buy for everyone you care about. For me, that is this book. This is unique, and has stopped me in my bad eating tracks, through the power of awareness of a different perspective and new knowledge. Years ago, I read Omnivore's Dilemma, and became a vegetarian upon finishing the book, and I have never had a craving for or interest in meat ever since. This book is similarly powerful. French fries and chips have simply lost their allure; I don't need that second cookie. It is not about self control. It is about awareness, of your self, of the food, of your surroundings. It is also about being caring towards yourself, your family, to the larger community, to the planet. Once you are inspired to be caring by the book, then it tells you how to. Sometimes new input really alters one's thought patterns. I sincerely recommend this. Unlike any diet book I have read previously. You will be glad you read it.
It is very concentrated on weight and calories. The nutrition part is outdated and sometimes lacking the scientific background. I didn't expect this from the book about mindful eating.
This book is a wonderful way of looking at health and specifically diet.Mindful eating is so incredibly important. It reminds me much of the Buddha diet. Just imagining that there is an enlightened being at your core and everything you eat is being presented to them... it just makes you think about what you put in your mouth.I'll be sharing this with many friends and loved ones.
This is a lovely, thought-provoking book; it's ostensibly about healthful eating, yet it also addresses our spiritual, mental and physical well-being.The authors discuss how food and health choices are affected by stress, fears, emotional issues, and how important it is, in a 24/7 world, toslow down and be mindful in all behaviors.
Bought this book after seeing it at a friends house. We are both fans of Thich Naht Hanh and both consider ourselves "foodies" however after reading nearly half the book Hanh still hasn't shown up. The principal author of this book, Dr. Lilian Cheung, bases her writing on the assumption that you are significantly overweight and live a sedentary lifestyle. If you are and do, then this may be the book for you, but if you are simply looking for a path to more mindfully enjoying the food you already eat then leave it on the shelf. All I've learned at this point is to eat more fruits and vegetables and get more exercise. Advice that I would bet, most of us already know. Will continue reading in the hopes that I get to something actually written by Thich Naht Hanh but it will be a struggle.
This book is wonderful. It explains mindfulness in relation to food. However it is really more about adopting a health way of life that can lead to better health, a more fulfilling and joyful lift. As a dietitian I wish I could have all my patients read this.
This is a must have for anyone that is wanting to lose weight and keep it off. Because we are always in a rush to do this, rush to complete this. This book helps you to learn how to enjoy your food. Just as the book is titled slow down and savor your eating and life.
